BOYNTON BEACH — What started as a traffic stop on a gold Nissan Sentra early this morning led to the discovery of two pipe bombs, masks and gloves and 15-feet of PVC pipe inside the car.
Boynton Beach police have detained the four men who were inside the car when Officer Vincent Haugh stopped it in on North Federal Highway around 2:24 a.m.

Haugh stopped the car after he saw one of the men throw something out a window. When he approached the vehicle and asked for identification, none of the occupants had any to provide.
The men were asked to step out of the car.
As they did, Haugh noticed what looked like two pipe bombs on the floorboard.
The devices were about the size of a fist. Each was wrapped in duct tape and had a fuse.
Police also found masks and gloves.
In the trunk of the car they discovered about 15-feet of PVC pipe.

One of the suspects told investigators they had been making pipe bombs, police said. Their motive was not known.

Throwing stuff out the car window could be stupid, yes; or it could be a good way to get a cop to stop you at 2:30 in the morning.

According to someone on an earlier thread here, PVC is used because the resulting bomb can go through x-rays without detection. They then apparently pack the explosives in something that can also go through x-ray machines (not the usual nails and metal shrapnel, in other words).
It probably wouldn’t do a lot of damage relative to other types of bombs, but I’m sure it would be pretty bad in an airplane cabin or even the baggage hold.
Retract that. It now appears they were just some overgrown boys who like to make things go boom. NTTAWWT. Just don’t combine it with driving around in the middle of the night, littering the landscape and annoying the bears.
Good grief. How can anyone be so dumb, especially coming after last week's news about the guys in SC. Except these idiots probably don't even follow the news. It's beyond their reading level.
