*ALL* nuclear weapons detonated in an atmosphere generate an EMP.

Re: The weapon you’re talking about that the media went bonkers about a while back: You can build a nuke to go off way up in the air (a type of “air burst” munition) that is designed to *maximize* the EMP it generates. This nuke wouldn’t cause much, if any, surface destruction or loss of life, but it would fry most civilian electronics and cause a lot of pain in that regard.

The MOAB hasn’t been sold or lent to any of our allies that we know of; additionally, it’s so bloody big that you can’t carry it on a fighter or bomber - you have to carry it on a slow, lumbering cargo transport aircraft. It’s unlikely that Israel would risk one of their transports in Syria.

One of my *new* theories is that NK told the US about the shipment

Could have been a faction inside the NK government...Kim from the looks of him in recent photos is not long for this earth....that faction could have told us about it...to save its neck if and when the regime FALLS.

Iraq fired 39 SCUD missiles at Israel in 1991. Had any of those been armed with other than HE, WWIII would have begun within an hour.....

I will never forget scanning every TV news station I could while those were in the air thinking where I would go to protect my family if the Scuds carried anything but high explosives.

"Unless stolen, it is still there."

Other reports / speculation have the Israeli commandoes inside the buildings stealing stuff before the bombing raid. Would fit perfectly.

Its a facinating article, but suggesting it was almost ‘World War Three’ is over the top, by miles and miles and miles in my opinion.

Who was going to fight this World War, outside of the regional interests?

Nobody.

Not particularly. It’s been discussed on FR before.

Another nuclear detonation whose cause and reason for use is unclear (but whose existence is verified):

*Nobody* is really sure what the heck happened out there, except those responsible - and they aren’t talking.

Anyone have coordinates on where this happened? A few minutes with Google Maps could be interesting.

You don’t need a nuke to generate an EMP. The guys at Los Alamos have been busy......

I disagree....if the Syrians had lobbed a nuke into Israel...and Israel struck back... that to me is WWIII....when the nukes launch....its game over.

Technology, no. Materials, yes.

I'm pretty sure NK and Pakistan traded missile tech for nuclear tech.

Remember Al-Quaeda Khan?

“They stole the bomb.”

That would explain no reaction from the Syrians. Iranians, Russians, or Other Muslims.

If the Israelis stole the BOMB, they have the EVIDENCE.

‘I disagree....if the Syrians had lobbed a nuke into Israel...and Israel struck back... that to me is WWIII....when the nukes launch....its game over.’

There are how many countries in the ‘world’?

You describe a battlefield exchange between two of them here. Even if its nukes, its not a ‘World War’ by definition.

Reason to be worried as hell? No denying it.

But World War? Nope, not even close.

Ah, yes, of course, that makes sense. I didn’t engage my mind before my fingers started typing. What type of weapon WOULD we use. There are so many to choose from now — Neutron (which I suspect would be totally useless in this instance). This shows such ignorance on my part that I’m embarrassed to post, but if that aerial shot is the one of the target, whatever dropped left a very large hole.

I’m still recovering from the air show a few years back when they brought in a huge triangle-shaped bomber. Heard nothing as it approached, then it went straight up and the rumble left my heart pounding in my chest and all I could think is, “Oh dear Lord, I would hate to see that coming at me with business on its pilot’s mind.” What awesome weapons we have developed — thrilling, fascinating and humbling to know that much power is in the hands of a country that has never sought to expand its borders or take what isn’t ours.

When you think what we COULD do and do not, it is more of a compliment to all of us than mere words can convey.

Yup, 250,000 artillery tubes/missile rails pointed at Seoul makes for a heck of a Mexican standoff.

I once had a liberal tell me that if NK was such a problem we should just go ahead and bomb them and tell SK “sorry about that, better luck next capital” - in other words, condemn over a million South Koreans to death and tank the Asian economy. I found that statement very illuminating - on just how insane liberals are.

Agreed. But there’s been no operational deployment of a *real* non-nuke EMP weapon that I know of - so I think that development is best left undiscussed.

From Stratfor:

Syria: Russia Upgrades Air-Defense System
October 02, 2007 14 48 GMT

Russia has sent a team of technicians to Syria to upgrade the Syrian air-defense network, London daily The Times reported Oct. 2. The team reportedly was dispatched after Syrian airspace was penetrated by an alleged Israeli airstrike Sept. 6 near Dayr az-Zawr. The Times report also suggests that the Israeli air force successfully applied, for the first time, a sophisticated electronic warfare system that jammed Syria’s Russian-made radar during the attack.

Gotta remember that Google Maps or Earth is NOT realtime or even recent.

Their satellite photo of my parents’ house, for example, shows a car they haven’t owned in 9 years.
