Bush: Americans will realize need for aliens

President Bush yesterday said Americans will soon realize they need the immigrants and foreign temporary workers that would have been allowed by his immigration bill, which was defeated in the Senate last month.

Mr. Bush, in a town hall session in Nashville, Tenn., also refused to say whether he will pardon two U.S. Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a fleeing drug-smuggling suspect, saying the prosecutor was a friend of his who made his case to the jury that convicted the agents.

If Mr. Bush was hoping the immigration issue would disappear after his bill's failure, those hopes were dashed, as he was asked repeatedly about border security during the forum — meant to highlight his commitment to cutting the deficit.

"The bill failed and I can't make a prediction to you at this point, sir, where it's going to head," the president told one questioner. "I can make you a prediction, though, that pretty shortly people are going to be knocking on people's doors saying, man, we're running out of workers."

Mr. Bush said there are workers who will do jobs Americans aren't doing in the agriculture sector in particular, and without them the jobs will go unfilled.

All farm labor in this country was Americans until around a decade ago? What rock have you been living under? I worked farm labor, along side illegal immigrants around 30 years ago. I also know of farmers and ranchers who’ve hired migrant farm workers for more than 50 years. Perhaps some education in this area is in order.

This is one of the worst ones, and it's not like it's really quantifiable. Our construction workers - who were mainly American until recent years - knew they had to "behave," but even when they didn't, I was never scared for my life. The leers and simmering hostility I face from the landscapers and construction workers and "day laborers" when I encounter them, it's not amusing.

In the non-tourist areas of Mexico, if you go into a bar, you are considered a hooker and will be mangled. There are rape trees continually found out here in the desert. Their (in general, of course it's not EVERY single one) lack of respect for women is revolting.

I wasn’t talking specifically about the farms in that sentence. I was talking generalities - how we were doing all these jobs that the whiners like Bush and his worshippers here are saying we can’t or won’t do. How did we ever survive without the 20 - 35 million illegal aliens? I guess there are some here who think we can’t. We are now a nation of wimps, as per some here.

Many of the migrants we had prior to ten years ago had proper work papers. Very few illegal aliens are in ag anymore anyway - I’ve seen stats as low as 2 or 3%. They have moved on to the good, construction jobs.

First, build a wall and plug the leak.

Second cut the illegals off from EVERY single social service except EMERGENCY medical. This would also require a re-interpretation of the anchor baby issue by either the Congress or the USSC.

Third, ramp up the workplace raids, not just arresting the illegals but also the employers.

Many millions will deport themselves. The ones that are left? Maybe you make a deal with them in some way, but they STILL have to go home first.

Thanks for that link. This does strongly support getting our borders secure. It does not support the idea that most illegals who come across the border are committing more serious crimes after coming here. IMO we should deport these criminals back to their country of origin and make sure our borders are secure so they cannot come back.

Yes, I have. Not exactly wishing, but thinking that a President Kerry would have done less harm than a second term for President Bush. At least we would still have a Republican Congress, and the public would have been fed up with a Democratic president, instead of being fed up with a Republican president.
