In a story from Sydney covering the Live Earth Gorebasm Concerts, the following picture was included:
Caption: Cool start ... scientists from the British research station in Antarctica were the first to kick off the Live Earth concerts with their indie band, Nunatak. Photo: Reuters
There is something odd about this picture, namely that it is the dead of Winter in Antarctica right now. The conditions there right now are perpetual darkness and unbearably cold temperatures. Yet in this photo, it is daylight, and one of the musicians isn't even wearing a hat. Exposed skin is highly susceptible to frostbite at temperatures below -20 degrees. If you look closely, you can even see liquid water in the background which would not be possible this close to land.
al-Reuters committing journalistic fraud??
No...WAY!!!! </sarcasm off>
Playing guitar with mittens on is sooooo out of style.
“....FROM the British research station in Antarctica....
They may be from there, but that doesn’t mean they are there right now.
Where did they find snow? I thought it was all gone. Oh that’s right it is summer.
The British reseach in question is right along the Antarctic Circle. So they would get a couple hours of light at that latitude this time of year.

Also, production of those parkas requires petroleum byproducts, which we all know environmentally-conscious individuals such as these would never use.
OH NO!! Global warming has affected the earths axis.
We are doomed, just like Al said.
ha ha
You see, it’s a new style of atonal Mongolian metal.
That is a nice guitar, though!
They have a set of drums. I didn’t antarctic researchers had such generous baggage allowances.
Its global warming, silly. Of course its practically balmy in Antarctica these days. As for the daylight, its a little known fact of global warming that SUV’s have caused the Earth to alter its orbit and the inclination on its axis. This picture is proof of all of this. After all the debate is over, don’t you den1ers understand this?
And that smoke. It’s, it’s. It’s been copied?
(oh wait, wrong photo sorry)
The ice they are standing on also doesn`t seem to match. It looks fake compared to the background.
Taxpayer funded research is boundless, especially if bringing your drums will save the planet. It's also cheaper than the kilo of mary jane he brought to keep himself busy for 6 months.
These guys are stationed at a British research station along the Antarctic Peninsula just below the Antarctic Circle.
Although the sun might not quite rise this time of year, there would still be a couple of hours of light equivalent to the time right before sunrise or after sunset.
This well could be some kind of staged publicity photo regarding actually playing their instruments in 10 degree (F) weather outside, but I sincerely doubt these guys needed to have make-believe snow outside the base.
A friend of mine is a music professor and clasical guitar player. He won't take his guitar outside if the temperature drops below 50
I have played guitar and pedal steel outside in 10 degree weather. It was not fun! I did my best to play hot licks, but they came out cold and slow. I went into a store and bought gloves and cut most of the fingers off. Cleveland. End of the Holiday Season when they took down the tree, and judged an ice sculpting contest. NEVER AGAIN!
Temperatures at Halley rarely rise above 0°C although temperatures around -10°C are common on sunny summer days. Typical winter temperatures are below -20°C with extreme lows of around -55°C.
Winter Winds are predominantly from the east; strong winds usually pick up the dusty surface snow reducing visibility to a few metres.
One of the reasons for the location of Halley is that it is under the auroral oval, resulting in frequent displays of the Aurora Australis overhead. These are easiest to see during the 105 days when the sun does not rise above the horizon.
