N.Y. Drops Citizenship Proof For Driver's Licenses Move Should Cut Down Unlicensed Illegal Immigrants

(CBS) NEW YORK They were celebrating outside the governor's office Friday as Eliot Spitzer handed a landmark victory to a half-million illegal immigrants.
The state will no longer require proof of citizenship for driver's licenses.
"We're changing our policy with respect to getting more people out of shadows and into the system so people don't hide they're here," Spitzer said.
He said the current restrictions on non-citizens have filled the roads with unlicensed drivers five times more likely to get into accidents.
But the also called it a matter of justice.
"As long as I'm governor we won't pretend they don't exist, cut them off from society," Spitzer said.
But the action triggered a bitter response from some 9/11 family members, who said the governor would be providing identification for potential terrorists.
And a Brooklyn state senator says he'll try to overturn the decision.
"This governor has chosen to give the keys to the city, the keys to the state to terrorism," Golden said.
As for the public, it's clear that people have strong feelings on both sides of the issue.
"I don’t think if you're here illegally you should have the same privileges people who are here legally do," office manager Cliff Hoffman said.

Federal government can respond by making the NY drivers license an illegitimate ID form for federal aid and boarding planes at airport because it is not a secured ID. In other words one cannot buy an airline ticket and board an aircraft if the only ID he/she has is a NY drivers license.
This how the POS NY Democrats screw other states. Illegals will flock to NY for this driver’s license and will deploy these NY licenses in Virginia, Pennsylvania, wherever they actually live. They will now have a very nice ID to show for opening bank accounts, renting apartments etc

I’m ashamed to say that I am from NY, but I want everyone to know that I am now a resident of Florida. I changed my residency because of the politics up there and to help a pink state. I don’t actually live in the U.S.A. at all. So I no longer consider myself a New Yorker, I’m just a Navy guy now.

What really happens is other states get flooded with illegal aliens who have New York state driver's licenses for IDs
OTOH, if this spreads then we can stop griping about the SS# being used for purposes it was never supposed to be used for.
I would personally like to thank Gov. Spitzer. Here in Georgia, we have passed new laws regarding driving, you cannot get a license with proper ID, you cannot get insurance without a license and therefore you cannot register a car. We have had sob story after sob story in our local papers because the people who catered to the illegals in the auto business have seen their business drop by 40%, now maybe all of those illegals will move north to states that are much more accommodating.
Why would they need insurance? They buy their cars for $200 and if they get in an accident, they get "free" transport to the hospital and get fixed up for "free". It's already the law. If they seriously maim or kill somebody or get issued a serious ticket, they flee from the county and change their name, or to another state, or to Mexico, and start all over again.
They don't need no steenkin' insurance!

Ahem. Most of Upstate is made up of red counties. Which are depopulating rapidly as people vote with their feet. Sigh.
I know. I left one of them. The beautiful scenery and the nice neighbors weren't enough enducement for staying, paying the outrageous taxes, and being perpetually depressed because of the crumbling economy and hopeless government.
I'd go a step further and trade everything east of the Hudson to Canada for Alberta.
