Senator In Scandal Won't Resign Republican Acknowledged Connection To 'D.C. Madam'

POSTED: 1:38 pm EDT July 16, 2007 UPDATED: 6:16 pm EDT July 16, 2007 NEW ORLEANS -- Louisiana U.S. Sen. David Vitter, who last week admitted to a connection with the so-called D.C. Madam, said Monday he will not resign.

Vitter said he was in seclusion because he wanted time alone with his family and for prayer.

"I'm so very, very sorry" to all those let down by the revelations, Vitter said.

"I will work every day to rebuild this trust," he said.

Vitter, who is Catholic, said he confessed about his indescretions a number of years ago.

"I believe I received forgiveness from God. I know I did from Wendy," he said of his wife, Wendy Vitter.

Vitter is a conservative who ran for office on a platform opposing abortion and supporting a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. He replaced former Democratic Rep. Bob Livingston, who resigned after rumors of numerous affairs.

Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt played a role in exposing both men's activities.

"I think Livingston’s stepping down makes a very powerful argument that (former President Bill) Clinton should resign as well and move beyond this mess,” he said.

Flynt said last week that his magazine was the first to link Vitter to an escort service operated by Deborah Jeane Palfrey. She is accused of running an escort service in Washington, D.C., a charge she denies.

Vitter acknowledged last Monday that his telephone number appeared among others in Palfrey's records.

He made the admission to The Associated Press in a statement. Flynt said Vitter went to the AP only after one of his reporters contacted Vitter to confirm the connection to Palfrey.

It doesn’t make sense does it? I’m not for giving any of them a pass but I keep thinking of The Firm. Anyway, this is between God, him, and his family.

I can think of a load of offenses that are far more important of a crime than playing with sex. What the hell is going on. It is none of our business and changes nothing. Everyone makes mistakes, so why don't we, just like you say, let it between God, him, and his family. Maybe it's time to mind our own business into their private lives and work on saving what is left of America.

Feh. No need for him to resign. Everybody does it. Of course, that’s why We The People are royally screwed, but so it goes.

I think that he should stay if for no reason other than the Dim’s want him to resign so they can get him replaced with another leftist moron.

Flynt is pond scum feces. It’s time Republicans openly denounce him.

Saw Larry Flynt on Hannity last night, says he has dirt on several in Congress and 2 Senators.

I'll take a wild guess that it's not Harry Reid, Henry Waxman, or John Murtha. Even prostitutes have standards.

There is only one reason why people are calling for Vitter to resign: the Senate is 49R-49D-2I, with one D out on long-term disability, and one I wavering.

A Democrat was a Republican Speaker of the House? How does that work?

Teddy Kennedy has still not been prosecuted for vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Teddy didn't get what he deserved but he entered a plea of guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident after causing injury. He received a sentence of two months in jail, which was suspended.

Oh goodie. No double jeopardy for killing Mary Jo Kopechne. It wasn't injury. He ditched the car in the water and deliberately left her to drown. The slob went back to the hotel to sleep off his drunken stupor, then reported the "accident" 10 hours later.

Jay Leno said that the Senator (allegedly) paid hookers $300 to make him wear diapers. I don’t know if that’s true or just a sick joke - but if that is his preference it makes sense that he would seek out someone for hire (and hopefully anonymity) instead of his wife.

Of course he won’t resign. The ‘Rat governor of Louisiana would appoint a ‘Rat (possibly even herself) to replace him.
