Great story, though it is now about 18 months old.

Has anyone been able to figure out the “three words?”

Imagine if the next day Roosevelt had declared war on aviation

This is a silly analogy, and appears to be the premise of this whole piece. It's true President Bush said he was against terrorism itself, which is a tactic, rather than a polity.

But it made no difference did it? Since the world's terrorists are 97 percent Moslem, there was little confusion who the enemy is in practical terms. And note that the President did not order attacks against American Airlines, but against two Moslem countries associated with Islamic terrorism.

That's Point One: Not naming a specific enemy did not cause mission confusion. Point Two is just as important: We really do need to be against terrorism itself. The main danger in today's technological world is from nut-jobs from economically backward countries who use miniature bombs and tiny tech tricks to disrupt everyday life, and thereby, civilization itself. If there are non-Moslem terrorists operating in the world, that's dangerous for everyone. The forces of order need to come up with a strategy that protects civilization, and yet keeps bad guys from using the openness of civilization as a place to stick a knife.

In other words, Bush was right.

This thing is nearly two years old and appeared on one of the web sites I used to administer. It’s nothing more than a work of fiction by the author.

Even though it has been posted before, I think it ought to be a regular around 9-11. It’s a good story, and makes one think.

A sometimes science fiction writer???

Has anyone ever read Hyperion? It’s freakin’ AWESOME. Books two and three get a little loopy, but the first book was one of the best I ever read!

Middle Eastern Muslims are too retarded to accomplish conquest except by encroachment. I was more scared of the Soviets conquering us than I ever will be of Arabs/Persians doing so.

This country is less interested in religion than ever before. There is no way in hell there will be public support for the kind of strict religious practice of Islam. This time traveler knows history, but hasn't heard of "follow the money." There's no money to be made off of making the US an Islamic state. There's a ton of money to be made from our cultural appetites that Islam finds an abomination. The US and even Western Europe love sex way too much to allow Islam to take over.

My future granddaughter will be wearing this at the beach and not a burka. As long as girls like to parade around in these, they will use their power over men to guarantee their right to wear them.

“White Sox win the Series?” I muttered into the silence. “Fat chance.”

I'll believe it when I hear that the Cubs win the World Series.
