KSL News) A Tremonton man accused of causing a fatal car accident while texting has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors say Reggie Shaw was texting on September 22 when his car drifted over the center line on State Route 30 west of Logan and slammed into an oncoming car.

The driver of that car died instantly. The passenger was also killed.

Highway Patrol troopers say Shaw continued to send and receive text messages as he was questioned about the accident.

I can't believe this guy was still texting after causing a fatal crash while talking to police.

The judge should sentence him to 20 years and then say “CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?”

Talking on phones is hazardous....you can’t do both at the same time. Talk or drive.

My Mom was T-Boned by a cell phone yakker speeding down the main highway. Fortunately, she can still walk, but only with a cane and at a considerably slower pace.

The yakker basically walked because there is no law agaist it. There should be. Hands free options are available.

Texting when you can talk is for morons. Texting while driving is for a$$holes. I usually refuse to speak to anyone on a cell phone while they are driving. I tell them unless it’s an emergency, call when they get to where they are going.

I would love to see a philosophical/political breakdown on the driver-cellphone users.

I bet anything the majority are libs.

Since laws, rules, and logic are not part of their thought process, they feel they can TEXT AWAY!

Unfortunately, various studies done on this have found no measurable difference in distraction level between cell phone users with or without the hands-free unit. The distraction lies in carrying on a conversation with someone who is outside of your situation, thus reducing your situational awareness - not in actually holding the phone itself.

Most laws which ban the use of cell phones specifically exempt those with hands-free units, even though, from what I have read, it's just as dangerous.

Rob Briley drank a nightcap from the front seat of his car before he took the field sobriety test.

Last week I drove from Charlotte to Raleigh, and on Highway 85
I counted at least 8 cars that seemed out of control. In every single instance, the driver was oblivious to the traffic around him/her, and each time they were on their cell phone, driving with one hand.

I’d rather drive with a highway full of drunks at night, than with a highway full of cellphone users in broad daylight.

Handheld cellphone use should be OUTLAWED while driving.

Oh, the possibilities! Imagine one key on his device juiced with enough electricity to fry his innards ... only he doesn't know which one. Text roulette.

I cannot believe he is pleading not guilty, especially while still texting during questioning. I’m sure phone records show he was texting when the wreck happened.
Some folks have HUGE ball$.

‘Highway Patrol troopers say Shaw continued to send and receive text messages as he was questioned about the accident.’

Given cops tell you to put out a cigerette when they pull you over, I find this rather hard to believe.

Anyone ever met a cop that would allow a person they were questioning to do this?

I’d have to disagree with that. I refuse to use my cell phone while driving if I have to hold it to my ear. But with the bluetooth going, it’s really not an issue (although I rarely do this either). It’s no different than talking to someone in the passenger seat. The main thing is to just pay attention to what the heck is going on around you ... the conversation is not as important.
