WASHINGTON Louisiana Sen. David Vitter apologized Monday for his telephone number showing up on the old phone records of Pamela Martin and Associates, the alleged prostitution ring run in the nation's capital by Deborah Jeane Palfrey.
"This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible," Vitter said in a statement.
"Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and my wife in confession and marriage counseling. Out of respect for my family, I will keep my discussion of the matter there --with God and them. But I certainly offer my deep and sincere apologies to all I have disappointed and let down in any way," he wrote.
The acknowledgment from Vitter, a Republican who recently won praise from conservatives for his opposition to the immigration reform bill, comes days after U.S. District Court Judge Gladys Kessler lifted a restraining order, allowing Palfrey, 51, to distribute pages of phone records that she and her attorney said contains up to 15,000 names.
On Monday, she released the numbers on her Web site.

You think a guy who's confessed to adultery with a prostitute is telling the truth about being sorry?!
When caught, they all say “I’ve sinned deeply”, or some other such nonsense.
He’s a conservative Republican. I’m prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. Besides, we’ve ALL done things we wish we hadn’t...
This is not new news about Vitter. In 2003, he was contemplating a run for Governor of Louisiana when rumors of his “problems” surfaced. He publicly alluded to “personal issues” and that was that. It was enough, however, to kill his ambitions for Governor.
And that kind of thinking is what got Toon elected twice.
Three hundred million Americans in this country and we can't find a few hundred that aren't degenerates?!
You’ve done anything you’re ashamed of?
“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”
None of us is sinless and I’m not casting stones. I’m also not saying he’s a bad man and that he should resign or be destroyed by this. However, we live in a day when the private lives of politicians are more scrutinized than ever before. Particularly in this post Clinton, and since he is from Louisiana, post Bob Livingston era, I’m just wondering what could have gone through the mind of a conservative Republican senator, with four small children and a wife, that would lead him to make such a seemingly poor decision.
Yeah. Can’t argue with that. BUT the important thing is he was genuinely sorry and confessed BEFORE it was made public.
I doubt he’s a Clinton, Kennedy, et al.
Ubiquitous cell phones are making pay phones go the way of the dodo.
I chuckle every time I see a bank of pay phones in a hotel convention area. They’re gone in the next big renovation, I assure you.
FWIW, I'm not asking for perfection. But some sins, it seems to me, are a lot worse than others.
“The acknowledgment from Vitter, a Republican ...”
Some sins are no doubt worse than others. Thankfully, our Heavenly Father has the capacity to forgive them all if true repentence is shown. He asks us to do the same.
>>Why would a John give a prostitute his phone number?
Caller ID?
Sex life? Who cares? Breaking the law? Now we have a problem worth discussing.
The “media and their puppet masters” held a gun to this guy’s head and made him hold this press conference?
I don’t want stones. I just want him out of office.
And there's the sticking point, but I'll leave the forgiving up to God and Wendy Vitter.
But I wouldn't ever vote for this guy.
Why? He votes the right way. I’d prefer a sinner who opposes baby killing than a sanctimonious pr*ck who supports mass slaughter.
