Hurricane Dean Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | August 19, 2007 | NOAA/NWS

Posted on 08/19/2007 3:52:51 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Dean is moving west-northwest through the Caribbean Sea. The current NHC forecast track indicates Dean's powerful center core will pass just south of the southwestern peninsula of Haiti, and should skirt Jamaica's southern shoreline. The storm maintained strong Category 4 wind status through the night during an eyewall replacement cycle. However, the minimum pressure supports Category 5, and additional strengthening of winds is likely.

Tourists in Jamaica crowded airports Saturday to leave the island nation. Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller addressed the Jamaican people, asking that everyone put aside their political differences and work together in advance of the imminent storm preceding Jamaica's general election scheduled for August 27. PM Miller announced that the Jamaican power grid and water would likely be shut down early Sunday morning in advance of the storm, and strongly urged citizens to seek shelter.

The United States and Barbados have pledged hurricane relief supplies and support to Jamaica as needed. No word yet from the United Nations...

The GFDL model run on Weatherunderground is SCARY! Bad for us too! Looks like a strike just south of Brownsville as a 4, but a jit on Cancun/Cozumel as a very strong 5!

Are you sure you’re looking at the latest models regarding where it’s going? (Try reloading) All the models have pushed landfall much further south than that now - try north to central mexico.

Dominic Davis (Fox News ~6:03 pm Aug 19) strikes again. According to her, “the northern eyewall is scrapping the southern part of Texas right now”

Yesterday she mixed up Mexico with Canada.

Today, she is swapping Texas for Jamaica.

But she is a cute babe.

The stranded fishermen were on the tiny islands just South of Kingston.

About two hours ago the NOAA Nat'l Weather Service National Hurricane Center located Hurricane Dean 17.3 N 76.8 W at 5:00 p.m. EDT.

Hurricane Force Winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 KM) from the center and Tropical Storm Force winds extend outward up to 205 miles (335 KM).

Estimated movement toward the West clocked in at near 20 mph. Maximum sustained winds were 145 mph. Minimum central pressure was 930 MB.

From the detailed map below showing the parishes and some small towns in Jamaica, and according to the NHS report, Jamaica has had hurricane force winds hitting up to 10 miles inland and tropical storm force winds further inland.

Hurricane force winds should pass West out of St. Catherine Parish within the next hour or two. According to reports from their Nationwide Radio Jamaica sounds to be hanging in there.

Mitch was substantially further south than Dean, bypassing the Yucatan Peninsula until took out much of Honduras and Nicaragua, dumping rain and causing massive mudslides in Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Guatemala too.

Well, at 6:08, FOX's Marianne Silber had retreated inside and was going to go downstairs. I think she's in the Pegausus Hotel ( right center. ) I recognize those tennis courts. Not really sure, though. Could be the wind is shifting to blow directly into her balcony, so subjectively it would be "getting worse", even though the eye is definitely moving well to the west of Kingston at this hour.

Yeah, I was referring more to the mudslides and deaths with Mitch... probably ought to be more clear next time.
