US Steps Up Security Following Attack in Britain

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff made appearances on several television talk shows.

He told ABC's This Week program there is no indication of a linkage between the events in Britain and any specific attacks on the United States. "We do not have, at this point, specific, credible intelligence that there is an attack, a particular attack, focused on this country," he said.

But at the same time, speaking on CNN's Late Edition program, Chertoff said U.S. authorities are concerned about the threat of terrorism, especially in the coming months. "We have had a number of al-Qaida leaders quite publicly talking about how they want to carry out their threats against the West. So, given that and given the history that we have had over past summers, with attacks in Britain, I think we were clearly focused on this as a possibility," he said. Full story...

Cherthoff on ABC this morning was asked about the Brian Ross release of the plan for spectacular attacks this summer. NO SUSPICIOUS CREDIBLE INFO says the head of DHS. [I guess that depends on who you listen to]

Air marshalls added to flights to Glasgow prior to the attacks? He answers sometimes we add more to one airport or another not just Glasgow. [sort of didn’t answer that]

Did we know anything prior to attack? Best to let British release that. [didn’t say NO]

Traveling in US over holidays? Alert raised? Orange since last August. Taken some steps to increse transit area security. NO specific threats that we’re aware of. [same old answer [CYA]

Number of terrorists here? Constant monitoring of those who are suspected. And, collecting info about those coming here from Europe.

Mostly the same standard answer. If I may say, he doesn’t look well.

Follow-up:

The American Airlines terminal at JFK was briefly evacuated in the morning because of a suspicious package.

Sources at the scene said a carton of a perfume with the word “bomb” on the label was found in the baggage area, but the Port Authority would not comment on the claim.

With time more information comes out. I at first thought the Glasgow attack was more a sudden jihad instance. With the developments over the weekend, the Brits have a more solid connection with the two dud bombs. LGF has a photo showing the propane tanks included on the jeep - same MO as was found with the mercedes the day before. Clearly the cell involved here had the idea, but failed on the ignition method in both instances. Catching the perps in this instance will definitely give the brits some breathing room since I would suspect that any other cell would lay low until the intense scanning for other acts is stepped down. Below is a photo from LGF showing the propane tanks.

The photo I included with the first post also shows the tanks. I was pretty sure there must have been some in the vehicle while it was burning, as it appeared there was a “shooting” flame coming from about 3/4 back. I guess it’s harder to make them explode than I would have thought.

Ahhhh, yes there they are. Was screening the posts very quickly to catch and missed them. I suspect that the lack of an adequate explosive 'starter' is why all three failed.

According to the British General Medical Council’s register, a man named Bilal Talal Abdul Samad Abdulla was registered in 2004 and trained in Baghdad. Staff at Royal Alexandra Hospital said one suspect was a doctor of Middle Eastern or Iraqi origin who worked there.

A second man arrested late Saturday on a highway in central England is Mohammed Jamil Abdelqader Asha, according to a police official who was not authorized to publicly disclose the details and spoke on condition of anonymity. The medical register said Asha trained in Jordan, gaining a medical degree in 2004.

I heard a report that DHS informed the UK of Glasgow two weeks ago, and it was forwarded to the officials in Scotland.
