Since 1980 California Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter has been an advocate for homeland security and had worked to secure his homes San Diego border with Mexico. His appointment to the Armed Services Committee gave him the resources needed to continue his efforts to secure the countrys borders and with the increased focus following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, he was successful in having money included in the budget for fencing the southern border states.
According to USA Election Polls (USAElectionPolls.com), Duncan Hunter is polling best in Western States likely due to name recognition and to this issue of immigration.
After construction of nearly 60-miles of fence in San Diego, the crime rate has seen a major decline of illegal border crossing, drugs, human trafficking and a more secure block to terrorists. Since that fateful day in 2001, the push for more reliable security has been tremendous, even if the reaction by many has been slow.
He also points to improved intelligence services since 2001 as being a positive step in the right direction of protecting the United States against additional attacks. While acknowledging that more needs to be done, he views the first steps as progress in securing the country. While he pushes for increased security intelligence he also pushes for the protection of the privacy rights of all legal citizens while offering them security.
Capturing over 40 percent of the recent Texas straw poll is only the beginning of a stronger campaign presence, as he also kicked off a pro troop rally in Nevada on Sept. 3rd. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he claims his experience gives him an insight into the lives and needs of servicemen around the world and believes they need to know the country is behind them.

And is he folksy enough? Folksy may be good but a television series is worth untold support. Look where it's gotten Thompson.
