Sometimes we can better understand where we are politically from afar than from within. Consider this assessment from Europe's biggest and Germany's most influential magazine, Der Spiegel, this week:
"The wind has shifted in Washington. America, not just its president, is at war. The Democrats are still critical of the failed Iraq campaign, but they are no longer opposed to the "War on Terror" in general. It has been accepted, and not just as a metaphor Ninety-two percent of Americans are opposed to an immediate withdrawal from Iraq, and a majority doesn't want to see the U.S.'s special detention camp at Guantanamo Bay closed. At the moment, the American electorate's biggest criticism of Bush is that he has not been aggressive enough in pursuing terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.
"Indeed, when voters hit the ballot box in November 2008, they will be looking for more than just a candidate charismatic and clever enough to lead the country politically. They will also ask themselves which of the candidates is sufficiently tough, crafty and brutal to win the multi-front war that the Bush administration has begun.
"Many Americans now despise Bush [because of Iraq]. Nevertheless, Americans are still loath to admit defeat. This is precisely what distinguishes Europeans from Americans. The Americans favor the power of force, even in its crudest form, which explains why the U.S. military might is so superior to that of all other nations." (By Gabor Steingart. Translated from the German by Christopher Sultan)

Re: “The Republicans should ceaselessly remind Americans of the cowardice displayed by the Democrats.”
That’s a great idea!
But first -
the current Republicans must get a backbone!
When have the Republicans ever had a backbone? The MSM slanders
the Republicans at every turn and emphasizes every outspoken word
from the Democrats against the (R)..
Even Fox has the Dems on cable 24/7 for every word they say.
The Media won't decide our leaders until a Repub screws up.
Then it's all over. Macaca.
/BAH!
The Americans favor the power of force,
The silly self-serving “analysis” of the writer who disdains the “crude American power” infers that the European penchant for endless ineffectual “talks” is so much more enlightened than actually standing ones ground and being prepared to fight for what one believes in. How truly enlightened and “progressive”. Leftist fantasies are just sooooo cool.
“The Americans favor the power of force, even in its crudest form, which explains why the U.S. military might is so superior to that of all other nations.”
As opposed to ... what? The author should be asked to provide examples of the European alternative and its successes. American force has largely been applied to save European nations when their diplomatic strategy has failed miserably. Furthermore, the US has yet to produce an Anerican equivalent of Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin or Napoleon.
I totally agree. All videos and print pictures of RATS should be overcast with yellow and all RAT names (except for Lieberman) that are mentioned should be written in yellow.
Free Republic has many graphic artists who could get to work on this idea and - as with the "Soreloserman" campaign, be the first kid on the block to accurately depict the essence of what it means to be a 'RAT.
In war - the enemy sets the rules. We all know that Hillary has always followed her mentor, activist Marxist Saul Alinsky's advice to pick your target, freeze it, and destroy it (politically).
Our target is Hillary - the 'RAT nominee for President. All pictures and videos of her should be in yellow. Ditto her name in print.
It might even be a good idea to teach all FReepers (me included) how to do the HTML needed to get a bold yellow color when they type the name of any 'RAT (including when they type the words, "DemocRAT Party"), here.
Whatdya say? bttt
In addition to the color yellow being used to accurately depict all ‘RATS, slogans like, “Americans don’t relate to cowards”; Americans don’t relate to losers”, should accompany all references to ‘RATS and their degenerate Party. bttt
A hearty Amen to that!
Rather be feared on my feet than admired on my knees.
Here is the html.
<font size='20' face='Arial' color='YELLOW'><b>DEMOCRATS</b></font>
I'm working on it, babe!
Democrats cannot EVER be trusted with national security, period.
They proved it in Vietnam... and while they had a generation and a half of younger folks who didn’t see their cowardice first hand who might have been willing to believe otherwise... they have once again shown exactly WHY they can and never should be trusted with national security EVER.
Just as those memories were fading, they showed the truth to a whole new generation once again.
DEMOCRATS NEVER CAN BE TRUSTED WITH NATIONAL SECURITY, PERIOD.
They lack the will, the honesty and the testicular fortitude to EVER do what is right for this nation on that topic.
"The wind has shifted in Washington... The Democrats are still critical of the failed Iraq campaign, but they are no longer opposed to the "War on Terror" in general. What this article is telling us (from Germany?) is that the Dems are now beyond the 2007 Murtha Mania and their candidates and shills and will spend from now until November '08 in their FDR/JFK disguises.
(I'd presume that Big Al will continue to haul coals for the eco-fringe so they don't get their feelings hurt).
Our task are not to prove them cowards but to prove them insincere and inadequate to lead in a war that they now concede will continue into the next administration and possibly beyond.
So far Obama is helping us out in advance, and for that: Thanks Hussein.
Boy, you nailed it!
Hey! Thanks a million! Now we just need to find a way to make it stand out. It’s too pale against a white background. Got any ideas?
Hillary Clinton is all three rolled up into one.
"Iraq is lost"
