As the vote tallies were announced at the Texas Republican straw poll Saturday, at least one supporter of Rep. Ron Paul of Lake Jackson couldn't contain his frustration.
"Fix!" he yelled from the back of the ballroom at the Fort Worth Convention Center. "There's no way."
The congressman put a great deal of effort into the event in his home state, even paying to bus in supporters. They seemed to be the largest force in town. So it was a disappointment to those supporters when he came in third.
Some were convinced that Dr. Paul won.
"The results are totally wrong," said Jason Scarbrough, a Paul supporter who lives near Houston. "There were 10 times as many Ron Paul supporters here than anyone else had. There's just no way."
Though there were clearly more Paul people at the straw poll event, the congressman with the libertarian leanings had a much smaller base of support among those who could vote.
Even Dr. Paul conceded that he didn't think he could win.
"They made it very restrictive," Dr. Paul said at a rally Friday night. "But we're trying to build the party. If they want us to build the party, we can."
Saturday's vote disappointed Kathy Massey, a 45-year-old Houston woman who works in the petroleum industry.
She described Dr. Paul as a man of integrity who wants the Bill of Rights restored and a political titan.
"Las Vegas oddsmakers say he's the only one who can beat" Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, Ms. Massey said, without offering proof.

Perhaps. Ron Paul is more dangerous.
He's also a bit of a nut. And he's got some nutty ideas. Like about the War on Terror.
The former doesn't disqualify him to be President.
The latter does.
I have no desire to bash Paul.
I’m more interesting in pointing out that Duncan Hunter won. Hunter is definitely the best candidate in the race.
Don't hold your breath. I will be voting for Congressman Paul in the primaries, regardless of any and all insults thrown my way between now and then. Naturally; these same people will expect me to cast my vote for the eventual GOP nominee next November, and when they don't get it; will weep and wail as they watch Hillary Clinton take the oath of office in January of 2009. Treating people and their candidate like crap WILL come back to bite you in the behind...think about it.
Yeah, that’s the spirit. If we cannot have Ron Paul, then let them have Hillary. No wonder we don’t take the efforts of the Ron Paul types trying to take over the Republican Party and this forum very serious. You’re not so much conservatives as you are Libertarians, and not getting your way, and wounded pride will be your excuse for helping Hillary. We all knew this any way, so it’s no surprise.
Feeling hurt?
Silly me. Here I am thinking Ron Paul fanatics might — on the slim chance I admit, actually care about this country. They obviously care more about how they are treated by people they have never met and only exist in their world when they click on the internet.
My bad.
Trashing a devout Christian who wants to restore Constitutional principles again isn't my idea of comic relief. More like desperation disguised as black humor.
Have you decided who your going to support after he gets his 3%
A more important question. Do you think the GOP nominee will need the thousands of grassroots supporters that are now supporting Paul in the general?
Yeah, that's why conservative Tommy Thompson won four terms here.
More talking out of your ass as usual.
Reading from the invitation to Texas Straw Poll, the only one’s voting were “previous Convention Deligates”. Ron Paul could bus in half the state as supporters, BUT they probably were not Straw Poll vote elegible.
The GOP has been doing this to Paul since his first Congressional race. They've always backed the RINO running against him, or in some cases, the Democrat.
I wouldn't support Paul if he ran as an independent or 3rd party candidate. But I can hardly blame him if he does.
Well it is a good reason to post it...
Still love the bit from the Fred Thread...
They may be disappointed, but only a fool would be surprised.
You made the meeting then?
Can you forward me your notes...
I see a lot of Freepers have no use for the U.S. Constitution anymore.
Including his love for Shrimp subsidies.. There is nothing in the Constitution about subsidies..
