Tonight at Daily Kos, the new mainstream voice of the Democratic Party, they’ve found a new angle from which to attack General Petraeus: Hey, MoveOn! Petraeus Wore Fraud Medal At Testimony.
Examining General Petraeus’s medals, his official bios and then comparing three reports of events on 3/30/2003 in Najaf, Iraq - two by prize-winning embedded journalists and one understood to be by Army personnel (which document this diarist will produce to a responsible party at any time) - this diarist cannot conclude other than that General David Petraeus wore a medal for combat valor in his testimony before Congress that was a sham, propaganda and a dishonor to his troops and nation.
I will be extremely surprised if there is anything to these charges, but it’s not my area of expertise, so LGF military lizards—please weigh in.

General David H. Petraeus assumed command of the Multi-National Force-Iraq on February 10th, 2007, following his assignment as the Commanding General, U.S. Army Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth. Prior to assuming command at Ft. Leavenworth, he was the first commander of the Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq, which he led from June 2004 to September 2005, and the NATO Training Mission- Iraq, which he commanded from October 2004 to September 2005. That deployment to Iraq followed his command of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), during which he led the “Screaming Eagles” in combat throughout the first year of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His command of the 101st followed a year deployed on Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia, where he was the Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations of the NATO Stabilization Force and the Deputy Commander of the US Joint Interagency Counter-Terrorism Task Force-Bosnia. Prior to his tour in Bosnia, he spent two years at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, serving first as the Assistant Division Commander for Operations of the 82nd Airborne Division and then as the Chief of Staff of XVIII Airborne Corps.
General Petraeus was commissioned in the Infantry upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1974. He has held leadership positions in airborne, mechanized, and air assault infantry units in Europe and the United States, including command of a battalion in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and a brigade in the 82nd Airborne Division. In addition, he has held a number of staff assignments: Aide to the Chief of Staff of the Army; battalion, brigade, and division operations officer; Military Assistant to the Supreme Allied Commander - Europe; Chief of Operations of the United Nations Force in Haiti; and Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
General Petraeus was the General George C. Marshall Award winner as the top graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College Class of 1983. He subsequently earned MPA and Ph.D. degrees in international relations from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, and later served as an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the US Military Academy. He also completed a fellowship at Georgetown University.
Awards and decorations earned by General Petraeus include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, two awards of the Distinguished Service Medal, two awards of the Defense Superior Service Medal, four awards of the Legion of Merit, the *******Bronze Star Medal for valor******* the State Department Superior Honor Award, the NATO Meritorious Service Medal, and the Gold Award of the Iraqi Order of the Date Palm. He is a Master Parachutist and is Air Assault and Ranger qualified. He has also earned the Combat Action Badge and French, British, and German Jump Wings. In 2005 he was recognized by the U.S. News and World Report as one of America’s 25 Best Leaders.

Haig never wore a CAB as it is a new award that has only been awarded since the start of the GWOT. He probably wore a CIB (Combat Infantryman’s Badge) which he earned as a junior officer in WWII (or Korea). Patraeus may have been awarded the CAB-I am unsure of the regulation-but combat badges are generally not awarded to senior officers.

Petraus was awarded this medal. I am guessing during the initial invasion of Iraq. This is the medal the Daily Kook is lying about.
BS.If you're talking about Boorda you're dead wrong. Boorda was not and is still not authorized the Combat "V" on either his Navy Achievement Medal or Navy Commendation Medal, so says the Board for Correction of Naval Records. He acknowledged that fact when he stopped wearing the Combat "V" on both awards over a year prior to killing himself. Boorda was also being treated for depression by a private physician at the time of his suicide. The individual who exposed Boorda, LtCol Roger Charles USMC Ret., also exposed several other flag officers padding their fruit salad. None of the others committed suicide. The only one responsible for Boorda shooting himself is Boorda.
I am not sure what AR 60-8-22 says about the CAB. I believe that it says that the CMB is not to be awarded to officers above the rank of Colonel-and says the same about the CIB. There may not be any similar restriction on award of the CAB, but that is the only thing I can think of that might apply (other than the Kossacks being full of crap).
The Good Conduct Medal is awarded to enlisted personnel ... attempted to seduce the commander’s wife, nor contracted more than the company average of venereal diseases.

2: Soldier must be performing assigned duties in an area where hostile fire pay or imminent danger pay is authorized.
3: Soldier must be personally present and actively engaging or being engaged by the enemy, and performing satisfactorily in accordance with the prescribed rules of engagement.
4: Soldier must not be assigned/attached to a unit that would qualify the soldier for the CIB/CMB.

The governing regulation for the award of the Combat Action Badge is AR 600-8-22. The badge was authorized by the Chief of Staff of the Army on 2 Mat 2005 and was retroactive. It may be awarded to “any soldier” (That includes General Officers)that are serving in a branch and MOS immaterial assignment in a combat arms unit in an area where hostile fire pay is authorized. When Petreaus commanded the 101st Airborne Division in Iraq he attained qualification for the CAB. Let me know when I can help again.
I think it is infinitely more likely that he earned the BSM with V in a previous conflict as he was a division commander in Iraq and probably wasn’t as likely to be in position to show valor (commanders usually have a PSD to protect them). As I said, some of the guys I drill with were wondering about the CAB-I am unsure about the requirements under the regulation.
