:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
US Steps Up Security Following Attack in Britain

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff made appearances on several television talk shows.

He told ABC's This Week program there is no indication of a linkage between the events in Britain and any specific attacks on the United States. "We do not have, at this point, specific, credible intelligence that there is an attack, a particular attack, focused on this country," he said.

But at the same time, speaking on CNN's Late Edition program, Chertoff said U.S. authorities are concerned about the threat of terrorism, especially in the coming months. "We have had a number of al-Qaida leaders quite publicly talking about how they want to carry out their threats against the West. So, given that and given the history that we have had over past summers, with attacks in Britain, I think we were clearly focused on this as a possibility," he said. Full story...

“Managing Volunteer Resources”
Getting the most help from the helpers

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “As has been shown again after the attacks of September 11 and Hurricane Katrina, there is never a shortage of help after a disaster, but often an overabundance of volunteer help and donated resources. The effective and efficient managing of these volunteer resources is important to avoid a second disaster.”

FBI Warns Public of E-mail Scams

The FBI today warned the public against three separate Internet scams that continue to flourish through spam e-mails. The warning comes after the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received a rising number of complaints from citizens over the past few weeks.

In one scam, an e-mail recipient receives an electronic greeting card containing malware (malicious software). The cards, which are also referred to as e-cards or postcards, are being sent via spam. Like many other Internet fraud schemes, the perpetrators use social engineering tactics to entice the victim, claiming the card is from a family member or friend. Although there have been variations in the spam message and attached malware, generally the spam directs the recipient to click the link provided in the email to view their e-card. Upon clicking the link, the recipient is unknowingly taken to a malicious web page.

In another scam, fraudulent e-mails misrepresent the FBI and/or Director Robert S. Mueller III and give the appearance of legitimacy due to the usage of pictures of the FBI Director, seal, letter head, and/or banners. The types of schemes utilizing the Director’s name and/or FBI are lottery endorsements and inheritance notifications.

The third is spam e-mail which claim to be from an official of the U.S. military sent on behalf of American soldiers stationed overseas. The scam e-mails vary in content; however, the general theme of each is to request personal information and/or funds from the individual receiving the e-mail.

These spam e-mail messages are hoaxes and should be immediately deleted. Consumers need to be wary of unsolicited e-mails that request them to take any action even if that means just clicking on an attachment. It is possible that by “double-clicking” on attachments to these messages, recipients will cause malicious software — e.g., viruses, keystroke loggers, or other Trojan horse programs—to be launched on their computers.

For further information on computer safety tips please visit the FBI website at www.fbi.gov and the IC3 website at www.ic3.gov.

“Red Mosque in Rebellion”

by Daniel Pipes
New York Sun
July 17, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Mosques have been used as places for inciting violence, planning operations, and storing weapons, but deploying one as a base to overthrow the government creates a precedent. The Red Mosque model offers Islamists a bold tactic, one they likely will try again, especially if the recent episode, which has shaken the country, succeeds in pushing Mr. Musharraf out of office.”

“Al Qaeda ‘evolving’ against U.S.”
By Bill Gertz
July 18, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “”Although we have discovered only a handful of individuals in the United States with ties to al Qaeda senior leadership since 9/11, we judge that al Qaeda will intensify its efforts to put operatives here,” the report stated.

Retired Vice Adm. Michael McConnell, the director of national intelligence whose office produced the NIE, said the United States will face a “persistent and evolving terrorist threat” in the next three years.

The seven-page public summary of the classified report said the United States is in a “heightened threat environment.”

“They’re working as hard as they can in positioning trained operatives here in the United States,” Mr. McConnell said. “They have recruitment programs to bring recruits into [the tribal] region of Pakistan [who] could come to the United States, fit into the population and then use some of the training that they receive in the Pakistani area for explosives and so on.””

“HLF’s P.R. Blitz: “Islamophobia” and Apple Pie”
By Steven Emerson
(July 17, 2007)

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Yesterday, jury selection began in the largest terrorism financing case in U.S. history, against alleged Hamas-front group, the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF).

Yesterday also witnessed the launch of the defense’s public strategy, a dual-track approach consisting of self-appointed Muslim leaders (in this instance, many are implicated in the case themselves, as the Council on American-Islamic Relations [CAIR] was named as an un-indicted co-conspirator), and some in the media, claiming the prosecution is “Islamophobic,” while family members of the defendants wrap themselves in the American flag.”

“Tokyo Electric Power reports 50 quake-caused problems at nuclear plant”
Wednesday, July 18, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “TOKYO — A total of 50 cases of water leakage, fire and other problems have occurred at a nuclear power plant in Niigata Prefecture due to the powerful earthquake that hit the prefecture Monday, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Tuesday.

The government’s Nuclear and Industry Safety Agency said it will send a four-member team to check and confirm the cases, while the industry ministry ordered the company to suspend operations at the plant until quake-resistant safety is assured.

Tokyo Electric Power said it confirmed the 50 cases at the seven reactors of its Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant, including a blaze, leakage of water containing radioactive material, detection of a small quantity of radiation from a ventilation filter and toppling of drums containing low-level radioactive waste.

The blaze and water leakage was reported Monday, but the other cases were revealed a day after the magnitude 6.8 quake hit Niigata and Nagano prefectures Monday morning.

Nine people died in the quake and more than 1,000 were injured.”

“Brazilian plane crash ‘kills 200’”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A passenger plane has crashed and burst into flames at Brazil’s busiest airport, in the heart of Sao Paulo, killing up to 200 people.
Rescue crews said none of the 176 people on board the Airbus A320 could have survived, while more people were killed on the ground.

The TAM airliner skidded off the runway as it landed in wet weather, shot over a busy road and hit a fuel depot.

Concerns had been raised about the safety of the runway during heavy rain.

There had been persistent, heavy downpours in the two hours before the accident.”

“Critical Blood Shortage in the Washington Area”
July 17, 2007 - 5:40pm

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “WASHINGTON - The blood supply in the Washington area has reached a critical level, according to the American Red Cross. Less than 50 units of Type ‘O’ blood are available from Virginia to Pennsylvania as of July 13.

“We service about 56 hospitals and 10 trauma centers within that area,” says Gary Ouellette, CEO of the Greater Chesapeake and Potomac region of the American Red Cross. “Right now, if we had a serious emergency we would not be able to meet that need.””

“Young American Muslims Encouraged To Seek Public-Service Careers
Group meets with U.S. officials, elected representatives in Washington”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Washington — Young American Muslims should make their voices heard in American mainstream society and consider careers in public service, U.S. government officials say.

Officials at the U.S. Department of State met July 12 with 27 highly accomplished individuals aged 20 to 25 from across the United States.

There is a “huge receptivity to ideas” at the State Department, according to Ambassador Shirin Tahir-Kheli. She said the State Department and the Bush administration are committed to reaching out to young Muslims.

Tahir-Kheli is the senior adviser on women’s empowerment issues to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Of Pakistani heritage, Tahir-Kheli said she is the first Muslim to be appointed as a U.S. ambassador.

Among the State Department officials available to answer the young people’s questions was Seema Matin, who joined the State Department in 2002 and currently is a public diplomacy officer working for Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Karen Hughes. Matin has been recognized for her contributions to one of Hughes’ “War of Ideas” initiatives, which focuses on countering ideological support for terrorism.”
