US gives stark warning to Eritrea
BBC ^ | September 09, 2007

Posted on 09/08/2007 10:18:04 PM PDT by Ghayyour

The US has issued Eritrea with its strongest warning yet over its alleged support for terrorism.

A senior US official said the presence of an exiled Somali Islamist leader in Asmara this week was further evidence Eritrea gave sanctuary to terrorists.

The gathering of further intelligence could lead to Eritrea being named as a state sponsor of terrorism - followed by sanctions, the official said.

The Eritrean government has accused the US of deliberate distortion.

A full scale war of words is now going on between Eritrea and the United States.

The US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Jendayi Frazer, said the presence of Hassan Dahir Uways at a meeting in Asmara was further evidence that Eritrea provided sanctuary for terrorists.

Rogue state

The Eritrean ministry of information website has just published a 35-point condemnation of US foreign policy accusing Jendayi Frazer herself of deliberate distortion. Speaking at the end of a visit to neighbouring Ethiopia, Miss Frazer said that Eritrea's nasty words about the US were not a significant concern.

What had got her government's attention was Eritrea's actions to destabilise other countries in the Horn of Africa and, in particular, evidence that they were harbouring terrorists.

Miss Frazer said that this was about more than just simply considering Eritrea as a rogue state in the region.

It was quite specifically Eritrea's relationship with recognised terrorists which could lead to its designation as a state sponsor of terrorism.

This, in turn, she said would bring a change in the nature of its relationship with the US and in the ability of the US and other countries to provide assistance to Eritrea's government

Eritria

I think it used to be called hell but the muslims invaded part of it and raped the demons. The demons then left after being 'bedeviled' .

There is a sizeable Ethiopian and Eritrean expatriate community in San Francisco. They mostly live in the projects alongside native-born blacks, but you don't see them on the corners hanging out. They know what this country offers to people who work hard, and don't abuse their freedom.

Plus, the females are pretty sweet-looking.

Eritrea is the land that Ethiopia used to own beside the Red Sea. They broke away from Ethiopia, Eritrea was backed by the USA, while Ethiopia was backed by the Russians, Chinese, Cubans & North Koreans... Even though the Ethiopians did in fact use American and Israeli equipment... I work with a guy that was a Tank Commander and a Foot Soldier during the war between Eritrea and Ethiopia...

Good question.

And with Iran alive and breathing nuclear fire, the Administration should place priorities first.

I never knew what Eritrea was either until I met some people from that country a few years back and subsequently became friends with them. The people I know are some of the nicest people on the planet.

The Eritrean lady I know moved away from our neighborhood--said she wanted to get away from all the "African-Americans" and Mexicans :)

And I do agree with you--the females are very pretty.

Plus you're right again, they do work hard and make the most of what this country has to offer.

Why the jaw-flapping? Eliminate his "presence" already!

I met an Eritrean woman here in Houston, she was pretty in a very strange way. She was always angry, I could never figure out the reason for her anger. I wish someone could post some pictures of Eritreans because I think they have a very distinctive look.

Eritrea claim some small islands in the Red Sea, and has an old Higgins boat as part of their Navy. That is the open top kind with a ramp on the front. Some conflice with Yemen on those Islands.

Eritrea was one of the Italian colonies, before the invasion of Ethiopia.

I have a friend who as a SEAL took part in exercises, and was shot there (shoulder only.). They were once upon a time US allies. Ethiopia has a bad case of centralization/marxism. Ethiopia has more Christian/Jewish influence, Eritria is more Arabized.

I’m not fond of either Eritrea or Ethiopia’s current governments, but I do like Eritrea’s revulsion at handouts. They got offered a sweet deal loan on a rail system after the war ended and rejected it, opting instead to dig out WW2 era Italian remnants from their museums/scrap yards instead. Simple enough tech they could keep them running, didn’t require foreign involvement and super cheap. As far as they were concerned, these did the job and didn’t put them in debt to anyone - a refreshingly rare attitude.

I’m sure a fair few environmentalists dissapproved!
