We're not allowed to post any content from PC Magazine here, but Dvorak's column on the iPhone may strike a chord with some here ;-}
Shut Up About the iPhone, Already!
LOL! Thanks just a reminder of how old I am. I still use the occasional stamp for services that dont accept online payment. There are still a few! now they are old and behind the times! ;-)
I guess I’m just not with it, because this is the first I’ve heard about the iPhone.
Anyway, if anyone cares, you can get a 20 minute guided tour from Apple right here:

Does anyone want to watch a 20 minute video about iPhone? I think I’ll pass it up, myself.
"MacDailyNews Take: Not that we needed it (John dumped his last ounce of credibility down the drain years ago), but now we have definitive proof that Dvorak is the world's largest Hawaiian shirt-wearing weasel. This is Dvorak's "Paris Hilton moment." Mercifully, he remains fully clothed throughout. This is a video which we can and will use as reference for Dvorak's shams ad infinitum. Good move, John. You're such a genius! Planning to retire soon?"
I got a $30 1 GB player for songs. Can you see driving down the road and touching the screen? My V3C phone has voice commands and a bluetooth headset. And it was free.
Value, what value ... has the world lost their minds? Or do people just have too much money.
$500 for a phone? $100 a month payment?
LOL!
Yep, my 8 MBits is barely crawling along — Compared to the 64 KBits per channel of typical cell phone it is really slow. Comcast is hoping to get the 8 MBits up to a more repsectable 25 MBits in the future ... LOL.
I don’t think most know how restrictive the cell frequencies are when it comes to Internet use.
I can’t afford one but I can’t wait to see how they work out for the first users.
The ipod was brilliantly marketed. People are fadish about portable music players, and probably have been since the "transistor" radio. I don't know if folks are going to get worked up about a cell phone, but if anyone can do it, Apple can.
Yeah, I know. Every time we upgrade, we end up with a free phone. I feel like we got a closet full of the silly things. Mr. Peel likes his toys. The HP phone was a real disappointment to him as he wanted all of those features. Our current phones are pretty beat up (Razr). He was thinking of getting a Blackberry when Jobs made the announcement. Been waiting with anticipation ever since.
I've used internet over the cell phone in travel. Its a blast. Great for sending e-mail, getting directions - updates -- keeping in touch. Its wild to have an Internet Message session going on while a passenger in the car. Associates don't know you're on travel. Speed generally wasn't an issue. Being connected was the main thing.
Sorry I am a bit off topic but this is an opportunity to get feedback from you all about a cell phone. I have resisted getting one but this summer I will.
I need to be able to easily call from abroad as well as here, and to send and receive get my email with it.
Suggestions?
Out of my price range too, but the bigger drawback is I can’t use it with my carrier which is a requirement for ‘free’ phone calls with my daughter’s phone. ATT isn’t even available where she lives.
You and me too, honey!
Does anyone know if you can play music over the car stereo with it like you can with an Ipod? It would be very convenient if you could.
Also - I am getting one as a gift - can you forgo the $40 extra charge for the internet if you are in a WiFi place?
Thanks. I already pay close to $100 a month for my regular cell and do NOT want to pay much more!
Maybe someone else can help you. I have limited knowledge about what companies offer what services.
Paris Hilton has one. You wanna be outa the loop man?
I use a Cingular 3G card in my notebook.....
Speed tests around 1.8M download.....
Fast enough for Internet...streaming video etc.
The complaint regarding the iPhone is the internet access is on the Cingular Edge network, I have a HTC 8125 with Microsoft OS and it runs at about 512K download on Cingular’s Edge.
Not really good enough for streaming....
I guess Cingular and Apple are guessing the WiFi option on the iPhone will pick up the slack with consumers...
I believe that is a major error.
Check out Apple's web site for the other info
"There is no evidence that people want to use these things."Dvorak is the most blatant professional troll in computer journalism. He would have no career if not for pretending to be the complete idiot that he appears.- Dvorak 1984, on Apple's inclusion of a mouse with their computers.
(Don't tell me he is genuinely that stupid.... is he?)
The man has clear mental problems. Nothing he writes should ever be taken seriously.
