Prayer Request - Gravely Injured Marine Sergeant [Update at Post 439]

The family of U.S. Marine Sgt. Samuel Nichols is urgently requesting prayer support as they surround Sam, age 23, at Bethesda Naval Hospital. He is in a coma after having suffered a brain injury due to an IED on a mined road in Iraq. The explosion killed three of his men.
Sgt. Nichols was so gravely injured that when he arrived at Bethesda last week, doctors initially held out little hope; but his family began praying immediately and are seeing improvements and hopeful signs this week.
Sgt Nichols' family are believing Christians who are in prayer constantly over him, believing in the Word of God and His promises. Many offers of prayer have reached them; that being the case, all of you who want to join this thread will be a part of a widespread prayer covering for this young man, his loving wife, Erin, his parents and extended family.
He is considered a top-notch Marine. The very name Samuel Nichols is the same as the first Commander of the Marine Corps. This was his third deployment to Iraq. One of his former commanders who is now in DC has stopped by to look in on him. Also last week, a Lieutenant General who is second in command of the Marine Corps came by to award the Purple Heart.
A friend of a friend of his family contacted a member of the DC Chapter whose son had undergone a miraculous recovery from a coma. She forwarded this request to us FReepers for prayer support for Sgt. Nichols, having experienced first-hand the awesome prayer energy that surrounded her son as he fought back to recovery.
"For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."

Is it possible to get a mailing address for Sam Nichols? The family is grateful for the kind thoughts of so many, but would prefer not to receive cards, flowers, etc at this time. The patient is in ultra-sterile conditions in ICU. However, the family all see this thread, whether at home or in the hospital. Your best way to send greetings is to post them here.

Your contributions so completely illustrate the “Semper Fidelis” of the Marine Corps. Not only are the heroic men such as your husband willing to lay down their lives, but women such as yourself lay aside your grief to pray for another Marine and his wife as he struggles to recover. Christ himself must be touched by your generous spirit. God’s blessings to you and your children always.

Daddy, thank you for this tool, the internet, which lets us, the different parts of Your Body, see what Your Spirit is doing. Thank you for the unity of the Spirit who was given to us thru Jesus and in His name, thru the Spirit, I lift up this sergeant both physically and spiritually. Sustain his faith and sustain his body; please grant him healing as only You are able to do. Thank you for the great news about the breathing tube; please let his recovery continue to be quick. Thank you for the support this family has seen. Please continue to sustain his family;please give them the faith and the strength to endure this trial. Daddy, we may not know the Why but we know the Who and I ask that You be glorified in this situation. I ask all this in the name of the Messiah Who reconciled us to You by His death. Amen!

Sgt. Nichols Update 4: Sept. 7, 2007: Eyes Open!
Dear FRiends,
Please forgive me for the long wait for news while I dealt with some preoccupying family events. The news is positive and hopeful! Sgt. Nichols is still in a coma, but now he opens his eyes, and shows subtle signs of wakeful periods during the day. He makes little movements and small responses to discomfort and the voices of family members.
Praise God!
His devoted wife Erin stays with him twelve hours a day, working alongside the Navy nurses to keep Sam's airway clear and provide constant TLC. The hospital provides someone to keep individual watch during the nights. Erin has been an extraordinary source of good cheer and playful banter aimed at Sam. Their many family members have been flying in from California to keep him surrounded.
Sam will shortly be transferred to a military rehabilitation center in California. His stay at Bethesda Naval Hospital has focused on his physical injuries that have been surgically treated and are in stages of recovery. The facility in California is not only nearer to his family, but will also provide more focused brain therapy.
I'm going to ask you to pray in a special way for Sam
today, and in the coming days.
First, a little explanation:
Many of you have heard Almighty God referred to in word and song as "The Great I AM." Jehovah (Yahweh), the name of God in the Old Testament, is the Hebrew for "I AM" (Exodus 3:14). Jesus Christ repeats this statement of His eternal nature, "I am," throughout the New Testament books of John and Revelation.
"I AM" is a present-tense statement of the identity we share as followers created in the image of The Great I AM, that is eternal, outside of time. As babies, we know little except the present moment, "I am (hungry, thirsty, lonely, happy...)". We cry or gesture, and a caregiver appears to supply our needs, affirming the eternal nature of I AM Love.
As Sam recovers, he will again learn by baby steps to focus, speak, walk all the voluntary expressions of free will surrounded by caretakers to love him. Let us support him now by praying as his representatives to The Great I AM.
First, you may want to view a short video of Sam here, to form a mental picture of him.
Next, let's picture Sam in our minds as we pray the following affirmations,
all based in the Bible:
Jehovah God,
I am Your child.
I am created by You for Your purposes.
I am known by You in every fiber of my being.
I am healed; YOU ARE healing me now.
I am alive in You.
I am loved.
I am Love.
I am protected by the full armor of God.
YOU ARE my sword and shield.
I am victorious over sin and death.
I am set free from the powers of darkness.
I am never abandoned.
I AM in the Light, as YOU ARE in the Light.
I can do all things through Christ, my Savior.
Amen!
Hallelujah!
For additional study:
This excerpt from the Roman Catholic Catechism gives more theological explanation of the "I AM":
God Reveals His Name.
These pages of Bible study by evangelist Robert Nguyen Cramer are textual analysis and bibliography:
"The 'I AM' sayings of Jesus"
"Soul: A personal self? or the divine 'I AM'?
