Belichick Fined; Pats Lose Pick
ESPN ^ | 09/13/07

Posted on 09/13/2007 5:45:28 PM PDT by misterrob

Bill Belichick was hit with a $500,000 fine Thursday night -- the maximum allowable by NFL by-laws -- for violating the league's policy on videotaping the Jets defensive signs Sunday. In addition, Roger Goodell notified the Patriots that they would forfeit a 2008 first-round draft choice if they reach the playoffs, or second- and third-round picks if they do not qualify for the playoffs. The club was also fined $250,000.

There is no prededent for it but the Commish made a very loud and public statement on what is expected. BB had some pretty big balls to be doing this so soon after a memo comes out and in NY against his former DC. He will take the blame for not preparing his team for something that they run into during a game well, this is in the same category of dumb coaching then.

Kraft is also a powerful owner who makes the league a lot of money with TV football contracts. Goodall had to show that he wasn’t going to bend over for him. Also, since Kraft has changed his tune from “too harsh” to “just right” I would speculate that Goodall is going to be looking out for other teams.

Remember also that the NFL is a quasi-cartel. They might fight with one another here and there but they are ALL about making the $$$$.

If the next team found to be violating rules and isn’t roasted just as bad then we NE fans can yell about a double standard.

“Second, I don’t have a dog in this fight.”

Is that because Michael Vick killed it?

If that occured, you’d have already witnessed Vick’s funeral, and would be preparing to watch my trial.....

the memo came out last month

The memo came out last September and RG didn't do anything to enforce it after it was published.

In a memo to NFL head coaches and general managers on September 6, 2006, NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Ray Anderson said, "Videotaping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent's offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches' booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game."

Ya think he was jamming headsets against the Chargers the other night?

They should have forfeited the game also.Cheaters should never win.Watching last nights game with the wife, she was so exited for New England. When I told her about what they had done with the Jets, she said, that wasn’t very nice!Bless her heart! She no longer is a New England fan anymore. Many people feel betrayed as they should. How many games were fixed and how many were honest.I take the hardass approach. As far as I am concerned, they were all fixed.

Then you have no idea what you are talking about if you want to say games are fixed. At any given time you have teams spying on one another to learn opposing signs, tells or tendencies, you have players taking substances that are illegal, you have players holding, pushing off, punching each other in the guy or gouging in the fumble pile ups.

The Pats were caught using a camera to spy on the other team. They were found guilty and punished. The “cheating” is in how they chose to spy on the other team, not that they spied on the other team since spying and intel gathering are considered part of the game.

If you are going make teams forfeit games for rules violations (especially when there was no advantage gained) then you might as well shut down the league.

RG wasn’t in crackdown mode yet. I think part of all this is reminding the coaches and owners that the players aren’t the only ones in a position to get their ass kicked.

4) Belichick has never lost to a QB twice in the same season. Remember that stat? Sure , after he loses the first time, he studies their signals after video taping the coach and knows what defenses to call the 2nd time around

That is wrong the Patriots lost to Jake Plummer and the Broncos twice in 2005. Shanahan owns Bellicheat.

McNabb got his ass kicked that game. Vrabel, Seymour, Wilfork and Warren just kept hitting him. At the end he was rather broken down.

You keep saying that so and so got his ass kicked by the Gaytriots (most loyal fan base since 2001) but the scores of their Super Bowl wins suggest that they barely squeaked bye. I guess they had a good video tape guy to make all those adjustments at halftime.

Go back and watch the game and see how many times McNabb was hit. Tell me he didn’t take a beating. Tell me what video tape has to do with that? Tape really helped them contain TO that game as well.

Tape really helped the Pats last night as well.....

Sounds to me as if someone’s team got beaten by someone else’s team, and he has “issues” with that. Get a grip on it. It happens.

If your team got beat, just take it like a man. I am a Pats fan, and my team got their clock cleaned by the Colts. Pick it up and move forward...it is what your team has done.

Yep. I wouldn’t want to be Norv Turner today. And I hope he leased a home in San Diego, rather than took on a mortgage.

That said, I wish my Bengals had a low tolerance for failure as evidenced by the Chargers actions in the off season. We could use it.

Today Marvin Lewis told the media the defensive short comings are ‘our business’...as if they were a Federally funded entity.....

Well, considering all of the criminals they have on the Bengals, a federally funded entity isn’t that far off the mark.

:-)

You should read up on a subject before commenting. They have one player with a ‘criminal record’ and he’s suspended til after the eighth game of the season.

Interesting fact in 2000 I could go to a Patriots game, on the day of the game, and get a seat almost anywhere I wanted. I guess once they “won” the SuperBowl all the band-wagoners decided to join.

Completely false. The Patriots have sold out nearly 150 consecutive games. That goes back 14 seasons. I've gone to almost all of them and I haven't seen an empty seat since 1993. Nice try, super fan.
