The Presidents Statement - (barf alert)
FNS ^

Posted on 06/28/2007 10:31:23 AM PDT by Scythian

PRESIDENT BUSH: I thank the members of the Senate and members of my administration who worked so hard on the border security and immigration reform bill. I'm sorry the Senate was unable to reach agreement on the bill this morning.

Legal immigration is one of the top concerns of the American people, and Congress's failure to act on it is a disappointment. The American people understand the status quo is unacceptable when it comes to our immigration laws. A lot of us worked hard to see if we couldn't find common ground. It -- it didn't work. ...

I wish the president was as dogged in an attempt to reform Social Security as he was/is in this monstrosity. Sheesh.

To borrow a British phrase, the only thing Jorge Boosh can do now is spit his dummy out and throw his toys out of the pram.

Mr. President,

We the people are sorry that your reform plan was not passed. Tony Snow (eventually) did a good job of showing that it had many good aspects to it, but it was poorly presented. Maybe you can try one more next year.

In the meantime, you could show us that you TRULY care about this issue by making sure that the Executive branch, at all levels, enforces those laws currently on the books.

Thank for your time!

Sincerely,
The lawful citzens of these United States

Not only that, but also severely punish employing infractors. I’m talking jail time here, mandatory jail time.

It . . . it didn't work

No it . . . it didn't. I heard George looked shaken when he heard the bill failed. Good. His "yes" men probably didn't prepare him well. I'm glad he is as poor at building his new world order as he has been at everything else in his Presidency. Hopefully this was the last gasp of a lame duck. Of course, the baby of a rational policy in the war on terror may have gone out with the bathwater of George Bush's break with his base.

The complete statement, from the WH website:

THE PRESIDENT: I thank the members of the Senate and members of my administration who worked so hard on the border security and immigration reform bill. I’m sorry the Senate was unable to reach agreement on the bill this morning.

Legal immigration is one of the top concerns of the American people and Congress’s failure to act on it is a disappointment. The American people understand the status quo is unacceptable when it comes to our immigration laws. A lot of us worked hard to see if we couldn’t find a common ground — it didn’t work.

Congress really needs to prove to the American people that it can come together on hard issues. The Congress needs to work on comprehensive energy policy and good health care; make sure health care is affordable without inviting the federal government to run the health care system. We’ve got to work together to make sure we can balance this federal budget, and not overspend or raise taxes on the American people. We’ve got a lot of work to do.

When they come back from the summer — from the July recess, before the summer break begins, we’ll be focusing on the appropriations process. And I look forward to working with Congress to balance our budgets and to be wise about how we spend the people’s money.

Thank you for your time.

Our POTUS is a man of class. A man who takes on big issues and who doesn't flip-flop because of polls. He is a leader (and that typically doesn't earn one a lot of popularity all the time).

I disagreed with the WH on this issue and I'm glad to see this bill was defeated within the process of our Gov't.

Many of you here saying all sorts of disrespectful (DEM attack type comments) have simply shown we have a segment of our base that is of the same ilk as the DEM left (your politics are just better 90% of the time).

El Presidente: A lot of us worked hard to see if we couldn't find common ground. It -- it didn't work. ...

I wonder why?

It seems like your man, Lindsey Graham, going to La Raza and declaring that he was going to tell "the bigots" (i.e., us) to "jes' shewtUP," would have calmed us down so that we could all reason together.

Of course, there was the little problem of the "cram down" stragegy, by which the deal was supposed to be done before anyone could even read it and no significant amendments allowed.

You are a real smooth leader, Jorge. I just can't understand why the bigots would not follow you.

Twelve million unregistered aliens, foreigners, is not to be fixed by calling it something else.

To Bush they're just "newcomers" that we're supposed to accept unconditionally and not as the invading lawbreakers that they really are. I don't think today's events will change his opinion on that so we will be stuck with his version of the status quo for the next 18 months.

What you were trying to force down our throats was status quo plus 30,000,000.,

that's the scariest part. Based on the Heritage Foundation report, the likely number would have easily been over 50 Million. Our Republic was a few votes away from being destroyed. CLOSE THE BORDER-- NOW !!
