Fred Thompson, the actor and former Tennessee senator whose flirtation with a presidential bid has frustrated some supporters, will file papers to officially enter the race next Thursday, his campaign manager told key backers this afternoon.

"Fred is definitely is going to make the race," campaign manager Bill Lacy told members of the Thompson campaign's national finance team in a conference call. "We are in this race to win." Lacy said Thompson will also announce his campaign on a webcast next Thursday. After that he is expected to visit Iowa Sept. 7, New Hampshire on Sept. 8 and 9, and South Carolina after that. There will also be events Sept. 13-15 in Florida and Tennessee, Lacy said.

Thompson's entry in the race has been a foregone conclusion for weeks, but his refusal to definitively declare his candidacy had begun to irritate some backers who were concerned he had lost precious momentum. Nonetheless, in most national polls he is in second place among Republican hopefuls, trailing Rudy Giuliani and leading Mitt Romney.

It mostly irritated Romney backers who watched Fred blow by Mitt without officially entering the race.

Fred Thompson's window of opportunity could hardly have been wider. .... But, thanks to a number of missteps and opportunities his pseudo-campaign has failed to capitalize on, Thompson's window is now closed...

There ya have it. He can't get in cuz it's already too late. It is written.

I like the guy. I hope he’s as good on the stump as we presume he should be. He can be a powerful and effective speaker. I’ve heard a couple of speeches though, that while they weren’t awful they just weren’t great.

Time will tell. I’m not really invested in anybody yet. I like all of our candidates for various reasons. Yah, even Rudy. Romney is OK, except for the almost creepy perfect persona. I’m not sure he can win on the national level.

But Fred can, and so can Rudy. We’ll see.

It’s nice that we’ve actually got some depth on the bench this time around. There must really be some frustrated democrats. They’re the ones really sucking air. After eight years of an (R) in the white house they’ve practically got a gimme election. That’s just the way of things... and so this golden opportunity crops up and the best they can come up with is Hillary? And Obama? And Edwards? Holey second-string Batman!

Gore was embarrassing enough, but then they put up Kerry? Sheesh, they might as well have run Jane Fonda. All they need to do is run some mildly acceptable democrat governor from someplace and they’d own the election. But no...

It’s reminiscent of back when all we had was Bob Dole. Sure he was a nice guy and a war hero, but he was hardly exciting.

And responsibility belongs to adults...he had contractual obligations to meet:

August 2007 - Now that Mr. Thompson seems poised to re-enter politics as a Republican presidential candidate, his career will take another twist. In May, he asked NBC to release him from further “Law & Order” commitments; more recently, NBC said it was ready to stop showing reruns of the episodes he appears in because of federal equal time regulations for presidential candidates.

Source

July 2007 - LOS ANGELES - If Fred Thompson makes it official and throws his hat in the ring for President, NBC will pull future reruns of "Law & Order" featuring the actor after Sept. 1, executive producer Dick Wolf said yesterday.Wolf, reading from an official NBC statement yesterday, said the rule applies when a person legally qualifies as a candidate.

"If Fred Thompson formally declares his intention to run for President, NBC will not schedule any further repeats of 'Law & Order' featuring Mr. Thompson beyond those already scheduled, which conclude on Saturday, Sept. 1," Wolf said. Wolf assured that NBC would take all "appropriate steps consistent with FCC regulations." Thompson fans would, however, be able to see him in reruns airing on TNT.

Nonsense. He’s got contract issues to get through.

Personally this whole campaign is starting too freakin’ early. This shouldn’t be underway until spring. Six or eight months of election prep... plenty. But doing this for a freaking year and a half is just too much.

"Holey second-string Batman!"

Shhhhhh. Keep it quiet. Here comes the Newt after Fred.

Reason for Newt:
1. He has so much money he has no idea what to do with it.
2. The biggest ego in the country.
3. He honestly believes he can out debate anyone running.
