Sex Ed for Kindergarteners 'Right Thing to Do,' Says Obama
ABC News ^ | July 18, 2007 1:13 PM | Teddy Davis and Lindsey Ellerson

ABC News' Teddy Davis and Lindsey Ellerson Report: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., told Planned Parenthood Tuesday that sex education for kindergarteners, as long as it is "age-appropriate," is "the right thing to do."

"I remember Alan Keyes . . . I remember him using this in his campaign against me," Obama said in reference to the conservative firebrand who ran against him for the U.S. Senate in 2004. Sex education for kindergarteners had become an issue in his race against Keyes because of Obama’s work on the issue as chairman of the health committee in the Illinois state Senate.

"'Barack Obama supports teaching sex education to kindergarteners,'" said Obama mimicking Keyes' distinctive style of speech. "Which -- I didn’t know what to tell him (laughter)."

"But it’s the right thing to do," Obama continued, "to provide age-appropriate sex education, science-based sex education in schools."

Speaking to a young woman who asked a question about sex education, Obama said, "You, as a peer, can have enormous power over your age cohort but you’ve got to have some support from the schools. You certainly should not have to be fighting each and every instance by providing accurate information outside of the classroom because inside the classroom the only thing that can be talked about is abstinence."

"Keep in mind: I honor and respect young people who choose to delay sexual activity," Obama continued. "I’ve got two daughters, and I want them to understand that sex is not something casual. That's something that we definitely want to communicate and should be part of any curriculum. But we also know that when the statistics tell us that nearly half of 15 to 19 year olds are engaging in sexual activity, that for us to leave them in ignorance is potentially consigning them to illness, pregnancy, poverty, and in some cases, death."

When Obama's campaign was asked by ABC News to explain what kind of sex education Obama considers "age appropriate" for kindergarteners, the Obama campaign pointed to an Oct. 6, 2004 story from the Daily Herald in which Obama had "moved to clarify" in his Senate campaign that he "does not support teaching explicit sex education to children in kindergarten. . . The legislation in question was a state Senate measure last year that aimed to update Illinois' sex education standards with 'medically accurate' information . . . 'Nobody's suggesting that kindergartners are going to be getting information about sex in the way that we think about it,' Obama said. 'If they ask a teacher 'where do babies come from,' that providing information that the fact is that it's not a stork is probably not an unhealthy thing. Although again, that's going to be determined on a case by case basis by local communities and local school boards.'"

In addition to local schools informing kindergarteners that babies do not come from the stork, the state legislation Obama supported in Illinois, which contained an "opt out" provision for parents, also envisioned teaching kindergarteners about "inappropriate touching," according to Obama's presidential campaign. Despite Obama's support, the legislation was not enacted.

Wilfrid Brimley offers us oatmeal as ‘the right thing to do.’

Obama and the Dems want to change it to a breakfast table discussion of genitalia.

There is no such thing as age appropriate sex education for kindergartners.

You said it. This is just unbelievable to me.

"I remember Alan Keyes . . ."

So do I. (Sigh.)

When my kids were in kindergarten, they had no concept about sex. They knew they came "from mommy's stomach" but they had no knowledge of or interest in how they got there. When the subject did come up later, my wife and I were perfectly capable of dealing with it within the context of our own experience and values.

I don't know which is worse: the shrill, strident statists who are very clear about wanting to shape us according to their will, or the smooth, calm "don't worry, we'll take care of everything" types like Obama. I'm thinking it's Obama, because his style works best on that "sucker born every minute." I don't know if it's arrogance on his part, or if he considers that since he managed to get enough people who were stupid enough to vote for him, that we all must be stupid; but I can assure him that good parents provide more than just the sperm and the egg and the tax money, and are perfectly capable of raising their childen without his assistance.

That's likely because most of the sex education that HAS been presented to the kids has been 'values neutral' and teachers are not telling them that early sexual activity can be not only dangerous to their health, but also their well-being. All they hear is that if you get pregnant, abortion is legal, and you have every right to get rid of the problem, so no worries.

I say the American Library Association will tell members to support Obama. The ALA says:
ALA affirms the right of youth to comprehensive, sex-related ... materials...; affirms the active role of librarians in providing such; and urges librarians and library educators to re-examine existing policies and practices and assume a leadership role in seeing that information is available for children and adolescents....
ALA Policy Manual §52.5.2

Obama claims he stands for “age appropriate” teaching. The ALA scoffs at the idea of “age appropriate” materials. The librarian organization has instituted a policy of providing all materials to anyone of any age and no prohibitions on the acquisition of pornographic/explicit materials.

The vice squad should consider investigating librarians for providing minors with adult materials. There are regular sting operations to bust people selling cigarettes and beer to those over 17.

Explaining sexual intercourse to kindergarteners - isn’t that like child porn?

Didn’t read your post. I see we’re thinking along the same line. These jack asses need to leave the little ones alone.

I'm not saying I agree with Obama and his nutty Kindergarten Sex-Ed plan -- I disagree vehemently with it.

But let me say in reply to:

Kindergartners aren’t even aware of sex.

Ah, no. I was aware of it in myself at that age. Knowing what the heck it was about, no. Mega perplexed, oh yes.

But this something for the parents to handle, not the state!

Kindergarten...why wait? Why not put some live video in the day care facilities and teach these little puppy-mill victims how to jump the little toddler next door.

It’s getting ridiculous. There is no reason to teach 5 yr olds, in school, about sex. I’ve answered all of my kids questions regarding sex, and I answer them explictly depending upon their age and maturity/development. Probably far more explicitly than any teacher would (we even had an incident at our catholic school about this, I sided with the teacher who answered the kids questions honestly and factually). My teens even tell me I’m too detailed with them, but hey, they ask and I answer.

We, as a society (and in public schools) are trying to sexualize these kids way too early. And I’m no prude about any of this stuff. I’m really starting to believe that it’s the liberal agenda so prevalent now in our schools and society that insists on teaching children, younger and younger, that any kind of sex is ok.

Our township/school district approved a health class curriculum that teaches 3rd graders about homosexual lifestyles. 3rd grade is way too young imo to teach this kind of stuff but it fits with the agenda. Now they want to start them at Kindergarten. High school didn’t work, those kids don’t buy what’s being sold to them, then it was middle school and they found those kids (that age) aren’t buying it either, so they decided to make it a part of the 3rd grade curriculum. Now they want it to start in Kindergarten.

My kids went/go to catholic grade school so they don’t get that in the early grades. We have a family course in 5th grade and they learn about sex, marriage, etc. And my kids ask me and I answer them way more explictly than any catholic grade school teacher would answer. I’m their mother, it’s my job to teach this stuff, not the school or government. My two teens attend the public high school and they see what’s being taught there about alternative lifestyles and they see it for what it is - indoctrination. They’re seeing how this ‘anything goes’ mentality (other than anything conservative or God sanctioned) is blatant in their education.

Most people don’t speak out, imo. Be it because they don’t want to appear conservative or prudish or racist or whatever other phobia is attached to anyone who doesn’t follow the liberal line of BS. I don’t care if anyone considers me prudish (far from it) or phobic or whatever. I talk openly with my kids about sex, when they ask. I’m probably more easygoing about it than they are. They see all this stuff on TV, the internet, in their lives (as teens) and they see how ok all of the perversions are - anything is ok as long as it makes “me” feel good, etc. Our society is encouraging that and it’s up to parents to teach them it’s not all ok.

So ITA with you.

This should certainly lock up the pedophile vote for Obama.

What have we come to when politicians are actual seeking to push sex upon kindergarteners?

Exactly. I don’t think these “adults” care a damn about these teens or their well being. It’s all about promoting the social programs and liberal agenda.

Why should there be any innocence in a child’s life?

The grade school in my upstairs spare bedroom hasn’t gotten into this yet. We also don’t take cues for what needs to be done from the govco schools either.

That’s what I like to see, a person who would be simply devastating for this nation but whom is running for President, shoot themselves in the foot! What an immoral and foolish statement to make. My goodness are there any moderate Democrats anymore? That seemed like something the RINO Julie Annie would say. You know all the other Democrats are thinking the same thing, but I believe they’re smarter than to expose their true intentions. This made my day!

Some should ask Shrillery! what her stance is on this issue. In chess, they would call it a fork, right?
