:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
US Steps Up Security Following Attack in Britain

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff made appearances on several television talk shows.

He told ABC's This Week program there is no indication of a linkage between the events in Britain and any specific attacks on the United States. "We do not have, at this point, specific, credible intelligence that there is an attack, a particular attack, focused on this country," he said.

But at the same time, speaking on CNN's Late Edition program, Chertoff said U.S. authorities are concerned about the threat of terrorism, especially in the coming months. "We have had a number of al-Qaida leaders quite publicly talking about how they want to carry out their threats against the West. So, given that and given the history that we have had over past summers, with attacks in Britain, I think we were clearly focused on this as a possibility," he said. Full story...

“Lots of “red” in the news”

Including Chertoff “red-faced” in the news, on a daily basis.

Thanks for the report, GoodOldDays.

I briefly saw a crawler on FOX news this morning.
The crawler said something like “FBI has just 2 weeks to find terrorists”.

Did anyone else see a report about this, this morning?

Goodolddays -please disregard my last question.
The report in Joe’s post #1046 explains the crawler that I saw this morning.

>>>Dozens of FBI agents have been given a two-week deadline to run down more than 700 leads on an FBI “worry list,” developed in the wake of the failed attacks in London and Glasgow.<<<

UPDATE:

‘Suspicious looking’ man hauled off translatlantic flight

‘Middle Eastern’ passenger provokes American Airlines divert

An American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to London this morning made an unscheduled stop at New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport after a member of the flight crew “alerted security on the ground that there may be a suspicious person on board, and the decision was made to divert the flight”, Flight International reports.

The man in question had “raised some eyebrows” aboard flight 136 by boarding the aircraft using an AA employee bus, thereby bypassing LAX security, even though he was on a private trip. A flight attendant who questioned him onboard was not satisfied he was an AA employee, and duly informed the pilot.

When the plane landed in NY at 4am, Transportation Security Administration operatives arrested the suspect, described as being of “Middle Eastern origin”. He was questioned while the aircraft was searched and passengers rescreened, without result.

US Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff later confirmed the man was an employee who was flying in a private capacity. He told CNN the incident may have been a “misunderstanding”, adding: “I think the good news here, of course, is an alert crew sees something that’s anomalous or seems questionable and they take action.”

Flight 136 was cancelled, and passengers reassigned to other London-bound aircraft.

From the 2004 TM archives . . .

Was thinking about Zawahiri’s wording “very precise” some more. A second interpretation in addition to the first (precision=GPS=drone/missile) would be assassination. The story below written by Bill Gertz, which was based on the same information that led to the orange alert for NYC-DC-NJ, ran within days of that orange alert during the summer of 2004 that had direct ties to what just happened in London (and other potential related and imminent threats).

An attack may have been disrupted and pushed back to Election Day 2004 (UBL’s last video address was days before the election and may have been a signal). Worth noting in that we should place much of the “dots” we see now back into the context of 2004 to make sense of them, and some of the “dots” we saw in 2004 should be brought forward to summer 2007 for them to make sense. So this red banner flashing “good news soon” as it did this time last year, might not mean “either-or” (either a new UBL message or a new attack), but “both-and”.

Also remarkable that this was exact time when the Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades (in a statement purportedly signed by Saif Adel), the nom de guerre used by the front group that claimed responsibility for Istanbul 2003, Madrid 2004, and London 2005, threatened to set fire to “the land of the Romans”. This threat was issued upon the expiration of their April 2004 90-day truce offered to Europe, which was seen as a threat against the “Romans” of Italy, but in light of all the recent “Romanesque” threats, should be “brought forward” to the present and applied in a wider sense to all of the West, and the US/UK in particular.

Reinforcing this “Roman” threat was a UBL audio tape released earlier that year where he both indirectly, then directly called America “the new Rome”.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/3368957.stm

Full text: ‘Bin Laden’ tape
The is a translated transcript of an audiotape said to be of Osama Bin Laden, aired by al-Jazeera satellite channel on 4 January, 2004:

(excerpted)

” . . . Jihad is the path, so seek it. This is because if we seek to deter them with any means other than Islam, we would be like the one who goes round in circles. We would also be like our forefathers, the al-Ghasasinah [Arab people who lived in a state historically located in the north-west of the Persian empire]. The concern of their seniors was to be appointed officers for the Romans and to be named kings in order to safeguard the interests of the Romans by killing their brothers of the peninsula’s Arabs. Such is the case of the new al-Ghasasinah; namely, Arab rulers.

. . . They should start by directing the Muslims to the important priorities at this critical stage and lead them to a safe haven, provided that their top priority should be uniting opinions under the word of monotheism and defending Islam and its people and countries and declaring a general mobilisation in the nation to prepare for repulsing the raids of the Romans, which started in Iraq and no-one knows where they will end.”

The threats against “Rome” in 2004 and the threats against “Rome” in 2007 are one and the same.

U.S. Officials: Al Qaeda Plans Major Assassination; Bin Laden Will Signal Attack

August 11, 2004
By Bill Gertz
THE WASHINGTON TIMES (excerpted)

U.S. intelligence officials say a high-profile political assassination, triggered by the public release of a new message from Osama bin Laden, will lead off the next major al Qaeda terrorist attack, The Washington Times has learned.

The assassination plan is among new details of al Qaeda plots disclosed by U.S. officials familiar with intelligence reports who, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the killing could be carried out against a U.S. or foreign leader either in the United States or abroad. . .

The new details of al Qaeda’s plans were found on a laptop computer belonging to arrested al Qaeda operative Muhammad Naeem Noor Khan of Pakistan. “We’re talking about planning at the screwdriver level,” one official said. “It is very detailed.” Regarding the new bin Laden message, the officials said there are intelligence reports, some of them sketchy, that a new tape from the al Qaeda leader will surface soon. In the past, video and audio messages by bin Laden or his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, were broadcast days or weeks before an attack, the officials said. “The message likely will be the signal for the attack to be launched,” one official said.

Bin Laden last released a taped message in April. The CIA said that the audiotape probably was the voice of bin Laden and that the mention of the March 11 Madrid train bombings shows that the tape was current. That tape offered a “truce” for any European state that pledged to stop attacking Muslims and end cooperation with the United States. . .

On Aug. 2, the Bush administration raised the terrorism threat level from “elevated” to “high” for five finance-related sites in the District, New York and New Jersey, based on the intelligence in Khan’s computer, as well as other intelligence. . .

Definitely, I agree.

Musharraf's plane was recently targeted. This, IMO was a red light at another high profile assassination attempt that ties in with the rest of your analysis.

And in the last couple of months we were told that muslim hospital employees/health care workers refused to use the antibacterial hand sanitizer due to the alcohol. Britain must have a lot of muslims in the health care industry.

UPDATE:

Problem fixed and not suspicious:

SNIP:
City officials said the source of the gasoline leak had been identified at Hocker Oil’s Gas Plus filling station. One block of Main Street was reopened to traffic about 1:30 p.m. Sigman hopes to have more of the street open to traffic by evening.

Emergency workers and city officials determined late last night that the explosive gas found in portions of the city sewer system yesterday was coming from a large gas leak at Gas Plus, located at the corner of Main and Ferguson streets.

Well, this is weird. Yet another update and this one contradicts Chertoff.

Officials say passenger on diverted flight had a regular boarding pass

NEW YORK (AP) - Federal officials say the passenger who was questioned after fears of a security breach forced a plane to land at New York’s JFK airport turned out to be a regular passenger with a valid boarding pass.

Christopher White of the Transportation Security Administration says there is no indication that the man had used employee transportation and bypassed security, as had been suspected by a flight attendant on the American Airlines plane.

The flight was canceled after it landed in New York and passengers were transferred to other flights.

A spokesman for American Airlines says the airline is interviewing the flight attendant to determine how she came to suspect that the man had skirted security or posed as an employee.

On the fake tooth paste issue that has been in the news. The tooth paste contains toxic Chemicals. I found this rather interesting:

“Despite having “no evidence” of the contaminated product entering the legitimate supply chain, the watchdog is asking hospitals, wholesalers and pharmacies to check for Sensodyne in combined Arabic and English packaging.”

I guess we know where the fake toothpaste came from.

UPDATE (again):

TSA: Fears about passenger taken off plane unfounded
July 12, 2007

The Transportation Security Administration said that a passenger taken off an international flight in an emergency stop on Thursday, because of a crew member's suspicions, had done nothing wrong and had posed no security threat.

The American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to London was diverted to New York early Thursday after a crew member became suspicious of the passenger, an airline spokeswoman said. The crew member questioned the man, whom she believed she had seen bypassing security by riding on an employee-only shuttle bus from the parking lot to the LAX airport employee entrance, according to spokeswoman Sonja Whitemon.

"The passenger became cause for concern," American Airlines spokesman Ned Raynolds told CNN. "The pilot and crew made a decision to divert to JFK." The plane, carrying 218 passengers and 14 crew members, landed at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport at about 2:45 a.m. ET.

Anthony Loynes, one of the 188 passengers aboard the flight, told CNN the pilot told passengers the plane was stopping at JFK because the plane did not have enough fuel to make it to London.

Shortly after landing, Loynes said, security officials boarded the plane and left with a man of "Middle Eastern descent." A woman sitting next to the man was also questioned, he added. Everyone was subsequently taken off the plane and the cabin was scheduled to undergo a security sweep, the airlines spokeswoman said.

The passenger was detained and was interviewed by FBI agents Thursday morning, FBI officials in New York and Washington told CNN. The TSA later found the passenger had gone through proper security procedures. FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller in Los Angeles said the man is a U.S. citizen, born in the United States.

According to Russ Knocke, with the Department of Homeland Security, American Airlines security officials identified the man as an executive platinum traveler with the airline who purchased his round-trip ticket on April 19. The plane left Los Angeles at about 6 p.m. (9 p.m. ET) Wednesday night, and had been scheduled to arrive in London at 12:25 p.m. (7:25 a.m. ET). Most or all of the passengers were put on another American Airlines flight, which was scheduled to arrive at Heathrow at 8:25 p.m. Thursday (3:25 p.m. ET)

“21-month sentence for Salah
Businessman guilty of lying in Hamas case”

By Michael Higgins
Tribune staff reporter
Published July 12, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “In a case that riveted Chicago’s Muslim community, a Bridgeview businessman accused of aiding terrorists was sentenced Wednesday to 21 months in prison for lying in a civil lawsuit.

Muhammad Salah, 54, spoke out afterward against the sentence as he tried to comfort his 6-year-old daughter, Sumayya, who had burst into tears when the prison term was announced.

“It’s unfair,” Salah said in a courtroom hallway. “It’s just politics. ... You can’t destroy a family just to please a bunch of zealots.”

Salah, a U.S. citizen, had won a key victory in February when a federal jury acquitted him of conspiring to support Hamas extremists and found him guilty on a less serious charge of obstruction of justice.

But federal prosecutors argued that Salah’s lies — about his role in Hamas and, later, they said, about alleged torture by Israeli agents — deserved a 10-year prison term.”

UPDATE:

http://chicago.fbi.gov/pressrel/2007/jun12_07.htm

June 12, 2007

REWARD OFFER INCREASED IN SEARCH FOR GANG LEADER

PRESS RELEASE SNIPPET: “Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced today that a reward of up to $20,000 is now being offered for information leading to the arrest of DONNELL JEHAN, age 39, whose last known address was 6522 South Ashland Avenue in Chicago. A reward of up to $10,000 was previously offered for information leading to his arrest.

JEHAN has been the subject of a nationwide manhunt, coordinated by the Chicago FBI, since May of 2004 after being charged in a criminal complaint, along with 46 other members and associates of the Black Disciples street gang, with multiple violations of federal drug laws. JEHAN is the lone defendant of this investigation, code named operation “Marvel Less”, to remain in a fugitive status.

Two other defendants in this case, LESEAN FORD and FINNIE HAWKINS, also evaded capture in May of 2004, but have recently been apprehended following tips received from the public.

JEHAN is described as a black/male, 39 years of age, 6’3” tall, 250 pounds, black hair, brown eyes, with a slight beard and mustache. JEHAN is known to use the alias of Darnel Clark and also goes by the street name of “Scandalous” and “Scan”. JEHAN was last known to be driving a Cadillac Escalade with Illinois license J325569. In addition to his apartment on South Ashland Avenue, JEHAN is known to frequent Chicago’s southeast side and the south suburbs in and around South Holland.

JEHAN has been profiled on several national television shows, including “America’s Most Wanted”; Fox News Channel’s “The Line-up” and locally on “Chicago’s Most Wanted”.

JEHAN should be considered Armed and Dangerous. He is alleged to be a high ranking member in one of Chicago’s largest and most violent street gangs and has an extensive criminal record for crimes of violence. Anyone with information about JEHAN’s current whereabouts is asked to call the Chicago FBI at (312) 421-6700.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”
