He may very well become an excellent candidate if he runs but his percentage means nothing until he declares his candidacy.

It’s front page in the July issue.
Must be a quarterly thing.... But glad to see FT doing well without being an official candidate:

The release from the CRA web site:

Fred Thompson is the Favorite in Republican Straw Poll

California Republican Assembly conducts vote during annual convention

Former Senator Fred Thompson took first place in a Presidential Preference straw poll conducted by the California Republican Assembly at its annual convention this weekend.

Thompson received 25% percent of the convention delegates’ votes, easily beating the two runners up, Congressman Duncan Hunter and Governor Mitt Romney who each received 19% of the vote.

Complete straw poll results follow:

Fred Thompson (25%)
Duncan Hunter (19%)
Mitt Romney (19%)
Ron Paul (12%)
Tom Tancredo (8%)
Newt Gingrich (7%)
Rudy Guiliani (7%)
Sam Brownbeck (3%)
Mike Huckabee (0%)
Tommy Thompson (0%)

CRA, the state’s oldest and largest Republican volunteer organization, conducted the straw poll as part of a weekend convention that featured appearances by Presidential candidates Duncan Hunter and Congressman Ron Paul.

Other speakers included Senator Tom McClintock, Congressmen Gary Miller and Ed Royce, Assemblymen Bob Huff, Bill Emmerson and Chuck DeVore, and Joe Loya, father-in-law of Border Agent Ignacio “Nacho” Ramos.

In convention business, the CRA delegates re-elected Mike Spence to serve as President for two more years, as well as electing a new board of directors.

The results also don’t add up to 100%. There’s been an omission, whether it’s for Guliani or McCain or for an ‘undecided’ category.

Hunter ping!

Just bumping an old interview with Hunter.

That’s also a strong showing by Congressman Hunter.

Finally some strong numbers for Hunter!
I would expect to see Hunter, Tancredo, and FRed all at the upper end of ‘Conservative’ polls.

I’d have to agree!!
I also think that Hunter as Sec.Def. would be good and Tanc chief at DHS would curl the toes of the uber-libs too!
And lets throw in Sgt R.Lee Emery (Mail Call) as Press Secretary!!!!

Turning out to be a GREAT weekend for Hunter!

No need to fear those 1%-ers, eh?

Another interesting observation: the only reason Duncan Hunter didn’t win this is that Tom Tancredo and Hunter are splitting the conservative vote.

Obviously the CRA didn’t get the memo that Rudy Girliani is the annoyted one.

Seeing as how Fred has not announced yet, I’m surprised he was on the ballot.

I’m pleased with the results though.

Fred BUMP!

Indeed. This appears to be a very poor return on his money and effort in Kalifornia.

The poll your link goes to is not dated.

The poll referenced in reply #16 says Rootie got eight votes. The poll referenced in the main post does not mention Rootie.

Pardon my skepticism.
