ut such high-minded objections sail over the chief source of Live Earth's lameness. The acts were mostly fine. But the outrage and passion felt so prepackaged you half-expected Ludacris (who rapped about the evils of SUVs) to say "this moral outrage is brought to you by GE's 'Ecomagination.' " Indeed, one could say that Live Earth is proof that global warming has jumped the shark, except for the fact that the phrase "jumped the shark" has jumped the shark.
Madonna, Genesis, UB40, the Police, Cat Stevens (now Yusuf Islam), Crowded House, Duran Duran — these were among the headliners for this supposedly cutting-edge extravaganza. I listened to these acts in high school more than 20 years ago — and some of them were already going gray by then. Phil Collins and Sting are 56. Cat Stevens is just shy of 60. The Rolling Stones didn't play Live Earth, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was because Mick Jagger needed a hip replacement.
Like the Rolling Stones, who define "graceful retirement" as drags on the oxygen tank between sets, these acts hawk youthful-activism nostalgia for the fans rich enough to pay for it.
Some argue that environmentalism has become a secular religion. Buying carbon offsets, they say, is the modern equivalent of purchasing indulgences for your sins from the Catholic Church. Live Earth certainly fit into that vision. The concerts seemed like Baptist hoedowns of yore, except now Gore is the Billy Sunday for the baby boomer booboisie.

Everything else was was a bore. Unless you liked hearing about "the video tutorial about Ed Begley Jr.'s eco-friendly home and sanctimony-powered go-cart." No wonder millions took a pass on Live Earth.

I finally got to see the Al Gore “hologram” segment. It reminded me of the movie Strange Brew when the murdered former head of the brewery appears to his daughter in order to warn her of the villain’s scheme. He doesn’t speak but just kind of shoots words from his fingers in an intentionally cheesy way.
I was riding in a taxi in NYC today and the driver, from Ghana, was listening to Air America. It’s the first time I ever heard that station and I actually listened with interest. The host was going on and on about how Air America was actually a startling success, despite what we liars on the right might say, but that’s not what the callers wanted to talk about. They called in, one after another, to endorse the Fairness Doctrine, which the host, to his credit, didn’t agree with, saying that in his long experience in broadcasting he had witnessed how it killed all political discourse.
His argument didn’t persuade any of the callers, who repeated over and over how important it was to get “correct information” out there to the public, by any means necessary.
They were the keepers of “correct information”.
It’s always amusing to me how those who push the “Fairness Doctrine” are so sure they are the keepers of “correct information”.
I say all this here, now, on this thread, because its amusing — and sad — to think that under any “Fairness Doctrine” a voice as brilliant and well-spoken as Goldberg’s would surely be locked out by those who are the keepers of “correct information” and who, to a person, can’t hold a candle to Goldberg when it comes to any of the powers of the human mind that involve actual reasoning.
Goldberg is the best. He shows his stuff again here. I would love to see a debate between a proponent of the “Fairness Doctrine” and Jonah Goldberg.

is a link to another article. Note how it mentions the ratings expectations, and actual numbers, but doesn't say exactly where "Live Earth" finished , And, it says nothing about it getting lower ratings then the usual Saturday night programming. LOL.
That said, is there perhaps hope that enough Westerners see this odd combination of zaniness and evil for what it is - and will rebuff it accordingly? Are most folks still decent folks like you and me? There is at least a modicum of hope in the lack of interest in this latest Algore production.
I'm in my thirties. I grew up generally considering my elders (WWII "Greatest" generation) to be of a superior fiber than younger folks, moral people with a solid moral foundation. That respect will never wane. Now, with the Boomers, we face just on the horizon a long period where the older folks will be considered more decrepit and deviant. How will this impact society? Will the younger folks be able to save us? Sorry for these cruising-altitude questions on a current event thread, but I cannot help but wonder.
I’m a boomer. We go to church at least once a week, spend 20+ hours a week volunteering, both are gainfully employed, have saved enough to retire comfortably. We are surrounded by Xer’s in our neighborhood who can’t “walk” their dogs or pick up their mail without a 4-wheeler, who exhibit all the degenerate, hedonistic behavior of which you accuse boomers, and are generally unpleasant to have as neighbors.
I beg you, stop with the ugly stereotyping of an entire generation. Most of us do not deserve it and it reeks of bigotry.
