WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation has delayed plans to open the border to long-haul Mexican trucks until at least Thursday, after earlier reports that it could happen over Labor Day weekend.
In a filing yesterday in the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, government attorneys said the agency expects to get the OK from its inspector general on Wednesday that would allow it to begin the controversial cross border trucking experiment.

The main problem isn’t the trucks, it is the drivers. Mexico has no data base for drivers licenses that ties traffic violations with the driver. Truck drivers do NOT have to fill out a logbook of how many hours they have been on duty in Mexico.
Their drivers do not consider a truck with inoperable brake lights as a safety issue. This is a cultural problem from where I sit.

The options of trying to escape this government sponsored lawlessness, are becoming very scarce.

Although I’m all for keeping the mex truckers out the whole situation makes me smile a bit. A couple of years ago on a thread discussing overseas outsourcing and the flow of tech jobs out of the U.S. a couple of posters admonished those who were outraged that these jobs were being sent out of the country that the companies had every right to save money by doing the work overseas. They told those who were concerned to find a new occupation like they were in, interstate transportation of goods. Their idea was that they were safe because you can’t transport goods in the U.S. from foreign roads. Now that the prospect of foreign trucks and truckers driving on U.S. roads and undercutting their businesses is about to become reality I wonder what they think of outsourcing now.

And a major safety problem, when all is said and done!
It was reported on one of the news channels yesterday (Glenn Beck or Lou Dobbs?) that only one out of every ten trucks coming accross the border will be inspected. Ten percent - at the most. My first thought was, “Well, the coyotes will now become big-rig drivers.” I can just hear the talk between them, laughing at how much more money they are going to be making. (Not to mention the drug smugglers.)

It will be interesting to see who Bush goes to work for after his term is over. Bush’s relentless pushing of active foreign involvement in our country (Dubai ports deal, immigration amnesty, Mexican trucks deal, etc) just makes me wonder where he will end up.

On that note, I'm glad that Ed Gillespie is back at the RNC in some regard. Gillespie is a fine person. His successors at the RNC never measured up to him including Ken Mehlman or Mel Martinez.
But according to the article, they have to follow the same laws and regulations.

Do you honestly think they are going to keep a logbook in Mexico showing that they have driven all night getting to the border? That would put them off duty for 10 hours before they could start driving in the US.
Their logbook is going to show they started work just before they arrived at the border.
