I must begin by sharing an incredibly thoughtful deed done by a dear FReeper.
I just got home from visiting humble and had sat at my computer to finish the ping list for this thread (which was taking a lot of time last night) and then to post an update and respond to posts. The following is the body of the FReepmail I found in my mailbox from LucyJo:
Here is a list of all of the folks who have posted to humblegunners prayer thread through post 319. Hope it is helpful to you. I know what its like to have someone sick in the hospital, and trying to get everything done that needs doing!God bless his mom, and all loved ones and friends. Praying that he is well soon.
Following it was a huge ping list which she compiled today.
What an incredibly thoughtful and helpful thing to do. I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes.
I don't know what to say or how to thank you, LucyJo.
*huge hug!*
humble update, continued:
Here's TheMom's post #329:
Can you ping your list with this update?
I went to see humble today. He looks and sounds wonderful!!! This is the best I have seen him in a week ~ I am so thrilled. He should be out of the ICU tomorrow, and then it is back to a regular room. He said the ICU was really a torture chamber. The drainage of his lungs is slow, which means there is not much there to drain.
If the docs told him what they did in surgery he does not remember. I explained what all they did to him; his only comment was he hoped they sprayed his lungs with Lysol because that kills germs on contact.
humble update, continued again:
When I visited him he looked great, too. He was in fine form, trying to boss me around and then, when I would remind him that doesn't work, telling me how nice I am to come and visit him and then asking nicely for whatever he wanted me to do.
The first thing he asked for was his cap that he always has on in photos. He's got so many tubes coming out of him that he looks like some kind of crazy octopus with a red baseball cap back on top. Additionally, he is now sporting a full beard, of which he is very proud.
I took a copy of this thread to post #331, which he had read to post #144 a couple of days ago. As soon as he had put on his cap, he read it. About halfway through he stopped and said, "The whole country's praying for me."
Then he continued reading for a couple of minutes, stopped again and said, "They're praying for my family: they're praying for themselves because they are my family."
For any of you who doubted, that's a glimpse into the "heart of gold part." ;-)
When I asked him if they had determined the specific type of infection he had, he told me that his doctors had asked two specialists to look at his case. They did and they have no idea what critter is causing this. They've sent his information to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta for analysis.
humble just can't do things the simple way, can he?
prayers continue
Thanks for the update! He’ll be able to watch Soap Operas soon. Prayers for all are continuing here from behind the Redwood Curtain...
This part of the country is still sending prayers.
BTTT
Prayers continue!
Prayers that you'll be home real soon.
Pax & the Mom.. thanks for your updates & stories.. I am continuing my prayers for our buddy with the beard & red hat! (ha). I know how difficult it is to get rid of these tough viruses from the horror stories this past year. .
Harumph, Texans always gotta show off.
Get better soon humble. :)
Good Wishes!!
My brother had a “fever of unknown origin” (twice a day over 105, shaking chills for over 2 weeks) that ended when they did some biopsies and ended up removing his spleen. They never found the specific infection, but sent slides of his tissue all over the country for study.
He joked “I may not have gone to Harvard med school, but my spleen did!”
No telling where Humblegunner’s will go to medical school.
(The important thing is to get well, HG!)
Thanks for the update — I’ve been worrying about Humble for days.
What wonderful, wonderful news! Shows that not only prayer but a sense of humor and a lil orneriness go a long way toward healing. Prayers will continue, esp that CDC will find out the cause so they can stop it completely.
Tell him I said HI and that he’s in my prayers... Keep us posted on his progress PLEASE! :-)
When I asked him if they had determined the specific type of infection he had, he told me that his doctors had asked two specialists to look at his case. In all seriousness one of the best known UFO encounters happened just a mile or two down the road about 25 years ago, no joke there.http://www.ufoevidence.org/cases/case86.htm, so now we know the rest of the story.
Humble is one a kind, not surprising it would take one of a kind germs to lay him low.
Maybe he'll make the medical textbooks.
I'll bet that notion would hack him off...It'd be good for him.
