Hummer Owner Gets Angry Message
Washington Post ^ | July 18, 2007 | Allison Klein

Vandals Batter D.C. Man's SUV, Slash Its Tires and Scratch In an Eco Note

On a narrow, leafy street in Northwest Washington, where Prius hybrid cars and Volvos are the norm, one man bought a flashy gray Hummer that was too massive to fit in his garage. So he parked the seven-foot-tall behemoth on the street in front of his house and smiled politely when his eco-friendly neighbors looked on in disapproval at his "dream car."

It lasted five days on the street before two masked men took a bat to every window, a knife to each 38-inch tire and scratched into the body: "FOR THE ENVIRON."

"The thought of somebody vandalizing it never crossed my mind," said Gareth Groves...

Now, as Groves ponders what to do with the remains of his $38,000 SUV, he has been the target of a number of people who have driven by the crime scene in his upscale neighborhood and glared at him in smug satisfaction...

Neighbor Lucille Liem, 37, who owns a Prius hybrid, said that a common sentiment in the neighborhood is that large vehicles are impractical and a strain on the Earth -- and Hummers in particular are a symbol of consumer excess... Liem added quickly that she does not condone violence...

Investigators said they are searching for the vandals but don't have many leads. Witnesses saw two men about six feet tall with bandanas or masks over their faces smash up the car about 3:30 a.m. Monday and then run off...

He bought the used 2005 vehicle a month ago from a dentist in Fairfax County..."I'm worried about what I do now," he said. "If I get it fixed, do I put it back in the same spot three weeks from now?"

1963 ~ 1967 - IMHO the best looking Vettes ever. Particularly the roadsters.

I'd rank that generation second, First goes to the 1953-62 pocket rocket.

I never liked the swoopy lines of the '70s "stingray," and the Covettes since have been nice -- certainly can't fault the performance, especially at the price -- but I don't think they've ever matched the style of those early years.

“I’ve never understood people who buy brand new pickup trucks.”

Somebody has to buy them new. It’s just like all the people who say you should never buy a new car - do I have to point out that if everyone followed that advice their supply of good, used cars would soon dry up?

My father always told me to never buy a used car - all you’re doing is buying someone else’s problems.

Still, if you need a work truck, buying a used one that’s never been used for anything other than commuting is probably a good move - it’s what I’d probably do.

The next time I buy a new truck, I'll make sure I get the approved vehicle list from you first. ;-)

Jeez, it's gettin' to where a fella can't even have a mid-life crisis any more without watchin' his back...

you mean the CNW MArketing REsearch division? you’re tellign me they’re bogus?

Doe I think the company is real? Probably. Do I think their research is worth anything?
Maybe, maybe not, depending on who they did the "research" for.

To answer your question, do I think their findings are bogus? In a word, "Yes".

Hey Xena!
Usually I agree with you, but you need to spend a winter in Indiana before you make broad generalizations about the "need" for SUV's.

Yes, they're gorgeous. I also love the '56 and '57s.

Yes, very lovely. Unfortunately, the spare change needed to pick something like that up, in that kind of condition, will run six figures: Close to $200K!

Imagine those used to sell new in the what, $3,000 ~ $5,000 range. Too bad I was only eight when they were new.

“The greasy side of a gig sedan stays down better.”

What’s a “gig sedan”? Is that what the Blues Brothers drove? That was a big “gig” sedan there - and it had a cop motor, cop suspension, cop brakes...

Like I said before, what’s a station wagon? Some relic from the 20th century? The reason ppl drive SUVs is because they don’t want to get stuck driving the MINIVAN all the time. They want something with similar storage/seating capacity but a little more sportiness to it, especially since ppl spend so much time in their vehicles commuting, etc. I don’t have kids so I don’t have to worry about it, but I thought I’d just clue you in that no one drives station wagons any more, and if you polled ppl under 21, they’ve probably never heard of one and don’t know what one is.
