Financial pressures force Snow departure
By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent
WASHINGTON - White House press secretary Tony Snow said Friday he'll leave sometime before the end of the Bush presidency because of financial pressures.
He declined to say when he would depart, but that, "I'm going to stay as long as I can."
The 52-year-old Snow, the father of three children, earns $168,000 as an assistant to the president but made considerably more as a conservative pundit and syndicated talk-show host on Fox News Radio. He was named press secretary on April 26, 2006.
The White House has been shaken by the resignations of some of President Bush's closest aides. Political strategist Karl Rove announced Monday that he would leave at the end of the month. Longtime Bush adviser Dan Bartlett left earlier this year and Andrew Card left earlier as Bush's chief of staff.
Bush's term ends on Jan. 20, 2009.
"I will not be able to make it to the end of this administration, just financially," Snow said. "This job has been such a pleasant surprise in how much I like it. I love it."
Snow has been undergoing chemotherapy after doctors discovered a recurrence of colon cancer in March. He said the last of eight scheduled chemotherapy treatments would be on Friday. On Monday he will have a CAT scan to evaluate his progress.
Dittoes.
>>Sounds like a good reason to me. On what basis are you claiming that Tony Snow lied about this?
Well, in my defense I said I thought that, not that I claimed that. But either way, I was both unaware that he cited financial concerns from the beginning and then I spoke rashly about somebody I respect. I’m sorry I did that.
Thanks. That was a thoughtful and honest response.
This is an example of how Free Republic distinguishes itself from other forums. People think things, throw them out there, others challenge and rationale discussion ensues in many cases. We check ourselves. And we are not above retracting comments if facts prove otherwise. Not always but in many cases. I know I have been laid to waste a few times.
The dems only know how to emote not discuss. And Clinton taught them to NEVER admit a single mistake. The truth doesn’t matter to them. What matters to them is winning and power.
I’m not going to question Tony on this one. I believe that Tony knows he’s going to die in the next couple of years and he wants to gather enough cash for his wife and children to live on for the rest of their lives.
Hearing him give a Snow job to defend the indefensible shamesty bill was totally disgusting.
Was his family used to living on a seven figure income? Could there be pressure from the wife to return her to the lifestyle to which she was accustomed?
But, he does need to build up a nest egg for the famaily, since he probably can not buy anymore life insurance.
Gee, I hope Tony has had the intelligence not to marry a woman like that, who pressures a sick man to go out and earn more money. Man,that would be cold. I never had much respect for women who look at their man as a “Johnny Paycheck.”
Thank you for your prayers, saveliberty. Friend is nearly 80, has Parkinson’s with slight dementia, was a terrific runner. Amazing to see how flexible he still is. How many his age—and many, many much, much younger, can left their foot up to their chair to tie a shoe?
All jurors sat for 4 hours, went to lunch, came back—all dismissed. We have one day, one trial here so that was it
Well, God bless Tony. Glad to hear he's doing well physically.
I'm late to this thread, but I agree totally. Tony Snow is still an extremely attractive man.
You’re welcome, GoldwaterChick! Your friend is amazing and I will say more prayers.
:-) Good that your trial was short.
Thanks, alnick! He really sounds upbeat, so I think it’s not just physically where he’s doing well.
;-) He wants us to understand that he’s doing great and that he is going to beat this. And we need to trust him enough to believe that he is beating it.
Tony Snow's colon cancer has metastasized to his liver (Stage IV). The five year survival for Stage IV colon cancer is less than 5% and the median survival duration is 16.5 months.
Tony Snow's metastasis was diagnosed last March. In four and one half years, he will have a 95% statistical chance of being dead and, in 11 months, he will have a 50% chance of being dead.
"One year" may be the rest of Tony Snow's life and he needs to ensure the future of his children that may soon be without a father.
U.S. Grant used the last year of his life while dying of throat cancer to write the autobiography that supported his family financially after his death and Grant finished that autobiography just a few days before his death.
I get your point that it could be finance related even if the cause is illness rather than simply money. I wish I had posted differently.
He took a 90% pay cut from his $1.75 million he was getting at Fox
If you or anyone can find them I want to hear about it, so i can tell “uncle Fidel”
“The Hildabeast” I like it yours? the originator deserves credit!
Nah....that's a totally accurate term that's been on FR for more than 10 years, I'm sure.
It's one of those "perfect fit" words that describe someone/something without further explanation.
I wonder who will be telling us that immigration reform isn’t amnesty and the SPP is only about jelly beans after he’s gone?
Thank you for your posts and testimony. Only someone who has gone through this themselves or with a loved one can possibly understand. P.S. I think doctors’ jobs are to be negative about anyone’s prognosis. They are often proved wrong.
