Pit Bulls and Stupid Fools

Our dogs were more like comedians than commandos. They showed zero unwarranted aggression towards people and pooches. They had amazing discernment, insane athletic ability and undaunted courage. This breed impacted me so much I wrote a book about their magnificent spirit (go to amazon.com The Bulldog Attitude).

As far as I’m concerned, the Pit Bull is one of the most awesome animals on the planet. And before hype hit the fan, and the local news needed fresh chum for the gullible ones and the pimps and thugs became the owners of this noble animal, The United States of America thought so as well.

A harness on a pit? I haven’t seen that yet. That’s about stupid. A dog like that needs a choke collar with spikes...ON THE INSIDE OF THE COLLAR.

They showed zero unwarranted aggression

Sorry, one person's "warranted aggression" is someone else's bad day. Look, dogs have personalities, as do all animals. There are good laid-back ones, and bad ones. However, as a breed Pit Bulls were born to fight (locking jaws) and are extra territorial. Yes, the environment they are raised in makes a big difference, but they will always be themselves. I could raise an elephant but it would still be an elephant.

IMHO It's just not a good breed choice for a family. That doesn't mean there are not good ones, but look at the stories of them turning on kids and even their masters. If you have a good kind Pit Bull, God Bless you. But please don't say they are all gentle. For that matter, neither are Daschounds, the little ratters ;)

I have found most people who own chihuahuas require high emotional maintenence and live vicariously through their mutant dog...look at Paris Hilton and see if it ain’t so...

You left out Rottweilers.

How convenient.

When large breeds attack, they are much more likely to injure, maim, or kill. Especially when the victims are small children.

That said, I don’t think all large breeds are equally dangerous. But if all large breed dogs were eliminated, dog attacks resulting in fatalities would drop to nearly zero. The stats on fatal dog attacks back up this assertion.

Hardly.

There are some cretins who want large aggressive dogs. If they were "eliminated"(?), these same cretins would breed/train new ones.

I live and grew up in Miami. The reason why Pitbulls are banned in Miami-Dade is because years ago, back in the 80’s I believe, there was a rash of pitbull attacks on people. Mind you, this was back in the 80’s, (Miami-Vice, Cocaine Cowboys etc..) Many people had them for fighting and breeding/training them to be as aggressive as possible. The commissioners got together and passed laws to ban them. If you are caught with a pitbull today you will be fined $500.00 a day until you get rid of it. As far as I know, this is the only place where this is law. I had a pitbull/beagle mix and can honestly say that he was the smartest and kindest dog I have even known. (( Snoopy, I miss you!))

I do not normally believe statistics, and I love all dogs - but in my almost 60 years I have personally known of only *one* serious dog attack, which occurred about two years ago to a good friend who had her fingers bitten off by a dog

it was a Pit bull of course.

I'll stick with my six boxers, who have all the advantages of a Pit without the agressiveness - I fully trust my boxers would give their lives to protect my two young children, whereas I will not let my tykes near a Pit or visit anyone who has one.

I ran across an interesting account re:canine aggression some years ago. Seems some veterinarians wanted to determine which canine breed is the most aggressive. So they went backstage at dog shows to interact with the dogs : How the dogs responded to the attentions of strange humans determined the aggressiveness rating. They thought purebred dogs would be the most "reliable" indicators of innate traits, and pedigreed show quality dogs would be best of all.

They would stand outside the dog's portable pens and carriers to see how dogs reacted to their proximity. The vets decided based on their survey that the LEAST aggressive dog is the cocker spaniel : All members of this breed responded to strange humans paying attention to them by posing and acting adorable.

All the breeds with origins in what is now Germany were markedly more aggressive than breeds originated in (eg) the UK or elsewhere. However, in 75% of the cases the breeds (German Shepherds, the inaccurately named Great Dane-which is actually the Deutsch Dogge, or German dog, the Rottweiller, Doberman, etc) responded with fear/aggression (hiding in their carrier or dog house) rather than with anger/aggression.

But one German breed was an exception : One German breed responded 100% to human attention with anger/aggression; growling, snarling, hurling themselves on the bars of their cages and biting at them in a froth lipped rage...Which breed?

The adorable, cuddly looking little dachshund. Seems to the wiener dog, everything in the world is an enemy-perhaps a giant rabid badger in their eyes-for them to conquer .

The details are in a book called Pets and Their People by Bruce Fogle DVM, which is out of print but should be easy to track down if anyone's interested.

Yes, that's a good common-sense approach. And it insults the owner. The more ostracized they are the better.

At least up until the point that they sic their dog on you.

“Bigger Vick” has nothing to do with it. My own observations after having owned one for 13+ yrs is that they are intelligent, loving dogs if raised right. She was housebroken almost immediately and never caused any problems at all in all of those years.

The truth is, these dogs are a huge gamble.

The media ignores cases of people being mauled and killed by these beasts, being as frequent and noteworthy as a fender bender at the mall. Couple divorces, news at eleven.
Dog mauls man, dog kills child. Oh, those evil people. Next

It is one more indignity, one more erosion of civility, one
more little aspect of this degrading quality of life in America, and I could not be more opposed to it.

I do not care about the pathetic liberal wailing that insists the evil is men, well this dog is the result of men with evil intent, and should not be trusted, and I will never accept it.

I hope the next child to die because of some thug’s cowardice will capture the public’s attention, there
is real evil here, right there walking on that sidewalk.

I am hopeful that it will result in communities across the US deciding they do not need to take a chance with these animals, and most of all, people like Vick.

You want to take this country, this culture back from thugs, punks and drugs?
This is a very good place to start.

Criminalize this beast, criminalize the people who own them.

Humans created this mess, humans need to fix it.

I still remember the little weiner dog who bit my ankle, snarling, growling... as my friend picked it up to see if HE had been hurt! LOL They were bred to go down holes/tunnels in the ground and fight whatever was there. They are cute, but can be aggressive.

My friend has one who bit her on the face when she tried to remove him from HER bed. It seems that hubby is #1, the DOG is #2, and my friend is the lowly # 3. Of course some of that bad behavior is from upbringing. If my dog bit me he’d really be taught a lesson as to who is the Alpha! LOL

I don’t care how nice and gentle they seem to be, they are completely unpredictable. There was a lady who lived north of Houston who had 4 or 5 pit bulls for years and lovingly called them her “babies”. One day she was found dead. Her “babies” had attacked and killed her. I think the breed should be outlawed. Period.

So you know I am not just picking on pit bulls, chows are the same way. They can seem to be fine and then attack out of the blue. Granted, this can happen in other breeds on occasion, but it is a breed characteristic of chows and pit bulls.

Not to mention that the “media” consistently mis-identifies pit bulls.

At one point in my life, I had three wiener dogs. Now I’m down to one 11 year old longhair female. When she goes, I’m getting a dachshund puppy-I haven’t been dachshundless since 1988, and I don’t think I can be without one. They’re sweet , gentle dogs in general-but if one gets angry, they turn practically psychotic! But they’re so cute, they get away with it.

Border collies are bred to herd sheep--they are amazing, almost supernatural --it's remarkable what generations of breeding can accomplish. Properly trained, they can be instructed to cut out a particular sheep from a herd and trot him over to the shepherd. If you go jogging with a border, he'll try to "herd" you away from traffic.

Pit bulls were bred to fight in pits to entertain cretins. Maybe a dog will never show evidence of a hundred and fifty years of selecting out for aggression and bloodthirst--but I don't want a breed like that bumping me with his nose. Please keep him safely leashed at all times so he won't get shot.

I remember a case on the Eastern Shore of Maryland when I lived there. Two pits were unconfined in the back of a pickup truck...and a child walked by. They jumped out, mutiliated him and killed him. Then they calmly jumped back in the truck to cheerfully await their cretin of an owner.

"They never hurt anybody before." Before shooting the dogs, maybe the owner should be fed to them.

They were bred for a purpose. The purpose they now serve is to frighten people. Most pit owners I have encountered love to laugh at how people show fright..."He'll just lick you to death..."
