I had a great uncle who served in the Philippines during the Sapanish-American War as an Army scout. The way I understand it, the .45 was necessary because of its stopping power against some of the crazed natives who were attacking them. As an old sailor [not drunk] myself who served in the Gator Navy, that's the best I can do.

Sorry, your history is lacking. They may have been “native” to the islands, but they were Moros, an Islamic (muslim) group, who were not “crazed”, they went after the infadels in suicide fashion. Suicide bombers, imagine that. And the .38 could not stop them. Therefore, the .45.
