Oil tanker runs aground off New York’s Coney Island
Published: 07.13.07, 07:44 / Israel News
A tanker carrying about 23 million gallons (87 million liters)of diesel oil ran aground off New York City’s Coney Island. No oil spill or injuries were reported.
Something went wrong with the steering system on the ship White Sea around 6:30 am Thursday, causing it to turn off course and run into the sandy bottom of a channel, said Coast Guard spokesman Chief Bob Laura. The tanker, between New York’s Coney Island and Sandy Hook National Park in New Jersey, both beach areas, deployed a boom to contain any spills, Laura said. (AP)

“Immigration, Security, and Prosperity”
By James R. Edwards Jr.
Center for Immigration Studies | July 13, 2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, bound the United States, Canada, and Mexico into a trilateral “free trade” relationship among the three nations of the North American continent. Trade enthusiasts hailed NAFTA as holding great promise to elevate the economies of the three nations. Today, “NAFTA Plus,” or the so-called Security and Prosperity Partnership, is gaining more and more attention because it would move well beyond NAFTA and trade per se.
Importantly, “NAFTA was the first major trade pact signed by the United States to bring significant immigration consequences.”1 It set a precedent that moved this country down the path of equating “free trade” with not only the free flow of goods across borders, but also trade in services and the borderless flow of people.
Such trade pacts carry huge implications for national sovereignty. While a “free trade agreement” (FTA) does not have the legally binding power of a treaty, which would require two-thirds approval of the U.S. Senate, an FTA does indeed subject participating nations to certain legal obligations to one another.

COLUMN SNIPPET: “Washington, D.C. — This week in Islamabad, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf ordered commandos to assault the Red Mosque after a six-day siege against well-armed Taliban-supporting militants. Less than 24 hours later, Ayman al-Zawahri, Osama bin Laden’s apparent successor to the command of al Qaeda, issued his third “Jihadist Exhortation” of the month — a new record.
Meanwhile, here in Washington, more Republicans joined the “get out of Iraq” chorus as Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff described his “gut feeling” that a major terrorist event against us is in the offing. The next day President Bush christened the new White House briefing room, explaining that public debate is not about whether to bring the troops home, it is between “those who think the fight is lost or not worth the cost and those who believe the fight can be won, and (know) the costs of defeat would be far higher.”
Chertoff’s queasiness — my word, not his — is well founded. The months ahead are very likely to be, as he put it, a period of “increased risk.” It’s not just because of “seasonal patterns of terrorist attacks” or “recent al Qaeda statements.” Rather, the greater threat of terrorist activity is very likely tied to a perception — widely supported by the U.S. press and an increasing number of politicians — that the West cannot stabilize Iraq or Afghanistan and will therefore “withdraw” from the unprovoked war radical Islam is waging against us.
Ever since liberal Democrats took control of the U.S. Congress in January, there has been much in the Western media to encourage those who are dying to kill us.”

German firms smuggled nuclear material to Iran: prosecutor
afp ^ | 7/12/07 | afp
Posted on 07/12/2007 5:55:58 PM PDT by Flavius
POTSDAM, Germany (AFP) - German prosecutors on Thursday said they are investigating some 50 companies suspected of smuggling technology to Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant via Russia.
Berlin-based company Vero is suspected of having smuggled material to build the nuclear reactor through Poland to Moscow, from where it was taken to Iran, said Christoph Lange from the prosecutor’s office in Potsdam near Berlin.
He said Vero appeared to have been buying up nuclear technology in Germany and elsewhere in Europe since 2000 at the orders of Russia, which is constructing Iran’s first nuclear power plant in the town of Bushehr.
Lange said prosecutors have so far only traced material worth about five million euros (6.8 million dollars), but that this appeared to be the tip of the iceberg. Up to 150 million euros’ worth of material may have left Germany for Iran, he estimates.

German intelligence satellite sent into orbit aboard Russian rocket
07.03.07, 10:49 - Israel - A Russian rocket sent a German reconnaissance satellite into orbit, a military spokesman said Tuesday - the latest good news for Russian efforts to garner a larger share of the lucrative international market for space launches.
The German SAR-Lupe-2 satellite went into orbit late Monday night around 30 minutes after the Kosmos-3M rocket blasted off from the Plesetsk launch pad in northern Russia, Space Forces spokesman Alexei Zolotukhin said. A total of five satellites will ultimately comprise the SAR-Lupe system, which will be Germany’s first satellite-based reconnaissance system, allowing high-resolution radar images night and day, according to German officials.

“al-Qaida Works to Plant U.S. Operatives”
July 13, 2007 - 6:51am
By KATHERINE SHRADER
Associated Press Writer
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “WASHINGTON (AP) - Al-Qaida is stepping up its efforts to sneak terror operatives into the United States and has acquired most of the capabilities it needs to strike here, according to a new U.S. intelligence assessment, The Associated Press has learned.
The draft National Intelligence Estimate is expected to paint an ever-more-worrisome portrait of al-Qaida’s ability to use its base along the Pakistan-Afghan border to launch and inspire attacks against the United States over the next several years.
Yet, the government’s top analysts concluded that U.S. soil has become a harder target for the extremist network, thanks to worldwide counterterror efforts since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.”

Signal to Attack? Worries Over Latest al Qaeda Tape
July 13, 2007 12:36 PM
Brian Ross and Rhonda Schwartz Report:
Fearing a possible coded signal to attack, U.S. intelligence and law enforcement officials are studying an unusual pattern of words in the latest audiotape from al Qaeda’s No. 2 man, Ayman al Zawahri.
On the tape, posted on the Internet Wednesday, Zawahri repeats one phrase three times at the end of his message.
Have I not conveyed? Oh God be my witness.
Have I not conveyed? Oh God be my witness.
Have I not conveyed? Oh God be my witness.
A new FBI analysis of al Qaeda messages, obtained by the Blotter on ABCNews.com, warns that “continued messages that convey their strategic intent to strike the U.S. homeland and U.S. interests worldwide should not be discounted as merely deceptive noise.”
Intelligence analysts are also investigating technical clues that Zawahri’s most recent audio message was phoned in via computer phone, using voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP.
The ease and frequency of Zawahri’s propaganda messages is one of the factors that have led U.S. intelligence analysts to worry abut a possible attack against the United States this summer.
The new FBI analysis, reviewing more than 70 al Qaeda messages over the last 14 years, found a recurring theme of “the duty to kill Americans — both military and civilian.”
Good catch.
Good catch, indeed!
WASHINGTON - The US Senate Friday doubled the bounty on Osama bin Laden to 50 million dollars, reflecting frustration that the Al Qaeda mastermind remains free and rising anxiety over possible future attacks.
The vote followed a flurry of reports that the group behind the September 11 strikes in 2001 had rebuilt its safe haven, leadership and capacity to plot terror operations, and was trying to sneak operatives into the United States.
The Senate voted by 87-1 to boost the price on Bin Ladens head under the State Department Rewards for Justice program, which has already paid out millions of dollars for top US targets, including Saddam Husseins sons.
It directs Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to authorize a reward of 50 million dollars for the capture or death or information leading to the capture or death of Osama bin Laden.
The bill also addresses frustration among some lawmakers that the Bush administration has still not caught bin Laden, despite launching a massive manhunt after the September 11 attacks, nearly six years go.
It requires the secretaries of state and defence and the director of national intelligence to produce a report to Congress every 90 days on progress towards bringing bin Laden and other terror leaders to justice.
North Dakota Senator Byron Dorgan, who wrote the amendment to a defence policy bill, said it has been six years, and Al Qaeda is now rebuilding its terrorist training camps, along with the Taleban, in a safe harbor.
It has been six years and they are reconstituting their ability to attack us, he said.
Dorgan warned Al Qaeda remains the greatest threat to the United States, even after these six long years; after two wars ... after trillions of dollars spent on those wars and for homeland security, after the deaths of thousands of our military, and after the wounding of tens of thousands of our military. Senators who spoke on the amendment mentioned a leaked draft of a new National Intelligence Estimate, which reportedly warned Al Qaeda had rebuilt a safe haven and leadership structure in Pakistani border areas.
As debate about a possible future attack by Al Qaeda on US territory mounted in Washington, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said this week that he had a gut feeling there was a heightened current risk of an attack.
President George W. Bush on Thursday denied reports that the intelligence assessment found Al Qaeda was back to its pre-September 11 strength.
There is a perception in the coverage that Al Qaeda may be as strong today as they were prior to September 11th. Thats simply not the case, Bush said.
White House deputy spokeswoman Dana Perino said Friday that the new national intelligence estimate was expected to be delivered to Bush within weeks.
The Washington Post reported Thursday that the group had rebuilt itself despite extensive US efforts to destroy the network.
The CIAs deputy director for intelligence, John Kringen, told a congressional committee on Wednesday that Al Qaeda appears to be fairly well-settled into the safe haven in the ungoverned spaces of Pakistan.
The Rewards for Justice Program has so far paid out 62 million dollars in bounties leading to top US terror suspects or for the prevention of terror attacks, the State Department says.
Among the top payouts were the 15 million dollars each for Saddams sons Uday and Qusay Hussein, killed by US troops in Iraq in 2003.
