Tancredo wins applause at NAACP
Boston Globe ^ | Thursday, July 12, 2007 | Scott Helman

DETROIT -- As Susan Milligan noted in today's Globe, Republican presidential hopefuls have largely shied away from appearing before organizations and groups deemed to have a liberal slant. But don't tell that to US Representative Tom Tancredo of Colorado, the lone GOP candidate to appear this morning at the NAACP's annual convention in Detroit.

After he came out, Tancredo wandered around the empty stage, not knowing which podium to use. "Oh, right here?" he said when led to the center lectern. "Oh my gosh, this is amazing."

"Do you think we should wait a few minutes to see if these other guys show up?" Tancredo said, drawing a big laugh from the crowd. "Do they know something I don't know, is that it? I think actually I know something that they don't know."

That line drew a loud cheer from the audience, clearly appreciative that Tancredo had bothered to show up. He used his opening remarks to talk about his signature issue, illegal immigration, and how it was hurting American workers, and especially African-American workers. Tancredo said he gets "insulted" every time he hears that illegal immigrants are working jobs American citizens won't take.

"I've done those jobs, you've done those jobs, our kids have done those jobs," he said.

we solve the security problem first, and then we'll talk about what to do with regard to other things

Highlight whatever parts you like. Some people (including one of the GOP's candidates) have a plan that is a workable solution and doesn't involve rounding anyone up and can tell us what that plan is instead of expecting us to trust them.

Thompson can say all day long that it's not amnesty, but he's singing from the same hymnal as Bush - who was pushing for amnesty and telling us that it was not amnesty.

Thompson is not the second coming that so many people are hoping for. In the same way that many people - myself included - were champions for Bush in the early years, especially after 9/11 - a lot of people are being fooled by the Party's candidate. And that's what Thompson is ... the candidate for the establishment Republicans.

This man is all of the things that conservatives typically stay away from: a lobbyist, a lawyer, an actor, a moderate.

I have no illusions. I'm sure in 2008 the party will get the candidate the Party wants, and I don't doubt that it will be Fred Thompson.

Highlighting different parts doesn't change who he is. He said all of it.

Thompson says he’s not for amnesty but admits he has no solution for dealing with the 12 million to 20 million law breakers in our country. He offers statements about vague policies, but no solution.”

That’s because there *IS* no immediate solution.

It took years for us to build up to having 20 million illegal aliens amongst us, and will take years to dig out from that hole. Both amnesty and instant-deportation-for-all are non-viable ‘solutions’; the first is a surrender to the problem, the second is impossible due to fabric of laws we have and the impossibility of govt ability to be effective. It’s a conservative thing to recognize the limits of Govt action and power, so let’s recognize that it will take a while to work down the illegal immigrant population and clean up the mess.

So what do we do? Fred T. and w eall agree on a few elements.
1. Control the border
2. Fix immigration law in the workplace
3. Fix the deportation process so we can actually deport people.
4. Get US visit program up and running, track entries and exits.

” ...and then we’ll talk about what to do with regard to other things — certainly no amnesty or nothing blanket like that.”

... I’ve said the same myself during the immigration debate. There’s a door he’s leaving open to limited legalization but not to amnesty. IMHO, the drawing line is this: Whatever we do later on to ‘address’ the remaining people who are illegally here right now, the numbers should always be capped, and the program shouldn’t be designed to be for illegal immigrants only.

based on what he has said and done in the past, my belief is that Thompson's solution is legalization of illegal aliens.

Based on what he said, it is apparent that you didn't listen. He said nothing about legalizing illegal aliens.

Whomever or whatever candidate wants to fight illegal immigration, look out for US citizens, oppose terrorists, and make this idiotic climate change lunacy just what it is, lunacy, could win this election, if he makes his stance well known.

It won’t be easy, the MSM, Dems and RINO’s will fight you tooth and nail.

Most US citzens are against illegal immigration and against a Muslim invasion.

School vouchers too, if tancredo supports that, I don’t know.

You can click on the link below to see where Tancredo stands on vouchers. This former educator is very much in favor of vouchers and has been for a long time (this was written in 1991).

America Can't Afford to Wait

Unlike some of the candidates, Tancredo doesn't have to establish his conservative convictions by changing his tune, re-framing the nuances in his previous statements or backtracking on votes by saying things like, "It didn't work the way I thought it was going to work."

He voted against the Bush-Kennedy "No Child Left Behind" act, too.

He didn't pander to them.

Actually just being at the NAACP was pandering. His cheep shots at those who stayed away to garner a laugh from them was pandering too. The NAACP is run by racists that should not be encouraged by decent folks.

"You're going to have to, in some way, work out a deal where they can have some aspirations of citizenship but not make it so easy that it's unfair to the people waiting in line and abiding by the law."

Thompson said this. This is exactly what legalizing illegal aliens is.

I think that Tancredo would do better if he ran as an independent. He could pick up millions of votes from people who are disgusted with both political parties. When he runs as a republican he gets drowned out by the other candidates. There are a lot of voters out there who are looking for something other than the greasy politician.

This is a very good point, Sittin. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) and to me, that represents the same old globalist agenda,...just a different face.

Maybe and maybe not.... I”m not sure it’s that cut and dried yet but things aren’t long before they will be decided. The Ames Iowa straw poll is only 30 days away and usually you’ll see a weeding out after it. This time however the two of the leading candidates aren’t participating and Thompson isn’t an official candidate yet. So effectively three of what could be the top four aren't participating. Thus history may not be an accurate predictor in Ames this time. In any case, time is running out for the lower tier group to get organizations in place in the multitude of states that will have primaries shortly after Jan. 08. I don't see that happening...

Here is some more ammo for you.

Conservatives, Beware of Fred Thompson

In this article by Richard A. Viguerie, you will learn:

How Fred Thompson disappointed conservatives during his 8 years in the Senate.

The only time he played a major role on a major piece of legislation—and he was on the liberal side.

Why he fails the Goldwater Test, getting an F.

Why he fails the Reagan Test, getting an F.

How he runs around with the wrong crowd—the Marshmallow Republicans.

Why one of Washington’s key media liberals is maneuvering for Fred Thompson.

What his “wrong” votes on these 18 important issues tell us about his commitment to conservatism.

Why everyone is so confused by his stance on abortion: Is he pro-life, pro-choice, or both? And,

Why he is not the conservative leader we need.

Well sometimes a conservative has to work with reality to mug some liberals.

You know what the call a liberal that was mugged by reality is right?

If Tom were to disrupt teamsters by talking about the mexican truckers he would completely disrupt the Dems base.

Here is some more ammo for you.

I appreciate the link, but I'm not looking for more ammunition on Fred. It's ridiculous to try to debate or argue the point with his fans.

If you use their own links to point out to them that Fred is a left-leaning moderate, they will claim that the link is an unreliable source.

If you use his own words to demonstrate that Fred is a left-leaning moderate, they will tell you that you are a liar or that you didn't read his quotes correctly.

If you use his own voting record to point out that Fred is a left-leaning moderate, they will tell you that Fred has changed his mind on that vote (now that the vote is cast, the bill is law and he's not in the Senate ... thanks, Fred).

And if you point out that the man doesn't have a policy agenda, they will urge you to just be patient, give the man some time or - absurdly - point to his blog and tell you that it is, in fact, a policy agenda.

Arguing with one of Fred's fans is an absurd waste of time because they won't let facts and records get in the way of their gushing over their candidate.

The illegal immigration issue represents the best opportunity Republicans have ever had to move the black vote off the Democrat party plantation and it seems that Tancredo is the only one to recognize it.

Democrats supporting illegals and illegal immigration are trying to juggle that position with their traditional appeal to the blue collar workers, their pro-union stance and their alliance with black leaders.

There is a lot of conflict there and smart republicans will take advantage of this opportunity to make inroads on those voting blocs.
