Hurricane Dean Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | August 19, 2007 | NOAA/NWS

Posted on 08/19/2007 3:52:51 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Dean is moving west-northwest through the Caribbean Sea. The current NHC forecast track indicates Dean's powerful center core will pass just south of the southwestern peninsula of Haiti, and should skirt Jamaica's southern shoreline. The storm maintained strong Category 4 wind status through the night during an eyewall replacement cycle. However, the minimum pressure supports Category 5, and additional strengthening of winds is likely.

Tourists in Jamaica crowded airports Saturday to leave the island nation. Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller addressed the Jamaican people, asking that everyone put aside their political differences and work together in advance of the imminent storm preceding Jamaica's general election scheduled for August 27. PM Miller announced that the Jamaican power grid and water would likely be shut down early Sunday morning in advance of the storm, and strongly urged citizens to seek shelter.

The United States and Barbados have pledged hurricane relief supplies and support to Jamaica as needed. No word yet from the United Nations...

After visiting the Caymans nine times over the last decade and a half, I feel like it’s somewhat of a second home and I know the island quite well. A Cat.5 storm carries with it an 18-25 ft. storm surge and there’s not much elevation on Grand Cayman and even less on little Cayman. A 20 foot surge would wash over much of Grand Cayman and I suspect over all of Little Cayman. The Brac should be OK.

Where do those people remaining on Grand Cayman and Little Cayman go to be safe?

Prayers out to all

The rest of us should not have to forgo the latest technology just because they can’t use it.

Perhaps someone should start a separate modern day hurricane thread.

Are you thinking of Hurricane Mitch in 1998?

I understand, and I will explain. The storm threads and the graphics host sites experience extremely high traffic when landfall is imminent. The Katrina threads had over one million hits.

Besides rural people who do not have access to broadband, there are FReepers who lose their broadband connections during the storms (e.g. no electricity for modems). They are only left with dial up connections, running off laptops via batteries. I labor to maintain these threads for people who are potentially in the storm's path with life and property on the line.

Most problematic are the looped graphics that hang up the best broadband connection when the host sites are completely overwhelmed with traffic. Last, and the least, there are the stunning 4000 by 7200 pixel animations that inevitably get addressed to me, and hose up my window to the point I can't find posts addressed to me.

Links with colorful descriptions have worked well over the years.

The buoy data system needs to be privatized. It seems once they go out of service they seldom come back,it's a national disgrace.

I would love to know what is steering this thing, seems to have very strong steering currents.

I wish GW would tell the truth about who and what run La. Nothing but lib/dems who have zero mgmt. skills. Instead he skirts around what really happened, a failure to manage by the dems in charge.

Apparently not. I used to have Java but just did a check and it’s not showing, so I just downloaded the latest version but I’m still not getting it to work.

Can you help with that?

Maybe your browser security is set to high, should be at medium.

Try doing a disk cleanup, too.

Security is at medium. I’ll try disk cleanup. I can see the latest Java that I just downloaded in my program files, so it’s there. It’s just not working.

You might have to reboot, sometimes that is necessary when installing new software

If you are using Firefox, it isn’t the most friendly browser for Java.
