Giuliani's Key Supporters Ensnared in Sex, Drugs
New York Newsday ^ | July 11, 2007 | Tom Brune

Manchester, N.H. -- Another key supporter of Republican presidential contender Rudy Giuliani suffered an embarrassment when he admitted the "serious sin" of at one time calling an escort service accused of being a prostitution ring.

Sen. David Vitter (R-La.), who is Giuliani's most prominent Southern conservative supporter, was implicated when the so-called "D.C. Madam" disclosed that his phone number was found among the telephone records of the escort service, Pamela Martin and Associates, in a period before he was elected to the Senate in 2004.

"This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible," Vitter said in a statement Monday night. "Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and my wife in confession ..and marriage counseling."

Vitter's implication in a prostitution ring comes just three days after Giuliani's former state campaign chairman for the crucial primary state of South Carolina was formally arraigned in a federal criminal cocaine-possession indictment.

After a town-hall meeting in New Hampshire yesterday, Giuliani called Vitter's admission a "personal matter" for Vitter. Giuliani also defended his own record of appointing qualified people as mayor of New York, though he conceded some were disappointments.

That two of Giuliani's key Southern supporters have become ensnared in prostitution and drug cases could revive concerns about some of his past New York associates, notably Bernard Kerik. He has pleaded guilty to two state corruption charges for accepting free renovation of his apartment.

This story was supplemented with Associated Press reports.

I am not a Rudy supporter but this is just another hit piece by the liberal MSM.

At least Vitter called an escort service which I do not condone, instead of taking advantage of a naivete intern working under the Presidents desk.

Anyone who reads and relishes this article certainly is not a Reagan Conservative.

Reagan would not go for speaking evil of other Republicans no matter what.

‘I am not a Rudy supporter but this is just another hit piece by the liberal MSM.’

There is some truth to your statement, no denying it.

But the fact remains we all know when Rudy gets bored, like Clinton his personal life gets ugly. So this ‘linkage’ is to be expected.

Flynt is nothing more than a bitter person.

Mad at the world for not dying at the hands of a deranged gunman.

Wow... what a great way to twist a scandal to hit a candidate that the newspaper doesn’t like! And here I thought that most journalists were simply too lazy to be that creative!

I know that “liberals” like to use someone like Vitter as an example of “moral hypocrisy” among “family values” conservatives.

I am not one who knows Vitter personally, nor do I know anyone close to him, personally or politically. So, my impression of his situation is drawn from what I have seen while watching him in his political career.

To me, one like Vitter does not represent hypocrisy.

To me, one like Vitter differs from one like a BJ Clinton in that he is one who has struggled against a moral wrong in his own behavior; a moral wrong he did not agree with and which he fought, unsuccessfully, against. BJ Clinton is not a saint and Vitter a hypocritical sinner. BJ Clinton, in my view, never did and does not now, view the behavior he was condemned for as a grave moral error.

None of us live completely up to God’s expectation of us and all of us know our own errors that we struggle against. I acknowledge Vitter as one with all of us in that sense, but I do not see Clinton standing there, because I do not believe he ever did or does now see himself as standing there. Vitter is one who has erred and knows his error. Knowing the error and not being able to succeed against it is not the same, as in Clinton’s case, as not even believing in the error in the first place. Vitter is one who would ask for God’s help. Clinton is one who would ask God why it was he who got caught.

I would continue to support Vitter and wish him success, in his moral life and his professional life.

We know there must be dozens of Democrats, because ABC's Brian Ross dropped the story as soon as he saw the list.

The RATS in Louisiana are spreading some extremely vial rumors about Vitter that go beyond anything reported in the news. They’ll stop at nothing, and they won’t stop at Vitter. Hang on for more filth from the left wing propaganda machine.

I agree. Vitter knows firsthand how damaging immorality can be to a family. He has been forgiven and that should be the end of it. He’s not a hypocrite at all, his testimony should carry even more weight on moral issues now.

The DC Madame is under indictment for catering to customers such as Vitter. He never got caught for supporting her business, so he pays no legal penalty. I guess he was lucky.
