I think it is infinitely more likely that he earned the BSM with V in a previous conflict as he was a division commander in Iraq and probably wasn’t as likely to be in position to show valor (commanders usually have a PSD to protect them). As I said, some of the guys I drill with were wondering about the CAB-I am unsure about the requirements under the regulation.
According to his bio Gen Petraus was ambused by Saddam irregular forces during the inital invasion of Iraq. Based on what other Freepers have posted here about the CAB, that qualifies him under Army Regs.
The "V" is really called the "combat distinguishing device," which indicates on certain awards that can be earned either during combat operations or non-combat activities, e.g., the Bronze Star, Commendation Medal or Achievement Medal, that is was related to combat operations. The award states specifically whether the combat distinguishing device can be worn or not. I suspect that Patraeus won his Bronze star with a "V" during the Gulf War. The Daily Kos doesn't know what it is talking about. They are trying to make Patraeus into Boorda who was wearing the "V" device improperly, i.e., it wasn't authorized.
