The newcomer to the Republican presidential field didn't stand out in his first debate of the 2008 race but he didn't blow it either.
An intense spat between GOP rivals Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani over taxes and spending took some of the focus - and the heat - off Thompson and overshadowed the other six Republicans on stage; Thompson was literally stuck between the two as they sparred.
"I've enjoyed watching these fellas. I gotta admit it was getting a little boring without me, but I'm glad to be here now," Thompson said - and by the end of the two hours, it showed.
The debate was an important test of Thompson's maturity as a candidate and he largely held his own.
A late entry to the race who has stumbled, Thompson was looking to counter the perception that he's unprepared to be president.

You might think dolt but we are entangled with gobalism so it is best to fine the route to take so the US does not end up on trial.
Of course defending the nation is Mitt top priority but not having red tape in the end would even be better!

MATTHEWS: Governor Romney…if you were president of the United States, would you need to go to Congress to get authorization to take military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities?
ROMNEY: You sit down with your attorneys and tell you what you have to do, but obviously the president of the United States has to do what’s in the best interest of the United States to protect us against a potential threat. The president did that as he was planning on moving into Iraq and received the authorization of Congress...
MATTHEWS: Did he need it?
ROMNEY: You know, we’re going to let the lawyers sort out what he needed to do and what he didn’t need to do. But, certainly, what you want to do is to have the agreement of all the people — leadership of our government as well as our friends around the world where those circumstances are available.
Yes, he did. Fred also hit him with the devastating put down about being the best actor on the stage.
That’s one slam that Slick Willard will be thinking about tonight, when his head hits the pillow.

Actually it was the Suit that said it. And after reading some of the answers I’ve seen by the candidates, the only candidate that had it right Constitutionally was Ron Paul. The rest apparently no longer have much use for the Legislative Branch.

But it is hardly the first thing I would expect out of a candidate's mouth when answering such a question — hopefully he or she will have already touched base with counsel on the subject

You have asked for our opinion as to the scope of the President’s authority to take military action in response to the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. We conclude that the President has broad constitutional power to use military force. Congress has acknowledged this inherent executive power in both the War Powers Resolution, Pub. L. No. 93-148, 87 Stat. 555 (1973), codified at 50 U.S.C. §§ 1541-1548 (the “WPR”), and in the Joint Resolution passed by Congress on September 14, 2001, Pub. L. No. 107-40, 115 Stat. 224 (2001). Further, the President has the constitutional power not only to retaliate against any person, organization, or State suspected of involvement in terrorist attacks on the United States, but also against foreign States suspected of harboring or supporting such organizations. Finally, the President may deploy military force preemptively against terrorist organizations or the States that harbor or support them, whether or not they can be linked to the specific terrorist incidents of September 11.

Matthews tried to embarrass Thompson by asking who the Prime Minister of Canada is. Since Thompson knew the answer, I wonder why the media is not talking about how Thompson made a fool of the diminutive Matthews, who apparently thought Thompson would not know the answer.
I guess it’s one of those things that only works against you, not in your favor.
Imagine that! That’s what presidents do!
Hillary must be really scared of Thompson if they are spending so much time and energy trying to destory him.

I feel just the other way, that Hillary would pay for Fred Thompson to win, if Fred looks insecure with his fellow Republicans on stage, imagine how he would look up against Hillary in debate.
If Fred Thompson walked on water, you would claim it was because he either (a) couldn’t swim or (b) was afraid to get wet....we all know you are a shill for mitt.
I was disappointed by this debate. None of them stuck it to the Democrats and no one stuck out.
Rudy acknowledged Hillary is tough to beat.
