Financial pressures force Snow departure

By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent

WASHINGTON - White House press secretary Tony Snow said Friday he'll leave sometime before the end of the Bush presidency because of financial pressures.

He declined to say when he would depart, but that, "I'm going to stay as long as I can."

The 52-year-old Snow, the father of three children, earns $168,000 as an assistant to the president but made considerably more as a conservative pundit and syndicated talk-show host on Fox News Radio. He was named press secretary on April 26, 2006.

The White House has been shaken by the resignations of some of President Bush's closest aides. Political strategist Karl Rove announced Monday that he would leave at the end of the month. Longtime Bush adviser Dan Bartlett left earlier this year and Andrew Card left earlier as Bush's chief of staff.

Bush's term ends on Jan. 20, 2009.

"I will not be able to make it to the end of this administration, just financially," Snow said. "This job has been such a pleasant surprise in how much I like it. I love it."

Snow has been undergoing chemotherapy after doctors discovered a recurrence of colon cancer in March. He said the last of eight scheduled chemotherapy treatments would be on Friday. On Monday he will have a CAT scan to evaluate his progress.

They think it's really cool that he is suffering.

Wonder how they'd feel if we expressed those same emotions about Elizabeth Edward's cancer.

DUers are a sick bunch.

I think that Tony Snow did as well as anyone could have done at representing the Bush Administration to a sickeningly hostile, biased MSM White House Press Corps.

He took a huge pay cut to become press secretary, and I hope he recoups his losses with book deals and talking head gigs.

Thanks, Tony, for a job well done.

I may be wrong, but I believe that ALL federal employees have their choices from the same group of health plans.

True, maybe I should have used the word "eligible for" the same coverage. But that is a far cry from the silly post that his coverage was expiring and etc. WE have a shortage of common sense here at time, I mean how long has Tim Johnson been in the hospital now?

he is actually right there with Bush on open borders and amnesty.

I have no evidence to the contrary, but do you have any links from Tony that demonstrate this, dating BEFORE he went to work at the White House?

About as long as I have been in the last two years, counting rehabilitative care. I have been making it on a Medicare HMO.

Is it me, sl, or are there a lot of snarky comments on this thread? You’re a nicer person than I am, I’ll trust your take on it.

Perfect.

Just like the Founders intended.

You enter public service, do your duty and leave.

Unlike those fossils in the Senate and House (and career bureaucrats in every level of govt).

Even federal govt, health insurance does not likely cover experimental treatments.

Good post. I am thinking the same thing. When I saw him recently, he did not look well. He doesn’t have time to deal with the nitwits at the WH press conferences. He needs to take care of himself and his family’s financial future.

Can’t blame him for that.

God Bless you, Tony.

Just got hit with $500 worth of medical bills myself...for this week! More coming next week. This is after insurance.

I believe Snow. Cancer is not only insidious, it's an expensive enemy to fight. Further, if it's at an aggressive stage, he's probably looking at the long term - like I am. He's got to earn as much as he can now, and secure those assets, to ensure there's enough to sustain his family after he is gone. That means increasing your earnings immediately while you still have the strength to work.

Yes, the long term.......and alternative costs can really hit you in the wallet. We’ve spent between $5,000-$6,000 over the last two years. That is with insurance.
