...and when it happens all our police and national guard will be dispatched to surround and protect the countries mosques from retailiation.

That’s nice too.

“And these terrorists would be unbelieveably lucky to engineer a 12-18 kT explosion - 0.5-1.0 kT is much more like it.”

That’s presuming they don’t get their hands on one of the dozens of missing weapons mentioned in the articles.

A small Soviet fusion weapon is in the 1 MT range.

My nightmare scenario doesn’t involve carrying things over the border on foot. It involves a cargo ship pulling into a busy port, with a Navy base (say, San Diego)...and suddenly the cargo ship is replaced by a 1+ MT fireball.

That would be a bad day.

What we're all forgetting is that nukes have a shelf life, after which they go stale, like an old sandwich.

I think the actual “suitcase bombs” that the SU had were larger than footlockers.

Correct. Two footlockers actually. One for the core and one for the trigger.

Then a fate worse than death occurs. Geraldo Rivera shows up.

My 300 Weatherby benchrest rifle shoots minute of Rivera at 1000 yards! ;^)

He pointed the finger squarely at

Might as well place blame now. Once it happens we'll be too busy panicking, and this time it won't be a three day affair like WTC911, but more like a week.

Knowing this, are you prepared? Can you and your family ride out the frighteningly unpredictable weeks or months following the loss of an American city and its inhabitants? If you are not in the city hit, can you survive?

In order: Yes, yes, and yes.

That said, I’m not buying the ‘thousands of nukes floating around’ assertion. At all.

I'm not worried. We have FEMA to save us. Remember the fabulous job they did in Mississippi and Louisiana during Hurricane Katrina. /sarcasm

Be afraid, be very afraid.

The media and government never told the people all that went on after Andrew.

OK, sir. Well, why then, don't you fill us in?

“”Lucifer’s Hammer” by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle is a good blueprint for what might happen. It’s about a comet hitting the Earth, but the human behavior described in the aftermath is exactly what we will see after a nuclear attack.”

Have you read “Alas, Babylon”? Many Florida high schoolers read it. Amazon has over 250 reviews of the book. Another recent catclysmic book and Pulitzer prize winner,”The Road”, is even more disturbing.

...Scaremongering by a clueless asshat....

Don’t be so sure. I had a close relative that worked on Capitol Hill until recently and he said the same thing. He believes this will happen so much, that he moved his family from the DC area to a small Midwestern town.”

Good post....sobering. It’s naive to think of such a threat as “scaremongering”.

Being a New Yorker and in the belly of the terrorist target beast so to speak, why is it so difficult for you to assimilate all of the intelligence and information out there? The financial district on a crowded day along with DC is ground zero for the Islamics. How many more times do you need to hear “its not a matter of if, but when” from the mouths who make their living in intelligence and triangulating this stuff until this sinks in? I know its hard to accept especially when you make your living in the NYC, have your home 17 miles away (5 towns?) and would be ruined “when” it happens. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

If I happen to be a block away when a dirty bomb is detonated and I'm gone, I knew the risks and I took my chances.

But I know such an event will not bring the United States to its knees. I was in the crowd of people evacuating over the 59th Street Bridge on 9/11 and there was order, and a police presence and mutual helpfulness and support among New Yorkers.

If 9/11 couldn't erase the rule of law and the humanity of my fellow citizens, then another attack couldn't either.
