For the last several months, G.I. Joe fans have been voicing their concerns and outrage online over rumors that Paramount may make drastic changes to the franchise when they bring it to the silver screen as a live-action tentpole release. A new report recounting the political and marketing challenges facing a G.I. Joe movie will likely do little to quell their fears.
AdAge.com spoke with Hasbro and Paramount execs about the challenges of marketing a film about the U.S. military at a time when the current U.S. administration and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are at a low-point in global polls. When a studio makes a film as expensive as G.I. Joe will likely be, they want to know that as many people as possible around the world will want to see it.
In other words, G.I. Joe -- "A Real American Hero" -- is a tough sell. As Hasbro COO Brian Goldner informed AdAge, "There are always challenges. ... GI Joe is not just a brand that represents the military; it also represents great characters."
The paper confirmed earlier reports that the film might be marketed in the U.S. as G.I. Joe and as Action Man overseas. Goldner said, "We'll weigh our options. Clearly we do a lot of work on consumer insight."
Paramount marketing honcho Rob Moore told AdAge, "Until there's a [locked] script, I don't think you can really comment on what the international reaction will be. In Bourne Ultimatum, you have the story of what is essentially an American spy. But the characterization of the military and the CIA is: They're the bad guys. In any event, there are parts of the world where it's an issue, like Western Europe, and parts where it isn't, like the U.K., Australia and Asia."
Maybe the movie should be set during WWII and we'll see how much Western Europe minds a movie about the American military.
There were online reports last week that Stephen Sommers (The Mummy) was attached to direct. Later, it was reported he was off the project because of his salary demands ($10 million). Apparently, Mark Wahlberg is the front runner to play Duke. If so, I hope this movie never sees the light of day.
Marky Mark is a scumbag liberal..
Barbie comes with G.I. Joe
she fakes it with Ken.
Sounds like a Hollywood M.O.
How do you ruin a good patriotic movie hire liberal writers, directors, and actors.
If the rumors are true, the writers also had Jason Statham in mind as Action Man. If so, this movie could make The Transfomers look light high art in comparison.
Joe storms Gitmo and releases all the prisoners
Joe brings peace to the Middle East by sabotaging Israel's nuke program
Viewers don't ask, Joe doesn't tell
Mitchell Paige, for example.
...yeah, we wouldn’t want to portray the military in a positive light during a war that Liberals don’t like - got it...
I actually like Jason Stratham...
Good cheese!
Thank goodness Mitch Paige isn't around to see this.
They could make a MINT with this movie by just going balls to the wall, unapologetically pro-American, kick-ass, clearly define the enemies as bad guys, the US Military as the good guys, and winning DECISIVELY.
But, they don’t have the balls that Matt & Trey have.
Libs won’t go see the movie anyway and the lib critics will hate the whole idea, so.....
Why not go all out and make a movie that will SELL?1?
(Sorry. Forgot I was talking about hollywood.)
He'll save a bunch of homosexuals taken hostage by blood thirsty Christian terrorists.
Another plotlike for GI Joe:
Joe converts to Islam, goes on his own Jihad and forces Barbie to wear a burka.
Is that Chuck Norris?
LOL, my 6&7 yr olds have their gi joes spread throughout their bedroom right now and are in the process of killing and/or capturing the enemy. There must be 15 joes, along with the necessary items: guns guns and more guns of all sizes and calibers, grenade launchers, off-road-vehicles, motorcycle, and assorted boots and hats.
Right now the enemies are “the germans.”
think hollyweird.
Which two are going to be married, and its not lady jane.
They could make a whole movie just out of the mooselimbs who claimed to have a soldier hostage, and it turned out to be a GI Joe DOLL.
An FR classic
