One of my four brothers graduated from the University of Iowa, but being an African American male, I don't think I want to spend too much time in the Hawkeye State. Only about 2 percent of Iowa's population is African American, but blacks are 13.6 times more likely than whites to be imprisoned there. That's more than twice the national average, which is bad enough

Without those unreported crimes, a black make is 10-15 times more likely to commit a robbery with an injured victim than a white male explaining the disparity in prison populations. (Liberal crybabies, don’t make me look this up for you again). The actual multiples would be higher.
He goes on to explain that these are mostly dealers, so they are not exactly victims, are they.
But then, what about the 60% who are incarcerated for crimes other than drug offenses? Guess we don't want to talk about the violent thugs, do we.
Straw Man Alert!
In 1900 the murder rate may have been close to 1 per 100,000 but probably not since records were just being standardized. Many murders were listed as accidental deaths. At any rate by 1910 they were at 4.6 per 100,000 on a nearly straight line climb to a high of 9.5 in 1934.
Murder in nineteenth and early twenteth century often drew light sentences, rarely death. Punishment was swift, sure and short.
“In NYC, for all practical purposes the average citizen who is not either rich, somehow connected to a high ranking politician, or a celebrity can not obtain a permit to legally possess a handgun even in his/her home, and it is very difficult for him/her to legally possess a shotgun or rifle.”
I live in New York, and have for most of life.
I own a Charter Arms .44 revolver, a Browning Hi-Power 9mm pistol, A Mossberg 835 shotgun, and a Marlin 336 rifle.
I’m certainly not rich, at least not Mayor Bloomberg rich.
I don’t know any high-ranking politicians.
I ain’t a celebrity.
Oh, and all four of them guns are right here in my house. With permits and everything. Go figure!
Owning guns in New York City is not difficult; keeping up with the ever-changing requirements of continued legal ownership, is. However, if you belong to a good gun club (I do), you get all the information (and help!) you need to keep your weapons legal. And, of course, the NRA can help you anytime. Just call ‘em.
The vast majority of permit applications denied in NYC are rejected because the applicant typically did something stupid. Simply making a mistake and crossing it out, failure to write clearly and neatly (making the application invalid because it is ‘not-legible’), placing a mark in the wrong box, extraneous pencil/pen marks on the application, and a lot of chickensh*t about spelling errors will get your app kicked. I would say that 95% of rejections are because of application ‘errors’ that range from the assinine to the anal-retentive.
The last major round of unrenewed permits (late 90’s) were kicked simply because the city stopped accepting mail-in renewals. You were required to make a personal appearance at One Police Plaza to a certain office, which was open one day a week, for three hours a day, on a rotating basis. A lot of folks didn’t know that mail-in wasn’t valid anymore, and worse, didn’t bother to find out beforehand. Until they got the rejection letter, most had no idea.
While the city doesn’t make it impossible to own a weapon, it does make it incredibly inconvenient, time consuming, repetitious and a glacially-slow process, and then makes it just as difficult to continue comply with the regulations. By being prepared and informed, though, you can overcome these hurdles.
very thoughtful post.
I think you are emphasizing the wrong word. Look again.
The racists among us, blatant and closeted, will be quick to attribute the imprisonment disparity to the misguided belief that African Americans are inherently prone to criminality. I've seen no valid studies supporting that view.
As far as I know, there aren't any studies that say black people are just born more criminally inclined than others. The author is trying to squirm around the "born that way" ridiculousness that no one I know suscribes to and the fact that blacks do, in general, seem to commit more crimes, or crimes more often than other races of people.
Its more socialist propaganda....some people spout it so much and so often they really believe it.
Yeah, Gilbert did seem to get Beaver in more trouble byt look how Whitey turned out
Stanley Fafara enjoyed six years on the sitcom, and after the cancelation of "Leave It To Beaver" in 1963, Stanley attended North Hollywood High School. While there, he developed a liking for alcohol and soon learned how to use his fame to best advantage. He became friendly with the pop-rock band Paul Revere and the Raiders and reportedly moved in with the band for a time. He discovered hard drugs in the mid 1960s, an unfortunate obsession that would dog him for many years to come. For a while, at his parent's insistance, he attempted living with his sister in Jamica, where he tried his hand at painting. But he couldn't abstain from his drug use. He then returned to Los Angeles at age 22, where he married briefly. Then to support himself he started dealing illegal drugs. Even worse, later he was convicted of breaking into pharmacies and sentenced to a year in jail. After being incarcerated, Stanley tried his hand at being a roofer, waiter and janitor before descending back into drug use, particularly heroin. He was in-and-out of rehab centers for many years, eventually getting sober in 1995 but not before contracting hepatitis C. At the time of his death he had been housed in a single-room occupancy building in Portland's skid row, living off his Social Security disability check of $475.00 per month.
Since you have personal experience with NYC gun laws I will gladly defer to your superior knowledge on th matter.
I got most of my info in re obtaining NYC gun permits from a former resident who lived in the city during Rudy's tenure as mayor, so it may not be correct in all the details. I was simply trying to make the point that the city authorities discourage private gun ownership as much as possible under NYC regulations, and use various subterfuges and what I consider to be "dirty tricks" to accomplish their purpose. My son encountered some of the same type obstacles when he applied for a permit to buy a handgun in St. Louis county several years ago.
My source told me that if you miss or come in late for your appointment for an interview with an agent of the issuing authority you have to go back and start the application process all over again from step one, including a steep application fee. As I said before, that may or may not be true in all or any cases. I can't personally vouch for any of that NYC portion of the post, but that's what I was told.
My source was never able to complete the process and get his permit before he moved away, but that may have been as much his fault as the city's. I simply don't know the NYC system from experience because I have never lived any closer to the city than Palmyra in the finger lakes region, and that was many years ago.
As obvious as it should be, prison keeps criminals from committing crimes.
Most of the stats in my post were found HERE.
Some of his stats are not found in the charts he presents but are written into the text of the article. His references to authoritative sources would seem to validate his data if they are authentic sources, but I haven't personally researched any of it and probably couldn't if I tried.
Never mind that blacks are 30 times more likely to COMMIT crimes than whites in Iowa.
Lies, damned lies, and statistics.
Excellent analysis. This is also a classical example of confusing who the real victims are. They are not blacks who commit crimes. They are the blacks who are beaten, robbed, raped and killed by black crimminals. The author refuses to acknowledge that black crimminals are monsters, not victims. Talk about misplaced priorities. Just typical bleeding heart, victimhood BS.
This guys entire argument is that the system is inherently racist, and there is no study that Blacks are more inherently criminal, but then in the next study says blacks are disproportionately poor and studies have shown that poverty is linked to crime....
This sort of disproves his assertions that blacks are in prison because the system is racist. They are in jail because they are criminals... they are committing more of the crimes. Now to say its simply because they are poor is nonsense. As long as blacks embrace the urban failed "culture" in large numbers, continue to embrace a "culture" that worships violence, misogyny and hedonism, while abhoring education, work, achievement, monogomy, fatherhood and marriage they will continue to be committing disproportionate numbers of crimes.
I'm tired of hearing the racist card. Black women, you are the last chance your race has of recovering from a death spiral that is destroying too many. Get some self respect, keep your legs shut, and demand the men you deal with be MEN, not boys (regardless of their age). Until you ladies expect more than being someones "baby's momma" nothing will change. If he won't marry you, doesn't have a job, has no desire to improve his condition and yours, he's not worthy of your time, let alone your sexual favors.
You are correct. There is an alternative to prisons.
Work gangs on hiways and other state properties are a good solution.
Just because one group still talks about 1964 doesn't mean they were the only ones targeted. I know very little about you - but I am certain I know much more about that program than you do. Your information in incorrect.
You’re so right. Don’t commit the crime and you don’t have to do the time. And, going to jail is an excellent way to become poor. Nothing like a felony criminal record to reduce job opportunities. Seems like it would be kind of obvious.
Whether you are black, white, yellow, brown, or green... as long as you allow yourself to accept narcotic welfare from the Liberal Plantation owners, then crime is always a logical side job, i.e. career choice.
It’s pathetic what narcotic welfare does to a person’s dignity. And it’s pathetic what the Democratic Party will do for a vote. Did you see them at the CNN debate the other night? They could give away free stuff fast enough!
How about simple statistics? Blacks commit 70% of violent crimes. That hasn't changed much over the last several years.
