In a new outburst of antiwestern sabre-rattling, President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela has threatened Britain with revenge for the Falklands war of 1982. The belligerent Latin American leftist warned last week that his recent build-up of sophisticated Russian and Iranian weapons would be used to destroy the British fleet if it attempted to return to the South Atlantic.
Speaking on his weekly television show Alo Presidente (Hello, Mr President), Chavez denounced what he described as Britains illegal occupation of the Falklands and repeated his call for a regional military alliance against Britain and the United States.
If we had been united in the last war, we could have stopped the old empire, Chavez said, as he gesticulated to maps showing how Venezuelan aircraft and submarines would intercept British warships. Today we could sink the British fleet.
Chavez has often expressed support for Argentinas claim to the Falklands, but his latest broadside was notable for both its antiBritish vitriol and its unprecedented threats. He declared that British history was stained with the blood of South Americas indigenous people and demanded revenge for the cowardly sinking of the General Belgrano, the Argentine cruiser.
Western diplomats have long grown used to harangues from Chavez, who announced this weekend that he would negotiate with guerrillas holding dozens of hostages in Colombia, including three US contractors and Ingrid Betancourt, a French-Colombian abducted as she campaigned for president in 2002. But US and British officials have recently become more concerned by his willingness to lavish billions of dollars from Venezuelas soaring oil income on military capabilities.

His proposal here is eerily similar to the COSAS aliance that establishes itself in South America in my novel:
He can try if he wants. We’ll take both of them at once.
I double dare him.
That would occupy Saturday, but what would we do for the rest of the weekend?
FYI.
America is looking weak for not dealing with this guy, when he seized the our oil company assets there. In front of the world a bully just took something valuable of ours, and we tried to act cool and not notice, but seemed to be shaking inside. It looks to the world we are afraid, or maybe our military too extended so we can’t act.
Because of that others in the world will be more likely to act, thinking we either can’t or won’t step up.
In a few years when they have the new carriers and the JSFs, that would be a different matter.
I personally believe it is time for a joint UK and US carrier exercise in the carribean to shut this idiot up. One or two of their Invinsible class, and one Nimitz class and their escorts would be all that was needed.
Agreed. It is time we shut this idiot up. Send in a couple of Brit carriers and their excrots escorted by a single Nimitz and her escorts and cruise right off his coast.

Oh Man,, Fidel is dead! This lil jerk is begging for it.
Is this in the same paper that is telling us to get over 9/11?
...and, IMHO, we and the Brits should give it to him. And we should put him down now, as opposed to when other, stronger enemies use him, along with the likes of Iran to bleed and distract us on their terms.
Nope, this is in the UK, the other was right here at home.
What is the status of the Royal Navy now compared to 1982?
Could the Brits even begin to attempt the same operation today?
One discretely placed JDAM right through his roof.
That should do it.
I have a feeling the rest of the world sees this guy for the twit he is. Pipsqueaks like this should be ignored.
Exactly...the Quadaffi solution.
But, if the Venezuelans jumped in with their new high-performance Russian jets and missiles, they would need our help. Those aircraft have the range, the carrying capacity, and the performance to overwhelm the harriers and hurt the Brit task force badly as they pass on their way south.
One Nimitz and its escorts would eliminate all of that though and, if it came to that, IMHO, we should provide it for our allies and help forcefully put down this renegade.
Not when he is building up the military he is, and with the oil revenue he has.
We should simply call his bluff forcefully and make him look the fool. Send a joint Brit and US Navy carrier task force to the Carribean
If he does nothing, he looks like the loudmouthed, braggard and bafoon he is. If he comes out to play, that force destroys all of his new toys and his capability to house, maintain, produce, and buy more.
And history has a way of repeating.
