DETROIT (AP) -- Thousands of Chrysler LLC autoworkers walked off the job Wednesday after the automaker and the United Auto Workers union failed to reach a tentative contract agreement before a union-imposed deadline.
It is the first UAW strike against Chrysler since 1997, when one plant was shut down for a month, and the first strike against Chrysler during contract talks since 1985.
The UAW apparently is staying on the job at the five plants that Chrysler already had shut down this week because of sagging sales of some models, according to a person familiar with the walkout who asked not to be identified because the situation is in flux.
Brett Ward, a forklift driver at the Sterling Heights assembly plant in suburban Detroit, said he thinks a strike is justified, but he hopes the union can get a better deal than the one it reached with General Motors Corp.
"Hopefully with a strike we'll get some better gains and get a better contract in front of us," he said.

I was just reading in the Wall Street Journal that Honda forbids hiring of idled UAW workers.
I just got a call from my union rep. that the stike is over. They have a tentative agreement, and to report in to work my next shift (for me that’s 2:30 pm).

The UAW and Chrysler reached a tentative agreement on a new contract, and the union called off the strike that sent thousands of workers to the picket lines at 11 a.m. Eastern. Details of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Oh, wait, I already do find reasons to not hire former union employees (unless they’ve had at least 5 years or 2 jobs since their union affiliation - and then they get a year probation).

Thanks I’ve done fine since then. I really needed a job at that time and was very qualified. It showed me that unions are in these cases patrimonies and qualifications and skills do not matter. Being a vet sure counted for nothing.
One other thing, American made Toyotas are great cars.
Walk like a duck... I understand that being a Union member is part of the employment contract in cases, and it must be Hobson's Choice to feed your family or join the Union, but to say you are a Union member and a Republican... I am not sure you can do that without being a hypocrit..
I do believe they are “overglorified pimps”, as you say. But I do not believe in using the law to break them up. These people are within their rights to make these kind of deals with the union & their employers. If they monopolize the labor in a sector, the monopoly can only last so long in a free market. That’s the way it works.
Wow. I was going to post about my relatives not being able to get union jobs because they were black; this kind of crap is just as bad.
I left Philly just as the Convention Center was being finished. You may have heard about the problems Rendell had with the unions there; the whole thing almost hit the wall because the unions wanted to be paid for things like plugging in vendor displays.

As a business owner I will hire whomever I damn well please, or not hire.
As long as I do not award one equally qualified applicant a job over another based on Race, etc, I am golden with the law.

Sure you can! If you work in an environment where the collective has the right to bargain for any raises YOU may get in the future, you side with the collective. Doesn't mean you have to also vote for Democrates in order to not be called a hypocrite............
FWIW, I lost my job (FIRED) last Nov. after almost 35 years with the company and just a mere 2 weeks before I was scheduled to get laid off along with the rest of the plant. With the LayOff Benefit, I would have received 4 months full salary then 8 months at 60%. By firing me they only had to pay me the 4 months..........
Had I been in the union that would never have happened..........And since Michigan is an "At Will" state, any company has the right to fire you whenever they want...........
Don't tell me to contact a lawyer because I have been there and done that.
If given the choice, I would never join the union but after what happened to me, I can't say that I have any loyalty left to big business...............
Those of us a little younger have never had any loyalty to a boss/job (a reflection of how they have treated us). We're replaceable commodities. So are jobs. The only thing that lasts is your network of contacts and skill set. They will keep you working at progressively better jobs or contracts (assuming your good at what you do).

Nobody under 50 expects to work one place for 35 years. I shudder at the thought. I'm always looking for the next opportunity.
There is a lot of joint production but I stand by my statement in general. I supplied foreign parts said companies for a decade. So ease up on the propaganda - I made no political statements.
You misread the Japanese society where such confrontations go against their ways. The companies and unions prefer to seek cooperation that avoid confrontations.
