CNN’s ace reporter Ed Henry, in Kennebunkport Maine, reporting President Bush took a bike ride today, saying he’s not sure the President has been briefed yet on Glasglow.
Our American ethnocentric whiners and Political Correctness Police have made it impossible in many critical areas to distinguish between South Asians (India, Pakistan), East Asians (Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou Province), and SE Asians (Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand).
God forbid that we should use "Oriental" to identify SE Asians and East Asians! That's "racist"!.So instead the enthnocentric racists have narrowed our human descriptive powers down to a vast, unknowable, diverse, and multicultural mob to be known mainly and most safely as "Asians".
And so when one is researching a trivial little topic such as ...oh, say, the CDC's disease contagion figures .... the resulting dataset will be sliced into an "Asian" block that stretches from Kandahar, Afghanistan (yep, "Asians"), eastward to India and Nepal, and then swoopng grossly southeast to Malaysia and simultaneously northeast through Burma, most of China and Taiwan, and not to forget Japan and the Koreas.
Thus (in this example) our multicultural diversificationists abet in the creation of a totally useless dataset that includes more than half the world's population. Useful, huh?
And if you don't believe that, go look at the recent CDC data on TB infection rates in the U.S. Just how useful is it to know that "Asians" in America show a 23 percent latent infection rate (that's pretty darned high), despite ongoing TB reductions in SE Asia?
Is that TB coming from India or Laos or Hong Kong? We don't know. CDC doesn't mnake those kinds of value judgments about words and definitions. That's for others to decide.
And what kind of racist and divisive question is that anyway!? It's from "Asians", and that's all you need to know.
