Belichick Fined; Pats Lose Pick
ESPN ^ | 09/13/07

Posted on 09/13/2007 5:45:28 PM PDT by misterrob

Bill Belichick was hit with a $500,000 fine Thursday night -- the maximum allowable by NFL by-laws -- for violating the league's policy on videotaping the Jets defensive signs Sunday. In addition, Roger Goodell notified the Patriots that they would forfeit a 2008 first-round draft choice if they reach the playoffs, or second- and third-round picks if they do not qualify for the playoffs. The club was also fined $250,000.

Uh huh; it always comes back to bite you in the butt. What a dope Belichick was.

Most of Moss’s time here was wasted, first with the inept leadership of Denny Green, then Meathead Mike Tice and the continuation of the failed Culpepper Experiment.

I wish Randy the best and I hope he gets a ring, even if it is with Belicheat and the Pats. I always liked him.

Amazing. Already ready to diminish those three titles without any evidence of any type that they didn’t earn them. And, you want to crucify this one team for what is most likely a leage wide problem. Not condoning what the Pat’s got caught doing, but not ready to execute them either. Goodell did what was sufficient to address this issue. Now, let’s start looking at other teams who are also doing this.

Finally!! A logical approach to this problem. Listening to the media you’d have thought that spy cameras were inside the Jets team zone.

The only reason this is news is because it was BB and not Cleveland.

I agree Goodell rolled over.

Funny, every time I turn on ESPN, they’re kissing Belicheat’s ass. Sean Salisbury and Mike Golic went so far as to say that this controversy is over nothing, and Belicheat should get off with a small fine if he’s punished at all. Hate that damn network.

Amen.

All of those ex-players are just 'rah-rah' guys for the League.

They had the same attitude towards Vick-no big deal.

The Skins losing draft picks would be great for them I agree. That way they can’t waste them on short yardage backs that never get to play in short yardage situations and all of the other craziness for which they draft picks.

Being a Chargers fan, it makes me wonder about last year’s playoff game with the Pats where they won, i.e. would the outcome have been different? Who knows.

The Chargers would have won that game if Troy Brown did not strip the ball.

A more apt penalty is to forfeit the game.

We know there have been allegations by several teams of the Pats cheating for the last couple years (and not just videotaping).

Do you think they wouldn’t have cheated in a very important playoff against the Chargers where the Chargers were favored to win?

Nobody will ever know, but I’m not as naive as you apparently are.

And if Marty had not done one of his playoff chokes. If he had a better plan then his team should have won.

Why? The Commissioner said that the Pats gained no advantage that game that helped them in any way. The Jets should get a Mulligan for not being able to cover Randy Moss? He had three guys on him and still scored a big TD. And, the NY Daily News is now talking about Mangini having worked for the Pats in the past and if taping was a common practice he not only knew about it but used the film in his game prep as a Pats coordinator. Hard for him to be righteous about this.

Losing a #1 for an in game infraction that didn’t impact that particular game is pretty big. The Pats are losing someone with the talent of Ben Watson or Logan Mankins as punishment. If Goodall could prove that BB had bugged the locker room or had found some way to cheat that directly impacted the game being played then BB would likely have been suspended.

Coming from a fan of the dirtiest football franchise of all time I’ll take that with a grain of salt.

How many times does he get sacked, throw a bunch of picks or make bad decisions?

Not often. But he, and New England, played one of the worst second halves (plus three minutes or so) that I've ever seen an NFL team play in last year's AFC Championship game. It was stunningly bad.

Sort of makes me wonder what is true colors are.

With each passing ‘action’ Goodell gains more of my respect.

I think history might note he arrived ‘just in time’.

2 starting safeties out for that game.

DBs playing that were signed off the street that week.

3rd string LB trying to cover Dallas Clarke

Flu outbreak during the week

15 round slug fest the week before against a damned good Chargers team....

Oh yeah, with all these factors trying to play against one of the best offensive teams of the modern era with a HOF receiver, HOF QB and an All-Pro caliber 2nd WR.

How did the Bears do against the Colts?

I am thoroughly enjoying Goodell putting the smack down on all the problems in the league.

Oh, offensively they scored 27 points (the other 7 was an INT return for a TD) with a RB that retired after the season, a second RB that was hurt and starting WR’s that were let go prior to the start of the season by other teams.

Caldwell will forever be known as the guy with the wide eyes who dropped the ball.

The Colts won but Brady did pretty good against a fast D with not much to work with.

Belichick violated the rules and the punishment has been decided.

I heard McNabb saying he wants his SB ring. When he had a chance to win it he was blowing Campbell Chunks in the huddle .... he literally choked.
