Hurricane Dean Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | August 19, 2007 | NOAA/NWS

Posted on 08/19/2007 3:52:51 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Dean is moving west-northwest through the Caribbean Sea. The current NHC forecast track indicates Dean's powerful center core will pass just south of the southwestern peninsula of Haiti, and should skirt Jamaica's southern shoreline. The storm maintained strong Category 4 wind status through the night during an eyewall replacement cycle. However, the minimum pressure supports Category 5, and additional strengthening of winds is likely.

Tourists in Jamaica crowded airports Saturday to leave the island nation. Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller addressed the Jamaican people, asking that everyone put aside their political differences and work together in advance of the imminent storm preceding Jamaica's general election scheduled for August 27. PM Miller announced that the Jamaican power grid and water would likely be shut down early Sunday morning in advance of the storm, and strongly urged citizens to seek shelter.

The United States and Barbados have pledged hurricane relief supplies and support to Jamaica as needed. No word yet from the United Nations...

we are getting gusts to almost 30 knots here, I guess just a little touch of what the real stuff is like.

I noticed too how crisply clear the skies were for a mid-August day all the way up here.

Looks like the forecast position is the current official forecast.

What is ManbearPig?. I have heard this word so much but no idea what it means.

It refers to Algore Goracle, the High Priest of Global Warming. I couldn't tell you how he got it.

We have a situation in Lovers’ Lane in St. Thomas where persons were trapped in a house, police went to assist them and they refused the assistance of the police.

I couldn't help but laugh.

Mocking people who care what happens to you is asinine. The TV anchors might hype the situation, but they make people aware of what's going on and people in harm's way do need prayers.

If you don't want prayers, just say so. Most people here pray for others even when we don't know all of the circumstances.

The latest ERC is over, so I'm not surprised. The flight-level winds don't (yet) reflect a strengthening.

When it comes to science or geography Fox is a looser. I like it when they report things like ‘Hurricane with 145MPH winds hits Jamaca.” Kind of like NOLA. Sure the winds may be 145 MPH at the center but fall of quickly when you gain a little distance yourself from the eye wall. Charely came right through here but only a few miles away from the eyewall there was virutally no damage. I think Katrina MAX winds in NOLA were 80 MPH or so.

This doesn't make sense. The models have dropped south, big time. The cone which was just barely clipping Brownsville, now seems to be up to CC.
