Analysis: Thompson sticks to script

The newcomer to the Republican presidential field didn't stand out in his first debate of the 2008 race but he didn't blow it either.

An intense spat between GOP rivals Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani over taxes and spending took some of the focus - and the heat - off Thompson and overshadowed the other six Republicans on stage; Thompson was literally stuck between the two as they sparred.

"I've enjoyed watching these fellas. I gotta admit it was getting a little boring without me, but I'm glad to be here now," Thompson said - and by the end of the two hours, it showed.

The debate was an important test of Thompson's maturity as a candidate and he largely held his own.

A late entry to the race who has stumbled, Thompson was looking to counter the perception that he's unprepared to be president.

Well, if you are basing your opinion of him regarding his capability to be CIC on one answer from one debate instead of the position papers he's written and foreign policy speeches he's given then that is kind of silly.

He has shown repeatedly he understands the Islamic jihadist threat and if anyone has proven he's "up to" anything - it's Mitt.

He was the only candidate to attend the conference in Israel specifically dealing with the Iranian threat and he has received rave reviews from foreign policy experts regarding his grasp of this issue.

Since his major address on the subject in Herziliya, Israel in January of this year, Romney has long stressed that an Iranian nuclear weapon is unacceptable. I am confident he will do what is in the best interests of the country in the most swift and effective fashion possible.

What I find kind of humorous (but mostly annoying) is that the majority of Romney's answers are always so excellent that as soon as he doesn't present an answer in the right order or it takes 2.5 seconds for him to begin an answer instead of 1.5 seconds the supporters of other candidates, some with mediocre answers (which nearly all could be over-analyzed and deconstructed), latch on to Romney's one less than perfect or precise statement like rabid dogs.

Surface-driven information...seems the MSM needs their ad money. I take these debates lightly. The ones that count involve the contenders and go into detail.

Yep.

I hope someday we can get back to real debates, in the Lincoln/Do9uglas mode.

From the WaPo article: "Thompson initially got only radiation therapy on the site of the original lump. When several other nodes became enlarged a few months later, however, he opted to have treatment with rituximab, an antibody that targets B-cells to be killed by the immune system." To what do you attribute your above dumb@$$ statement?

Rituximab is a monoclonal antibody and not NOT a cytotoxic drug.

Up yours you WaPo dope.

I'm a physical chemist

LOL! So you think that taking Aspirin for coronary disease is "chemotherapy". If you are indeed a "physical chemist", then you are a dumbass physical chemist.

I guess Matthews was trying for a repeat of the 'gotcha' against George W. Bush, who was asked about the President of Pakistan during his first run for President.

Too bad, 'Christoper', so sad.

The Pakistan question obviously did not have anything to do with Bush’s performance as President though. He’s played Musharraf like a fine violin.

If Fred’s doctor has given him the go-ahead to run for office, I don’t see any reason to worry. As for his general physical demeanor, about which I assume you mean the way he carries himself, stands, etc, I’d attribute any differences to the fact that he’s quite tall. It’s always seemed to me that tall folks tend to hold and carry themselves differently than average or short people. I wouldn’t attach any negative significance to Fred’s doing that.

Great line. Smart, because he could have it “in the can” to respond to just about any type of clever attack on him.

I'm sure Fred meant it as "Good 'reading', Pal!". Or perhaps "Gosh, you made that sound sincere!".

It is my basic hesitation about him.

I did notice that Fred came across almost as a tired, old man during the debate. I still liked a lot of what he had to say, but I can't help but be concerned about his health (regardless of the Presidential race).

I was hoping for him to be our salvation going into this, despite the gripes about him.

Good grief! Sounds like you were placing unobtainable expectations on the man! Give him a chance, won't you? This was his first 'debate' experience for a while. Cut him some slack and see how he does in future 'debates', or just watch some of the video of him 'on the stump' in front of crowds.

I don't understand why folks are even considering basing their support of someone on ONE debate performance.

Wait you mean like 9/11? Oh wait the President waited a week before coming to Congress. I thought you meant something like Pearl Harbor...oh wait even that worthless pile of crap FDR was able to go before Congress and request a declaration of war. However did he do it?!?

there is one glaring difference between 9/11 and Pearl Harbor. With the latter, it was an established COUNTRY that attacked us, and against whom we could declare war. With 9/11, it was much different because of the nationalities of the terrorists, and their affiliations. We had to determine the group against which war would be declared. I think it's wise for a President to give the response some intelligent thought rather than flying off the handle, don't you?

Thompson's doctor said he has a subtype known as "marginal zone lymphoma" and was treated with a drug called Rituxan, a monoclonal antibody which zeros in on cancer cells to specifically target them. But Cheson confirmed that Thompson is in remission with no signs of the cancer detectable by medical tests.

I believe what Free Reign means about chemotherapy is what MOST folks think of when they think of chemo; a series of treatments that can be extemely debilitating for people. Sounds like from this article, and the WaPo one, that the Rituxan with which Fred was treated wasn't the STANDARD chemo treatment, as most understand it, but could have been considered chemo, nonetheless, simply because it introduced an antibody into the system by artificial means.
