NEW YORK In a statement to the press late this afternoon, Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho blamed the Idaho Statesman of Boise for his legal and political troubles stemming from his arrest in a sex-related matter at an airport men's room in Minnesota in June.
He denounced the longstanding probes by the Statesman -- he called it a "witch hunt" -- for inspiring him to plead guilty to the offense even though he said he was actually innocent. He said he had been "viciously harassed" by the newspaper. "I am not gay," he said twice. "I love my wife."
The Statesman had looked into allegations about Craig but did not run a lengthy report until today -- the day after his arrest in June became public. But Craig pointed to today's story, and suggested that the paper's probes and the "rumors" they produced had caused him to want to put the matter behind him -- so he pleaded guilty to the men's room charge and told no one about it. "In June, I overreacted and made a poor decision," he said.
Craig also said he would not step down as senator and still planned to serve his state in Washington, and walked away without answering questions from the media...."

Liberals always, always, close ranks and defend against proven wrongdoing by one of their own. Want some examples? Billy Clinton, Barney Frank, Gerry Studds, William Jefferson, to name a few.
Conservatives can’t wait to throw their own overboard on the least hint of impropriety. Proof? Who needs it? Some two-bit “journalist” breaks a scoop and our guy is as good as gone.
Considering that Soros and Mrs. Clinton have their people working 24/7 to discredit conservatives, all I can say is “Congratulations, Madame President!”
I have no idea whether this Craig guy is gay or not. I live a long way from Idaho. But I understand he’s a solid conservative. Oh well, it was in the paper, ya know.
Craig then pled guilty to a lesser charge stemming from the specific incident. Case closed. He was read his rights, just like you or I would be in a criminal arrest, he refused a lawyer's counsel on his own volition. He then pled guilty to it and told no one.
Sorry, but by all definition, it was illegal and he, an indivdual who understands the legal system and the laws, pled guilty.
Now he is back pedaling on that admission in the face of the other allegations and investigations which he himself admits are ongoing.
Say what you will...but this whole arguemnt that it is nothing more than a flirtation like coming on to a girl is false and laughable on its face. It was a public restroom in a large airport where a father and his young son could walk into anytime. It is a sewrious moral issue...and a serious breach of trust and judgement. It is not the type of environemtn we want or expect in Idaho, regardless of what other states may say...but apparently in Minnesota they have laws governing the same.
The police were active in trying to curb the crime that went on there...as well they should be. Public indeceny is a crime and that's what they were there for and here comes Senator Craig going through all the motions, who is himself being investigated for such behavior and you want me to believe it was allsome kind of coincidence?
As I said, for me at least, that dog don't hunt...particularly when we are talking about my senatorial representative. He should resign now before the spectacle gets worse and worse IMHO.
Very sad that Craig was involved in such an incident...very great laspe of trust and many levels and a lapse in judgement. He should resign now so the conservative governor here in Idaho can appoint a conservative to take his place and fill out his term.
Do you sell used cars? If so, does anyone swallow your lines?
He has a ‘wide stance’...excuse me, but when you use the crapper, you drop your drawers around your feet. Unless he has about a 90 inch waist, his pants will keep his feet in bounds.
If his waist is 90+ inches, then all he needs to do is keep his feet somewhat close together. Sorry, but any man who can’t keep his feet inside his own stall is a flaming homo! I’m 49, and have traveled a lot...used a lot of airport restrooms, and have NEVER seen another man’s foot in my stall.
And no one in an airport restroom waits around so he can get a private stall with no one next to him. Even if it was that way when you entered, there would be no reason to believe it would be true 60 seconds later.
And if you WERE worried about someone in a stall, you’d glance very briefly at an angle under the door to see if the occupant had fallen over. I have NEVER seen someone’s eyeball in the door crack in the men’s room. BTW - I’ve just spent 6 months at a FOB in Afghanistan with curtains for ‘privacy’ - and nope, I didn’t get a lot of ‘lookers’ there, either.
Sorry. Craig’s a homo, a hypocrite and has shown pee-poor judgment. He needs to leave ASAP!
What, specifically, did he plead guilty to?
Ha-ha-ha homo.
Right. I suppose the the paper made him not tell his wife he was arrested and what he was alleged to have done?
Because all innocent husbands who are straight and not solicitating gay sex in airport bathrooms would cover up this arrest from their own spouse rather then seek their counsel, support or simply use as a sounding board?
Wonderful characters representing us in D.C.
Another article pointed out that there are queer websites that actually rate public restrooms. Visitors talk about their sexual encounters at these places and even post warnings about police undercover operations.
Seems to me, someone overreacting after being charged with a crime he allegedly did not commit, would include demanding innocence, and outrage at the charges. That didn't happen, and what he categorized as "overreacting" was pleading guilty to the alleged charge or a lesser charge. Wanting to make it just "go away" by pleading guilty to something he allegedly did not do, is not the sign of an innocent, or credible individual, in my opinion.
Agree, and he admitted he just wanted this to "go away". That in itself is extremely suspect. A normal, innocent person would be outraged at these charges and allegations, and would be demanding justice and declaring innocence, not to mention voicing total outrage at the allegations.
Thanks for the links, Jeff.
That or they would be shaky and horrified of the crime alleged. Either reaction would lead to the probable sought after support of the spouse and denial of charges presented.
I know what Craig is trying to do. Despite all evidence making it very clear what happened and what he was doing, he thinks he can just say up is down and enough gullibles will latch on and start spinning away until the substance of what happened gets lost in “what ifs” that would make him qualified for sainthood. Ref. Clinton. We can see some of those gullibles here at Freerepublic trying desperately to spin this or believe it’s anything other then what it is.
It won’t work.
Dems will use this to attck the party as a whole gleefully. Republicans are still skittish after Foley and will want him out. Gays won’t like he’s a) a Republican and b) lying about his sexuality. The majority of the rest of the America places no premium on this Idaho Republican Senator retaining his job, not like he’s a quarterback for the Falcons after all...
And to top it all off Craig thinks his being gay or not is the most worrisome charge to deny. It’s not. he entered into a legal contract with his wife. gay or not, I’m pretty certain vows of fidelity come with that contract. Vows he obviously broke. Then there’s the need to do this in a PUBLIC bathroom children enter. It’s sick. I certainly wouldn’t want to enter a bathroom with this going on, but horrific any child should be exposed to this. Couldn’t even restrain himself and use a hotel room like the old days?
Nah, Craig is blowing smoke. that may have worked in ‘82, it’s not going to work now.
I know now to keep my feet very still in the stall. Thanks to Larry.
Do not trust what you read in print or see on TV anymore. Wait until things are logical and not emotional.
After reading through available material, reports and what was provided by JH, it seems clear the suspect was attempting to get through this little event by just going along, pleading it down, not informing anyone, and hoping no one would notice. None of this is a sign of an innocent individual.
Having said that, I must say, based on his actions, it's hard to believe this individual is a state senator, as his conduct and his actions are not those exhibited by a credible, sincere, innocent person.
