Chavez vows revenge for Falklands war
The Sunday Times Online (UK) ^ | September 2, 2007 | Martin Arostegui

Posted on 09/02/2007 1:51:41 PM PDT by Jeff Head

In a new outburst of antiwestern sabre-rattling, President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela has threatened Britain with “revenge” for the Falklands war of 1982. The belligerent Latin American leftist warned last week that his recent build-up of sophisticated Russian and Iranian weapons would be used to destroy the British fleet if it attempted to return to the South Atlantic.

Speaking on his weekly television show Alo Presidente (Hello, Mr President), Chavez denounced what he described as Britain’s “illegal occupation” of the Falklands and repeated his call for a regional military alliance against Britain and the United States.

“If we had been united in the last war, we could have stopped the old empire,” Chavez said, as he gesticulated to maps showing how Venezuelan aircraft and submarines would intercept British warships. “Today we could sink the British fleet.”

Chavez has often expressed support for Argentina’s claim to the Falklands, but his latest broadside was notable for both its antiBritish vitriol and its unprecedented threats. He declared that British history was “stained with the blood of South America’s indigenous people” and demanded revenge for the “cowardly” sinking of the General Belgrano, the Argentine cruiser.

Western diplomats have long grown used to harangues from Chavez, who announced this weekend that he would negotiate with guerrillas holding dozens of hostages in Colombia, including three US contractors and Ingrid Betancourt, a French-Colombian abducted as she campaigned for president in 2002. But US and British officials have recently become more concerned by his willingness to lavish billions of dollars from Venezuela’s soaring oil income on military capabilities.

I understand from some Venezuelan friends that Chavez uses the old Castro tactic of sleeping in a different place every night. Paranoid as hell.

If you are gonna make these kinds of threats...you damn well better be on the move!

I’m sure they said that about Hitler too.

The UK could do the same. They still have two of their carriers operational, and they have new Amphibious assault ships that are stronger than what they had back then, and decent escorts.

Actually, no. The Brits have a heck of a lot more capability than they did in 1982, but they've recently given up (until the new carriers come online in 2012 or so) what was probably THE critical capability back in '82: the ability to provide organic fighter air cover to their task forces.

With the retirement of the Sea Harrier FA.2 fleet last year the Brits can now only call on the RAF Harrier GRs (7, 7a and 9s), which lack internal radar and the ability to carry AIM-120s. BIG mistake on the Brits part, one they justified partly under the rationale that in future conflicts they would either fight alongside the US, or would operate in environments where organic air cover wasn't needed.

Had they retained the Sea Harrier FA.2 with its Blue Vixen radar AMRAAMs a repeat of '82 where Comrade Hugo decided to come to play would be possible. Without ... the TFs would be easy meat.

When Castro finally croaks Chavez will use the occasion of a naked Cuba to assert his 'defense' of the basin. He will use his new toys to help the Cubans 'resist' the US-backed efforts of the Mas-Santos group to 'steal' the government.

At that time the excrement will strike the proverbial cooling appliance.

Well, it is hard to look at Central and South America and come away with a view that is much different than yours. There are some bright spots, but nothing like north of the Rio Grande.

If people choose to live a simpler lifestyle, I can understand. I don’t quite understand the desire to live in huts. I guess nobody really does want to, but the ability for them to advance sure seems stunted down there.

I’ll admit to not really understanding why more of those nations haven’t done better.

Should also add that the Brits could have upgraded their RAF Harriers with either Blue Vixen or the US’s APG-65 (As the US Marines, Italians and Spanish have) ... which would also permit organic air cover capability.

I have never understood folks like Belafonte, Asner and Glover.

Self important blowhards like the above only tow the leftist party line because it's the "in" thing.

Sounds like a job for Sniper Girl...

Seriously, why don't we sanction someone to go drill Chavez a new fifty caliber anus, right in the middle of his forehead?? Think what that would do for the quality of his speeches...

>>>Agreed. It is time we shut this idiot up. Send in a couple of Brit carriers and their excrots escorted by a single Nimitz and her escorts and cruise right off his coast.<<<

We need to handle Chavez the same way Prime Minister Howard of Australia handled North Korea.

Evidently they told them once, through diplomatic channels, to stop sending ships with drugs to Australia. Evidently, last week, an NK ship carrying drugs approached the coast and the Australian forces dropped 2 ea 2000# bombs on it and sent it to the bottom.

Put an end to the provocation first, clean up diplomatic problems later!

Then I can’t see it happening, unless it’s part of a global free for all, a pig pile on the USA and Britain. Taiwan, Iran/Hormuz at the same time, would greatly over stretch us. That’s when the second tier enemies would jump into the fray.

Seems I read some books about this kind of scenario......

The [Iranians] President’s chief strategist, Hassan Abbassi, has come up with a war plan based on the premise that “Britain is the mother of all evils” – the evils being America, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, the Gulf states and even Canada, all of whom are the malign progeny of the British Empire. “We have a strategy drawn up for the destruction of Anglo-Saxon civilization,” says Mr Abbassi. “There are 29 sensitive sites in the U.S. and in the West. We have already spied on these sites and we know how we are going to attack them… Once we have defeated the Anglo-Saxons the rest will run for cover.”

The IRGC chief warned that Iran was seeing through “critical days” and “fate-determining years”. He described the purpose of Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution as the “Salvation of Muslims” from the hands of the “oppressive U.S. and Israel”.

I’ll admit to not really understanding why more of those nations haven’t done better.

IMHO it is mainly because they keep pointing the finger at the west/US...and not accepting the fact that THEY are responsible for their own situation and problems....nothing will ever change until you first accept the truth...

“I double dare him.”

That may not necessarily be the government’s attitude.

Out of just about any group, there are bound to be a few really active individuals. These are the left’s...

I agree with you. It just seems these few have taken leftist steroids or something. They’re in a whole class of their own.

“It looks to the world we are afraid, ...”

We are not the macho nation that we were right after WWII. That’s why we allow immigration of people who hate this country and whose intent it is to destroy it from within. Yes, we are afraid - it is the old appeasing game all over again.
